Frontier 2003 to 2006
This is the story of an extraordinary chain of events that happened between me and a patron through a commission that ran between 2003 and 2006. The project moved me to expand my design direction at a time when I was very seriously ill, and unknown to me, my patron Jeremy was dangerously ill himself. This project become a healing process for us both.
This story is not what you expect... It is much more.
This video was an amateur in-house production making the best of the rudimentary video equipment we had on hand. By the end of the three plus years this project was in motion, all those who participated were both excited and proud of their involvement.

Nice design, excellent build video - although the last 20 seconds are a bit boring. :) Thank you for sharing.

What’s a kestrel chair? Is that some well known design or something?

  • @joeblow9180

I can’t imagine you’re not seeing failures on those back support posts. Notching them out to receive the back rest seems sketchy for a part of the chair receiving an extraordinary amount of stress. It’s like creating a natural fault line for splits to form.

I took the Practical Woodworking Class between my 3rd and 4th years of college in 2006. I still have my hall table, and I've been making furniture professionally for over 10 years. The things I learned from Jeff have been foundational to how I approach my work. I look back on that week fondly and consider it to be the bedrock of my knowledge and passion.

What oil do you use and is it different for each chair? It looked like a minwax container for the cherry one and is no for the maple

We used boiled linseed oil on the cherry and walnut, and Osmo on the maple.

I am starting to do some woodworking and I watch a lot of woodworking videos....this is the first “couple” or “partner” video I have seen. Usually, the video is just a great woodworker working alone. Sooooo much better to have someone with you. Great job. Subscribed.
