Flowering Bougainvillea Bonsai - July 2024
The bougainvillea have wonderful three pretty bright bracts, most often magenta or purple colored. These bracts surround the actual flower. The bracts have a very thin, paper-like consistency, hence their common name, the paper flower.

A Cypress Bonsai (A Present for a 40th Birthday)
Переглядів 1872 місяці тому
This cypress bonsai, a Sicilian yamadori, was given as a gift to Emilio Bilocca on his 40th Birthday by Ignazio Giambrone (founder of Michelangelo Bonsai). The beauty of such cypress yamadori is that they are not sterotyped and in this sense unqiue. In this session Emilio sets the branches, by wiring and guy wires, into the desrired positions vis-à-vis the chosen front. He also removes excess g...

My Chinese Elm Raft Bonsai (June 2024)
Переглядів 1042 місяці тому
The raft was started years ago (in 2006) from a rooted cutting that was then grown in the ground to fatten the trunks. I also made the pot, bisque baked it and then glazed it with the help of ceramist Rosella Schembri at 'Space For Clay'. I exhibited this raft at our BCG-Malta's 31st Annual Bonsai Exhibition 2024. This year a very dear friend of mine made me an unclassical table, which was in m...
Olea europaea (Olive) Bonsai with Fruit
Переглядів 1252 місяці тому
This Olive bonsai was grown from a large cutting using the clear plastic bag method to make it root. The deadwood was created by Kevin Willson when he came as a guest at BCG-Malta's Annual Bonsai Exhibition in 2012. Kevin Willson, master in driftwood techniques from the UK, was invited over to Malta during BCG-Malta's celebrations of its official opening of its clubhouse in 'Notre Dame' street,...
Rhamnus oleoides (Olive-leaved Buckthorn) Bonsai -Twin Trunk...(Żiju in Maltese)
Переглядів 1352 місяці тому
My friend Paul Micallef honoured me with this tree. He grew this tree many years ago from a small cutting. It is indeed, a privilege and honour to inherit such a bonsai. I truly agree with the Japanese, that honour always goes to the creator of the bonsai. In the coming years under my care I will always be its caretaker, which still has some merit in it for keeping the tree alive and healthy. M...

The Making of a Chinese Elm Raft Bonsai
Переглядів 4186 місяців тому
The raft bonsai style emulates the style of a tree in nature that has toppled to the ground but still survives. This raft is an ikadabuki (straight-line) type. This Chinese Elm raft bonsai started from a small cutting. It was fattened by growing it in the ground. The pot that is a self-made one (see ua-cam.com/video/4MoF2N5qgAs/v-deo.html ).
My Surinam Cherry Bonsai (Eugenia uniflora)
Переглядів 1716 місяців тому
This Surinam cherry bonsai was grown from a seed. Its botanical name is Eugenia uniflora. As a species I think that it should be grown more as bonsai as once established it is highly drought tolerant, cold tolerant, and disease resistant. The new leaves are bronze, copper, or coppery-pinkish in color, maturing to deep glossy green. During winter, the leaves turn red. The flowers develop into ri...

Erica multiflora pre-bonsai in flower (Mediterranean Heath)
Переглядів 1287 місяців тому
Why grow E. multiflora for bonsai? 1. Indeginous and so it is well adapted to our climate. 2. Is a beautiful evergreen (with compact pads and small needle-like leaves). 3. Deadwood can be a focal point. 4. Beautiful when in flower. 5. Back buds (easily and abundantly). 6. Responds to targeted bonsai techniques (wiring, pruning). 7. Styles and sizes Mame , shohin and possibly kifu size (as speci...
Journey to Hawthorn Bonsai from Seeds
Переглядів 1258 місяців тому
My long journey of Hawthorn bonsai from seeds, continues. 1, 2 and 3 year old Hawthorns waking up...some showing new white roots while others putting out new leaves. Time for some repotting. Also one has been wired and set to be trained into a weeping hawthorn. (January 2024). Growing from seeds is always a humble beginning. And one needs to be humble and understand this. In doing so, you will ...

The scarification does need to be a bit rough but sandpaper is too much. A bounded tray with window screen wiring and gentle scrubbing against it allows for a perfect scarification method that proved vital in caring for the seeds as well as not scaring them too much.

Right at 1:19. Separating the sprigs to their own pots. Her method is a no no or a method that allows for more mortality rates. NEVER expose the root. This is with most plants. Especially at this stage of age. She should cut the soil tray in three and supplant the sprigs WITH the soil it is in as to not bother the roots. A big no no. 16 years farming from nurseries to a diversity of plants, delicate or rugged.

ua-cam.com/video/I3SAk-s-HRQ/v-deo.html follow link to see Iganzio Giambrone making deadwood come alive. Making old natural looking deadwood. Indeed, from a relatively flat simple deadwood, Ignazio, creates a more dynamic looking deadwood that intrigues the mind with its cavities, perforations, fissures, crevices, 'woodworming' effects, 'chiaroscuro', undulations, vertical and horizontal dis-leveling, spaces, fractals...all conducive to a better three-dimensionality and dynamism.

I usually re-pot before its awakening, here in Malta normally around late February early March. I said normally because I also did total defoliation and re-potted them in June. They are so hardy.
