Shortly after teaching middle school Social Studies for the first time (Ancient Civilizations), I thought it would be cool to cast my own historically-faithful bronze sword. That Spring Break (March/April of 2021), I started metal casting as a new hobby. After watching lots and lots and lots of casting videos and following dozens of casting channels, and after nine months of my own casting, I decided to start putting my own vidoes on UA-cam. Who knows, maybe I'll have something started to keep me out of trouble after retirement (in just a few years). 😉
S03, E12: Hamburger patty mold
School is out, summer is here, and it is burger season.
Music:
"March of the Slaves" played on my Epiphone Les Paul Special II through my Digitech RP355. I'm playing my old late 1960s vintage Yamaha four piece drum set from when I was a kid in junior high in the late 1970s, with an economy Zildjian cymbal pack from the mid 1990s (Scimitars? I'll have to double check). I eventually gave the entire set to my son Bradly in the early 2000s, which is where the set lives. "March of the Slaves" is written by James Freeman, Alicia Fink, and Bradly Freeman.

I was asked by a former student if I have ever made anything useful. While I thought my plant stand was fairly useful, they actually meant if I made a machine or at least a machine part. I think this disk for a honey/fruit press qualifies. And it's a chance to test out AI again. This time I cut down my individual clips before sending them off to Skynet. Blessings in your new place!! I hope you do well there.

Why was it not carved well?
I did this mold quick and dirty on Tinkercad. Had I done proper work I would have put draft along the inside and outside edges.
this is awesome
Thank you.

Will I need to call an exterminator?
Mr freeman it’s me Michael I told you I would comment
You told me this today?

now you'll just have to figure out what, if anything you need to spray on the top for simplier release.
Chatter, I asked my daughter about that before the pour (off camera). She was concerned about contaminating the soap. I do not know the ins and outs of her soap making (all-nature or organic or anything she might have going on there), but with her being a chemist, I deferred to her judgement on using any sort of release. Thanks for the comment, Chatter. I'm sure others were thinking the same way you and I were.
Constructive feedback, the algorithm recommended me this, so I watched the whole thing (on mute) to help you out. Intro is way too long. Lots of boring footage. Music is obnoxious. Some places to improve. Hope you find success in the future!
I have learned over the years that my intros are not for everyone.
nah...I only watched half of the video, the pictures of 'Foundry Sand' lingered too long and I got bored. I then checked out one of your edited videos and subscribed from that.
The honest answer to the question posed in the title is 'no'.
Ai failed. Too much unnecessary footage.
wood ?
The handle is wood, sword and pommel are aluminum.
Your metalwork is excellent; your videos could use some editing. I would advise recording everything with two cameras and then using cuts. I subscribed to support you.
Thank you for your support, Tony!
The dremal sanding was painful to watch. How many hours were you there sanding? You really need to get a real belt sander. It would pay for itself, it dremal bits alone, not to mention time and your sanitary. But great job getting it done with what you have. I only say this because I myself have spent way to much time using a dremal. 2x72 belt sander saved me. I made my own at first.
I add pieces of equipment to my shop/shed bit by bit. A belt sander is on the list.
Hi Mr freeman I was in ur class first term!
Hi mr.Freeman im in your creative writing class.
Hi Mr.Freeman
👍
That’s intro was both satisfying and unsatisfying at the same time
This is rlly good
Thank you.
I like it better the more I hear it, nice job Jim.
Funny you should say that. I was telling Brad the same thing. I am a little more happy with it than I was when I first put it together.
This is actually good
I think you should try to make a Mando helmet that has a 2 year for starting your channel.
Hello Mr freeman it is nice to see that you have 400 hundred subs.
Good work, 2 years is impressive, keep up the good work ❤
You should make the Star Wars currency credits as seen in The Mandalorian
I might have that on the slate to complete by May 5th. 🙂
1. If your sand was straight out of the bag it wasn't dry. It has to be completely dry. I put mine on concrete to suck out the moisture. 2. You stopped pouring in the middle of it. As soon as you stop pouring the sand will cave in and you'll have a failed cast. 3. You used a piece of aluminum for your pouring cup... It melted. That's why I used steel soup cans.
"go vandals" boo!
😂
Where did you get 900+ cans?
And I have 1000+ and 1100+ waiting in the wings! I am a bit behind in my can melting. To answer your question, I get a lot of cans from my co-workers and some from students from the school I teach at.
some boron spray may have helped there, I think that is the stuff I've used before when pouring copper and brass into light weight molds to keep it from sticking. I've also seen others do that for alum on alum pours like you were doing. Stuff isn't real cheap, but it lasts for a few pours each spray from what I recall.
Chatter, I will look into this. Thank you.
Looking forward to seeing this. I used tape once, and i dont think it worked out well. I dont remember... You have a crucible yhat holds yhat much aluminum???
I plan to make this pour this weekend (with the video sechedule for Dec. 13). That's my biggest concern, crucible capacity. I didn't think about it one bit until after I initially cut out the foam pieces. Then, after spending all that time doing that, I had to decide if I was wanted to keep going, or scrap what I had done and retry after resizing the project. I decided to press on, if for no other reason than gained experience. And it will make for an interesting video (I hope). I already have in mind what I will need to do for my secod attempt. I'm also thinking about swtiching to investment/ceramic slurry instead of plaster. Dipping/submerging the foam will probably do a better job of getting into the nooks and crannies of the piece, which include two tunnels. There is only one real problem that I can "see" in my head with what I have in mind if/when I need to make that second attempt . . . it will probably need to be asymmetric. I love symmetry. Ahhhh . . . it's part of the journey.
HECK YEAH KEEP UP THE WORK MAN

Hello hello
Hello, Andrew!
I think this is beautiful, a wonderful tribute to Pepper. I wouldn’t be able to narrate either. Love to your family, I think it’s great your daughter does the hearts for those who know the pain of miscarriage. Thank you for sharing this with us Brother Freeman.
Brother that came out beautiful! And it’s so perfect for the stand!
Great video! Sorry to hear about your past losses. I have a cat and she is 13. I'd hate to see her go 😞
Hey Mr. Freeman this is Cameron I am in your 2nd period this is so cool that you do this, it is amazing see you on Monday.
It came out great! It's surprising sometimes how aluminum can flow through such a small space.
A work of art , beautiful done 👍
Yo Mr. Freeman whats up im still watching your videos its Raiden!
Yo, Raiden!
Awesome! Thanks for including me in the video. I can't wait to see what you make.
Pic's or it didn't happen 🤣🤣🤣🤣
So question Brother Freeman, is this entire process just to pull metal for scrapping/recycling purposes? I don't really understand but I want to learn more about what my favorite people are doing in their videos.
The very first reason for doing all of this was to see if I could recycle enough metal off of PC boards to make one of my Imperial ingots. I figured my students would think it was cool to make a bar of metal out of computer parts. But then I started watching other videos, videos from Screetips and started thinking that after I make my ingot, maybe I could chemically separate each of the metals I recover from the PC boards. I'm not sure it makes a lot of sense for an individual to try to recycle metal from PC boards in the garage. I've seen videos where large amounts of material is process and lots of metal is recovered, but I'm not sure that process scales down very well. So, I'm thinking I'll probably stop at a single ingot when it is all said and done (and after I get a couple more videos out of the whole process).
ok! Now I understand a little bit more, thank you for the explanation sir!@@freemanmetalworks1698
@@justanothermeltingchannel JAM, my pleasure. It's always great to have a chat with you.
I don't know that I've ever thought of something like this, that would make an interesting casting session. Now I need to find something from my teaching days to cast that represents those years of my life. Loved the video Sir Freeman!
I've got 7 years before retirement (Rule of 90 here in Idaho). Who knows what I'll add to the eraser and pencil collection. JAM, as always, thanks for dropping a note!
I’m looking forward to seeing this cast and how it works out. My friend that I made the goonies key for told me I need to get a 3D printer. Truth be told, aside from not having room for one in my already crowded small home, I’m also not wanting to spend time having to learn new terminology, learning software, and fine tuning a machine that I’ve no experience with. But then I see things like this and it makes me wonder if my fear and/or laziness in sticking with my own methods is holding me back. Maybe if I can be consistent with what I’m doing and making I’ll consider it.
There has been soooo much equipment creep in this hobby. Just as I am sort of getting comfortable with my 3D printer, I seeing all sorts of reasons to get a resin printer. I've got a second multi-step project that I am working on alongside this plant stand (the first part of that project lands next week), and I ended up buying some equipment for it (that ended up being the second step of that project). In my head I think I know how that will work, but until I start in on it, who knows. Yeah, unexpected expense and learning curve. I think there is a life principle in this somewhere, but I haven't had my coffee yet this morning, so I'll have to dig out it out later.😉
Nice job 👍 I think you could have made that entire piece in tinkercad. I don't think you needed 3d builder.
