Powerwerx MEGAbox mod for night vision astrophotography

A walkthrough of how I modded the Powerwerx MEGAbox for use with a white/red light instead of the amber/white light that comes by default. lol. My children aren't the best actors and had 100 things they would rather do than sit for a dad project. I had them sit against a wall to record and then I ran the video through Adobe After Effects to stabilize the footage on the nose of each person. I can do a follow-up on how I filmed if interested.

    Thanks for this. Question for you, I bought this but the posts on the deep cycle 12V were too big for the Anderson cable ends (both types of posts on 12v too big). We stripped those off and wrapped the wires around the bolt posts. The question is how does the Yeti work with the chained battery? Does the reading on battery state on the Yeti factor both batteries or does the Yeti run out first than the chained battery is charged? Basically how does the Yeti work with the chained battery. Thanks again!

    • @JeffreySerpas
      @JeffreySerpas 10 місяців тому

      I believe it just hardwires the 2 batteries together in parallel (the one in the yeti and the one outside) The reading on the yeti would be for the total voltage of both batteries chained together

    The Yeti will charge the chained battery. Look for instructions. I think that you need to charge the Yeti all the way first and then press a button for thirty second until it resets after chaining it first. Now you will see the capacity of the Yeti plus the chained battery and the Yeti will charge both. Thanks.

    So how is the red light working in the field? Is it too bright, is it a dark enough shade of red, is it preserving your night vision or ??? Also, why did you change the mode selector to work off the hot lead of the battery and not the ground lead like it was originally wired on the old light, was this a requirement of the new light? Thanks!

    • @JeffreySerpas
      @JeffreySerpas 4 роки тому

      the color is good, but it is bright. I probably wouldn't turn it on if I were out with other people because it is so bright and just use a headlamp, but it doesn't bother me. I usually bounce it to the side or back (not directly at the scope) to diffuse the light because it is so bright. And yes, the wiring change was due to the wiring diagram of the new light.

    I bought everything you listed and chained the batters (too easy) but I don't know about "charging" the batteries. I wonder if while I'm charging my Yeti 400, the external battery charges also. Help! This is NOT my expert field.

    • @JeffreySerpas
      @JeffreySerpas 5 років тому

      Yes while you are charging the Yeti the external battery is also charging when connected to the chaining port. It's important that the external battery and internal battery be close to the same charge level before you connect them. The chaining port is just an external tap to the internal battery inside the Yeti.

    I talked to goal zero: Can I chain a larger battery than 33ah to goal zero 400 like a 100ah? -Technically yes, though we don't really recommend chaining a battery that large to the 400 as that would take a very long time to recharge. So would it be better if I chain 3, 33ah batteries? -No, that's 99Ah so essentially the same. We don't generally recommend more than tripling the overall capacity of the Yeti (so, chaining 2 33Ah batteries) due to the limited input of the unit. what will be the consequence of hooking up larger batteries other than taking awhile for them to recharge? If they are charging from the solar wouldn't slow charge time not be a huge problem? -No real consequences, but the Yeti 400 will only accept a maximum input of 120W. The more you increase the overall capacity of the system, the longer it will take to recharge. What do you guys think, anything wrong with running bigger battery?

    • @StepanYakovlev
      @StepanYakovlev 5 років тому

      Nothing wrong. You waste either power/money from solar panels or power/money of batteries. Batteries are cheap compared to panels so meh. If you plan to use additional capacity only occasionally have at it, I have extra 100AH battery, but its pretty much only a backup if power goes down for a day or two, I understand that I am unlikely to recharge that 100AH fully. If you plan to use all of it every day and recharge it completely lets say you connect 100AH battery for total of133ah , recharging from 0 will require 1.5KW/h of energy, YETI 400 can pull only 120W every hour from solar, (and even less from regular power outlet), so even if you massively over provision your solar batteries like 4-5x (e.g. connect 500W of solar) to capture full 120W even during mornings, evenings and occasional cloud with12h of sunlight you're not going to recharge it in a day. If you plan to live in Alaska during summers only, the numbers change a bit, but you get the idea.
