'ALL THINGS BRIGHT BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL, ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL'.
Thus was the first book he wrote after getting sober after a decade or more of amphetamine addiction
Kotkin doesn't actually believe the common view that Lenin didn't want Stalin to proceed him, Kotkin points out that it's actually quite the opposite and Lenin was grooming Stalin for power and saw him as his protégé. The famous note from Lenin in which he allegedly denounced Stalin is not necessarily authentic, and Kotkin posits may have been forged by Lenin's wife, since nobody could actually confirm Lenin dictated or wrote it since he was crippled at that time.
Best review I’ve seen so far. This book touched my soul. Thank you and thank you Mikhail Bulgakov
Thanks so much for your review. I liked the book as well. The outline at the end is obstructed by a link to a video about Caravaggio. Is there a way to remove it in order for us to see the full outline(s)? Thanks again.
@@Crash0208 thanks for the comment! I’ve just removed the link so that should work now. Cheers
@@vincenotes4765 thank you so much; that was kind of you. I took some screenshots, so if it helps you to have it up I’m finished. :)
I think this is one of his worst. Very disappointing because the premise is great, but the execution is just terrible. Horribly paced, dull dialogues, a lot of telling instead of showing, no characterization, lots of pointless repetition... I think "Vulcan's Hammer" is way better written
Will check Vulcan’s Hammer out - cheers
Wonderful review and analysis. Thank you.
Thank you!
Just came her after the movie, great review of the book
Same here. The film has Gordon and Mrs. Forde steering the couple towards Jack. Mrs.Forde’s seance is very much like the Ann Dowd character in “Hereditary”. Pretending to say goodbye to the dead child, while secretly saying hello to something new and evil.
Autobiographical in the sense f.scott lived in Paris in the 1920's, he drank too much, which caused his heart attack and death, and also his own wife suffered from mental illness.
Unfortunately this seems to be completely unavailable to buy or stream. I'd check it out if I could.
I bought it on dvd a couple of years ago on eBay I think?
i don’t think that mike is the same person as bob/fred/bruce. whilst mike acts (in new path) as if he’s experienced some cognitive damage it becomes clear that this is an act during his conversation with donna where it is revealed that he is undercover. if mike and bruce were the same person they wouldn’t have had the freedom to leave new path. interested to know your thought process behind labelling them as one in the same?
Yeah, I also thought Mike was a different character than Bob/Fred/Bruce. When Vince said he was also Bob, that took me by surprise.
Yes - I could’ve got mixed up! Thank you for the correction
This sounded right up my alley but I was concerned when I saw a few recommendations mention an abrupt ending. Glad I didn't waste my time or money on buying it via Audible now. While the story itself sounds great, and I like some things being left to the imagination, this ending would annoy me. So glad I looked up your video 👍
I appreciate the book's detail as far as an academic historical text goes, and I enjoy listening to interviews with the author. But reading this book is nothing like listening to him speak. The book is full of dull micro details; page after page of endless miscellaneous figures, notes, statistics, messages back and forth between party operatives etc... but all this is presented without any attempt to guide the reader by providing explanatory summaries or clarifying passages. For the general public interested in this topic, this 900+ page book is far too long winded.
Thank you for commenting. I too like his interviews, as his considerable wit shines forth. I disagree re the books - I find them fascinating. All the best!
Just finshed the book
A very nice review. It feels as if you really loved the book.
Bro this video is gonna save me from failing my exam tommorow
Thank you Vince
What is other great written gothic fiction you would recommend?
Good video. Just a small correction. The bust of Augustus was actually found in Sudan and was a taken from Egypt. It was taken by an Ancient Kushite (or Nubian) Queen called Amainerinas. The Kingdom had a war with Rome which ended up in a peace treaty. This statue was placed under a temple as symbol of walking over Augustus. They don't mention this in the exhibition in detail but it's mentioned more in the Sudanese section of the museum. Her victory steale mentions the war. It is only partially understood as their ancient script is fully understood.
Thank you for this information
Amazingly interesting film about choices, hedonism, misogyny and self centeredness... not sure what emotions I'm left with and how i should feel about things... much like Alfie himself i suppose. He's a lot like a lot of boys you'd meet, who refuse to grow up or evolve their perceptions. I have to say i do slightly disagree with the idea of Alfie being at all likeable. I think he's quite sexy and confident, but i do think he is intentionally supposed to be quite disgusting and loathsome. Despite these qualities tho, we are still interestingly able to sympathies with him as he slowly introspects on his actions and misery... Fantastically crafted film... thank you for ur insights and analysis.
Lovely review. Was nice to listen to after reading it. Ending of the book i found so abrupt. I thought my audio book glitched!
Such a fantastic review. Thank you so much!
Thank you for that very interesting video ! I've read that monument of a novel a few years back but there were a lot of things I didn't grasp or understand. This was a clear and very accessible explanation.
Cheers Vince you have explained this masterpiece incredibly well and made me realise I understood it better than I thought I did .
Thank you! Great informative video :)
A fine series, just read the one on Japanese literature and about to read God soon.
Love it
Yes man
Very interesting, thank you!
For a breakthrough understanding of the Book of Job, read the novel “Where Do We Go Now, LORD - Burke.” Enjoy the breakthroughs!
can you make a video of your top novels please i think you have a great taste
Possibly! Thanks!
i love you thank you
you saved me before my film exam, thank you sir.
This book felt so very raw and it was nice to read something so real, not so many magical things to shroud the actually telling of the story.
Unfortunately, this book is not as good as his masterpiece, The Great Gatsby. You can see a total shift in his style as well, with over abundance of adjectives. Alcoholism really hurt him, literarily!
Another theme that struck me was the line between being a “civilized human” vs an animal - whether the camp destroys your human dignity or you maintain it in the face or utter degradation, pain, & suffering. For example, how people eat in the mess hall. Shukov eats with dignity & manners, taking his cap off, savoring his food, eating every last scrap but not to the point of licking his bowl and being grateful, in contrast to people who shove it down quickly, like an animal, licking even other people’s leftover bowls, and do not remove their caps. Another example is when at work, Shukov takes a lot of pride in his detailed, skilled, high quality labor. It’s almost an art or a labor of love, which animals are incapable of or only can see it as a means to an end (food/reward) and try to get out of it if possible. Fetyukov is the obvious foil to shukov since Fetyukov discarded his dignity to survive - scavenging & sneaking in multiple ways. But then he’s ultimately punished for it (beaten up for licking bowls) and Shukov predicts he won’t survive.
Thank you - that’s an excellent point!
thank you!
My favorite book of Dostoevsky
I think the chapter describing Nastasya's humiliation of General Ivolgin in Part 1 is one of the greatest passages of prose I've ever read.
@@vincenotes4765 I don't remember that part much as I haven't read the book in a few years.
@@vincenotes4765 Why exactly did she humiliate him? What was the motivation?
General Ivolgin makes up an elaborate story to impress her, but she knows that he's copied a story in the newspapers almost verbatim and she delights in telling everyone about it - how he is basically delusional @@donaldquirk7801
thanks so much! very interesting
Really informative, and you speak eloquently
Thank you
My 14-year study of the history of "A Christmas Carol," as an independent researcher, suggests that it was originally written by an American couple named Mathew and Abby Whittier.
Thank you for that insight.
There are two black and white films based on this book, Village of the Damned and Children of the Damned and they are in a twin dvd boxset.
Thanks will check these out
if ivan kept his mouth shut he would of had a easy life! it proofs he was a bit Dum!
Can't say I agree with you
Thanks for your briefing. I’ve got Scruton’s book but haven’t quite finished it yet after acquiring it for some years.
Good vid! I was astounded by the amount of research that Duffy did, as well.
The points you made to be aware of, the language, rape, etc are mainly to illustrate what a nasty piece of work Flashman is so I’d say it’s still acceptable and the book is relevant as historical fiction.
I think the "rhetorizer" is more like chatGBT than Alexa, but I liked your summary and analysis. Now read "Ubik" by PKD, it has some similar themes but I felt it held together a little better than Penultimate Truth
Just finished the book. I thought the same thing! But it's a weird machine anyway (creating a speech based on just one word or random sentence).
Sir i watched your rewiew your content is awsome keep it up !
Thank you!!!
cheers vince well good this video
I've read this at least three times now, as well as seeing a UA-cam video, in not very good English, though it does help. I was surprised at one of the characters saying that Jerusalem was especially busy, because it was Easter.
A favourite quote, only in the book, was where Woland tells The Master and Margarita that they might like to walk among the cherry trees in the daytime, and listen To Schubert in the evening.
I’ll have to look that quote up & make a note of it. Cheers
