Drilling with a Birdcage Awl
Переглядів 3982 роки тому
The birdcage awl is an incredibly useful tool for starting any kind of hole. It can even drill through 3/4" hardwood in just a few turns. It's great for starting screws as well. Why conventionally drill when it's just so fast and easy? The Brandon Woodworkers Club meets monthly at the Rockler store in Brandon, Florida. Woodworking Toolbox with Eagle Carving
Except for small Butcher Block, are these edge grain or face grain boards? The ones with three wider pieces are most probably face grain, but I was not sure about all other boards.
I have been obsessing on spreading glue on both matching pieces of each joint I glue up. As I watch Tyler here, I don’t see him spreading out glue, just running a relatively modest bead down the center of each board. And just moves on with it! Is this correct? What is your procedure for assuring enough but not excessive glue and squeeze out?
I noticed the same thing. I spread it out on one side and leave the other side dry. Since I xur by boards on Portable dewalt saw and not a Cabinet saw. I make up for the unevenness by apply tremendous pressure on clamps/ I noticed a lot of squeeze out. Hopefully I am not doing what he mentioned, squeezing out all the glue!
What, specifically, is the type and size rasp referred to? Both “French” and “Auriou” were mentioned. Thanks.
That rolling flag is magnificent!
Thanks so much Fred
Be careful with this method, you can ruin the veneer. It's very difficult to clean it afterwards
What do you mean? That is completely false. This is an incredibly easy method to clean. Cold water. That is it. If you ruined the veneer or project, that is user error.
@@ryanandrusky User error?? It's not a brand of soap or paint. There are several techniques in this. In Caoba sapelli if you use this technique you end up with glue stains in many parts, it will be due to the type of grain dunno. But tell me, what could I be doing wrong, if the technique is just to dirty the whole veneer with glue??? Putting glue on one side also works and you don't make a mess of everything
Saving for more planes without the misses knowing great idea as long as no one breaks in shed always a worry but brilliant idea
What is this type of fence system called ????are u making a video on how to build it??👍🏻👍🏻
Which size do you recommend?
This is great. I'm going to try out for some thin pieces!
Nice size and looks easy to use
It is! Thanks !!
That eagle is just so nice. What beautiful work. The closer you look the more you appreciate the work, skill, and talent that went into it. GREAT JOB!
Tops are fun to turn, they look simple but are great skill builders.
Too funny.
Makes me wonder if it could be adapted to help layout dovetails.
So simple yet so useful. Thanks for sharing this.
Love it. Now we all know where your stash is.
As a amateur woodworker I never thought I would have a plane. was gifted one recently and was told to check this video out. Not only did it highlight my mistakes in restoring the gift. But how to get it in working order. Great presentation sir.
Great to hear! So happy it helped you.
Oh man I bet that scraper got hot.
It does if you hold it in one place but if you keep it moving it isn't bad and the scraper doesn't need sharpening as often as you are using the entire edge. It sure beat sanding those edges both time and dust reduced dramatically.
New subscriber here. Could you show a set up and sharpening video for this little plane?
We will add it to our list. A little busy now but hopefully we can get to it before too long. Thank you for watching and subscribing.
This is very new to me and a skill I need to learn. Thank you! I now have scrapers and a burnisher, I just need to learn how to use them. Thank's again for your awesome video.
Glad you found it useful and thank you for subscribing. Please let us know if there are other tools/projects you are interested in seeing similar videos on.

Hilarious, those skits earned you a new sub! I use my hand clamps for most all the uses you showed. I especially like them to keep my fingers clear.
Glad you liked the video. We tried to make the subject a little more fun. Thanks so much for the sub!
Very nicely done. I enjoy watching live time with pleasant music.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks Ken
Most excellent. Down under the "Presentations ... " notes is the phrase "turning segmented bowels." Might want to correct that, although it could make for an interesting video!
Thanks for that! Good catch John. I have corrected it. LOL
GOOD JOB can't wait to see full finished chessboard and pieces
Thanks! I have wanted to do this for literally decades and the closer I get the more impatient I get.
Very nice!!! On the next one try it with no music and let’s hear the sweet relaxing sounds of turning. The whole ASMR thing is huge right now.
Thanks for the tip, we will try that.
