Sonia's Journey
Sonia Blue’s life changed in 2003 when surgery to remove a brain tumor left her unable to swallow-a condition known as dysphagia. She’s not alone. Dysphagia affects up to 15 million Americans, yet it remains misunderstood and under-diagnosed, leaving millions without the support they need.
At the National Foundation of Swallowing Disorders, we’re working tirelessly to change that. From providing vital patient support and education to advocating for groundbreaking research, we’re empowering those living with dysphagia to lead better lives.

    I’m 29 years old and am extremely underweight at 90lbs. I am living off of nutritional shakes and water. No solid foods whatsoever. The fear of choking and vomiting are real and I can’t seem to conquer it. This just breaks my heart seeing people go through through this like me. It’s frustrating. I just want solid foods again. It just feels like a never ending pattern. No one understands unless they have gone through it or are helping others going through it. 💔

      @Victoria-dr9pc I'm still on the all liquid diet. I've done protein shake powder, oat milk, peanut butter mixed in, and some caramel syrup added in for the sweet taste. I also puree Ramen and add hot sauce and salt, but add about 2 cups of water, then eat it like that. Other than that I've only had 1 small breakthrough with the help of my partner with less than half of a chocolate chip muffin with butter to it, 3 bites. I'm still skeptical of solid foods, but I know I went to previous speech language pathologists, my Gastroenterologist cleared me, but said I have Gastritis and GERD. He ruled it as a psychological disorder as there was NO physical damage in my esophageal lining during my EGD and barium swallow!!! I have an eating disorder çalled ARFID caused by R-SA. 2 years and I'm still suffering, but I take liposomal Multivitamins by Mary Ruth. I Highly Recommend them for energy to get through the day. Good Vibes for you, me, and everyone else suffering from dysphagia!!!! PSA: PLEASE Go see a Gastroenterologist, SLP, Psychiatrist/Therapist as well!!!

Its really good bc it tastes like fries and it kind of feels like ur eating again! I got a gastroscopy and they didnt find anything «wrong».. they said i have like inflammation in two parts of my esophagus that kind of gives a feeling of something being stuck when I try to eat…. but nothing wrong wrong physically that would cause me to get food stuck in my esophagus, so now im back to square one…. I drink the nutricia multi fibre nutrition drink. It comes in a lot of flavours, but the only one I can get down is the chocolate one… Praying for us both and everyone that suffers from this! I know this video is from 9 years ago. My swallowing troubles began suddenly 2 years ago. I then was diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis but despite treatment for it my swallowing has continued to worsen. I am now at liquids. A tuna can from Aldi requires 2 L of water and I always risk choking so I just have found it's not worth it. There is more to life than food though that's what you learn. Right now I am just hoping I never have to get a feeding tube. I've put on weight which is good but I won't have an easy time if I start to have issues with clear liquids. And I'm only 29 (just turned 29) and that scares me as I know not being able to drink water is the last step for me if I continue to get worse. Then I'll basically be on life support. I know some people with feeding tubes can still sometimes drink but for me I don't think any drink would go in at that point so it would have to be pretty bad for me to get one. The video really resonates with me especially socializing and how you focus on your swallowing so much. But we can't let it consume us. Work helps keep me occupied. It would be nice to have more extensive videos on this but I know it's so rare and it's quite sad so probably can't watch more than the time here.

Why do we have teeth? to chew So I don't puree my food anymore I just chew it real good with some gravy or some kinda sauce its actually tastier. And I love puddings and tapioca so my food really hasn't changed too much let's all look on the brighter side of things we can do this 👍keep your hope up . I know people have worse dysphagia so enjoy the things you can eat even if it's a lil . We all have to live and wake up everyday cherish each day with our loved ones. don't let it get you down people trust God to see you through each day and live 1 day at a time. Jesus said don't worry 1 day has enough worry of its own don't think about tomorrows problems live day by day and don't let it stop you from enjoying life eat out with friends just explain to them your condition trust me they understand and order what you can eat and enjoy their company it's not all about food but being with the ones you love and the beautiful day God has made. I have had horrible anxiety for years especially 2020, had this cough hurt my throat since then had on and off achyness when intalk and eat....fast-forward to now this week all of a sudden having trouble swallowing I feel my mouth is super dry almost all the time, tongue spasms, I hesitate when I swallow and hurts going down. I have trouble swallowing pills so now I crush them or get powered or liquid meds for years. When I have swallowed my pill which is small but still feels huge to me I can crush it and swallow with water or whatever. Have had trouble for years downing it but its for my anxiety twice a day I have to take it so its important. I get anxiety attacks just taking them and til I get then down then I gradually calm down. That same feeling I get now with food I hesitate, have to be careful afraid of choking, seeing an ent tomorrow. Feels like there's something in my throat at times, not sure whats wrong with me if it's part mental part physical....but I feel like my chance at a normal life is over 😔🙁

    • @MKF30
      @MKF30 3 роки тому

      @@mashalight8699 Yeah sometimes things don't always show up but can still cause issues I've been told, the ENT did look down my throat so nothing blocking my throat and no polyps or anything which is good, but yeah I have to get the barium to see the esophagus. Because one thing I've noticed, when I choke often on water more than food, I have more trouble with liquids than food as odd as that may sound. My regular doctor said, that's normal. Some people struggle more on food than liquids, others liquids more than food etc, etc Yeah, I haven't gone to a gastro yet, the speech pathologist I saw the first time who was supposed to give me the barium swallow but didn't because that hospital she works for is stupid, with dumb rules and she was stubborn anyway. She refused to give me the test, probably to save money for the hospital told me "oh it's just anxiety and probably acid reflux" meanwhile the ENT had the script for the barium swallow, she didn't do her job and is allowed to undermine the doctor. So he sent me elsewhere, that's where I'm going in a few days. I spoke to another speech pathologist in another place not too far from where I live in another part of the city, she was nicer and recommended I get both barium swallows if I feel it's in the throat, which I feel it is. Now I know acid reflux and gerd can cause issues with the throat, it doesn't feel the same every day. Some days it's dryer, feels a slight burning sensation like it's coated so I can't feel the food in my throat before I swallow, I can kind of feel it there but not like I used to if that makes sense. Hard to describe, and my tongue will on occasion spasm or twitch. That I found out can also be rarely caused by acid reflux as the back of your tongue connects to your throat and esophagus muscles. Stress and fatigue can cause that too. At any rate, if they find nothing with the esophagus and just like "it's acid reflux" I'll just take medicine hope that works and maybe request the other barium swallow, that one I found out you eat a little apple sauce and they see how you're swallowing as it goes down.

So many people in his life, family and friends, would dismiss it as a stress related or emotional problem, despite the fact that he lost a lot of weight. Luckily doctors did not dismiss it. Dysphagia is caused by the upper esophogeal sphincter not functioning properly, whereas Achalasia is caused by the lower esphogeal sphincter not functioning properly (opening). Though opposite sphincters, they both cause difficulty with food/drink going down.

    I've had dysphagia for about 5 years now. About a year ago I discovered a way for me to swallow food using an inversion table. After chewing my food I lean back on the inversion table to the point where I'm slightly in an upside down position and that allows the food to fall to the back of my throat making it possible for me to swallow. However this method only works for food and not liquids.

      @@mvrdvrerr I am a little better now. I was finally diagnosed with GERD, which is basically chronic reflux. My reflux was so bad it constricted my esophagus, preventing me from swallowing safely. I had to have a procedure done to fix the problem. Even after the procedure, I still felt like I couldn't swallow, but it became more mental then physical because I actually could swallow now. I had to go through mental health treatment to get through that. I'm better now, but I still find it quite hard to drink some liquids, specifically water. Thanks for asking.

      @@louricaneal7314 what are the symptoms of GERD? i don’t know what’s going on with me

    • @louricaneal7314
      @louricaneal7314 Рік тому

      @@mvrdvrerr the symptoms are regurgitation, which means throwing up a little in your mouth after eating certain foods, heartburn (which can either be felt in your chest or throat), choking sensations at night (it feels like someone is choking you in your sleep, and when you wake up your throat feels tighter), acid taste in your mouth, burning sensation in your stomach, acid bubbling that can be felt in your throat and in severe cases, difficulty swallowing. When you experience difficulty swallowing, this means that the acid has physically damaged your esophagus.

    Sonia...when you were on a feeding tube, what were you doing to help the situation? I'm asking for my husband who has suffered with tonsil cancer and now has severe neck fibrosis with a hardened neck and dysphagia. He has been on the tube feed for past 6 months. We are desperate to help him.
