    I am tired to look to a people filming themselves reading from a paper or a prompter what they have to say. And about the rule of thirds... too much people talk about this small subject and not at all relevant. But it is what it is. You must provide clips after clips. :)

    4:07 This image would look _so_ much better if somebody could please vomit into the lower left corner… This is a ”composition“ of a left-handed moron pretending he knows something about photography.

  • @markgoostree6334

    Well, first off, I don't do well remembering rules of photography... there are too many. When I look through the lens I just try to make things "work" and that is where I am... shoot for fun, shoot for what looks good to my eye, and don't worry about it.

    • @iamtr1stan
      @iamtr1stan 2 місяці тому

      That's what it's about for most people. It's about enjoying the process. These "rules" shouldn't be seen as anything more than mere guidelines, because that is what they are. These composition standards give creatives something to easy to remember and to fall back on whenever needed. But they should not be seen as limitations. If something better presents itself through your viewfinder, follow your gut:)

    • @ross_wilson
      @ross_wilson 2 місяці тому

      I regret not using the word guidelines in this video as you are both right, if something different presents itself that breaks all the "rules" then go for it, it's about what looks good to you at the end :)

    While I agree that using other techniques can improve your photography I still think starting with TROT is very important to get the basic idea of how a composition should work. Especially for those who's coming into photography. It's a lot in the beginning to think about and mixing a lot of different compositional techniques into that will only overwhelm (most) people.

    • @ross_wilson
      @ross_wilson 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for the comment, and I agree it's a great technique for understanding the importance of composition. And also true, trying to do everything at once can be overwhelming especially when starting out.

    Fun fact about the "rule" of thirds: it was _never_ used before 1797, and has _never_ been used sinc by any major painter or photographer. Granted, it could be a crutch to take people from a neophyte to a beginner level, when photos were taken with camaera that had that central circle for focusing and neophytes had a tendency to place the subject dead center on that circle. But with smartphones and modern cameras, I strongly believe this "rule of thirds" should be taught and explicitely decribed as a complete beginner aid, but then the first and most important true rule should be introduced: balance.

    • @ross_wilson
      @ross_wilson 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for the comment! Ah that's good to know, and I agree it's a good beginner tool to help move towards balance and other techniques. Interesting to know that no-one major painter has used since.

  • @ZheikoNileth
    @ZheikoNileth 2 місяці тому

    Its really difficult sometimes, but I like to cheat the rule of thirds with game of lines in the image. If you have naturally appearing lines leading to your subject, it doesn't really matter whether its on the arbitrary grid - it brings the eyes towards the subject one way or another. But so far I had luck only very few times to really pull it off! Great video and thanks for a book recommendation!

    • @ross_wilson
      @ross_wilson 2 місяці тому

      It's a tricky one when it's something that people are used to seeing and generally works well. But I'm the same if I see some natural lines, I'm a big fan of just seeing how that will turn out when I take the shot! Like all things it's getting out there and just taking more shots (which is easier said than done!)

    • @ross_wilson
      @ross_wilson 4 місяці тому

      Financially, I worked on a client side teaching music to have some more regular income. Definantly lost hope on the store, but then doing the product research side was what allowed me to find my competition check if my product was still selling in the market or if there was something better. I spent a lot of time on Everbee finding things then created some new listings more in line with competition and paid marketing for about $3 per day to test it. This really helped recover my store.

      Thanks for the comment, the FAQ photos were a game changer to reduce customer messages. Personally I only stay in the UK market as I can manage delivery expectations better. I have though of partnering internationally for printing but at the moment its easier national and I get the sales I need, so I'd rather keep the rep of the store high with good reviews and stay national rather than risk international.

      Hey, thanks for the comment! AI art is definately the trend at the moment but i find most people are still looking for unique bits or art and handmade. I do have some training and materials coming soon to help start or improve shops (so bit of watch this space) but I wouldn't say your art is ever useless, it might come down to how it's packaged as a listing, SEO photos etc, or it could be that the audience for your art might not be on Etsy but a different platform. I've had products in the past that didn't do well on Etsy but worked better through my own website.

    I loved the #3 settings and showing what happens at different shutter speeds. Now I know how to view what I am looking for with the examples. I really liked the 0.6 sec the best. I have struggled with what actually looks nicer. This really answered my questions and thoughts on what I want and looks best. I finally got the ND filter for my new lens yesterday. We are heading for rough surf (warning just popped up) here in San Diego with coming rain storm in a few days. Excited to go back out at mid to low tide to see what I will capture. Thats a great tutorial. Thank you. I use Affinity Photo for my edits; its a powerful tool, but without presets. I feel my images are lacking 'punch' and, well, the professional look and feel. It's a great tool but as of now I gotta disagree with just shooting everything in focus thinking you might as well fix it in the edit. The Ai tool produces some strange artefacts on the edges between stuff that's in and out of focus, in-camera still does it a lot better.

    • @ross_wilson
      @ross_wilson Рік тому

      Oh I agree, I'm not going to be shooting everything in focus at f13 above. With a lot of these new tools I'm keen to push them when shooting to see what can be achieved as I always try to think about the edit when shooting, so will try shooting at different focus' and see how the edits go. The Bokeh addition is particularly cool! Hopefully as Adobe gets feedback the artefacts will be improved.

      Thanks for the comment and sub! I haven't tried it as I usually make use of the tone curve and colour grade for this style. You could try unifying the cool and warm colours in the HSL sliders and removing the other colours, in the past to achieve a similar look I have also used in Photoshop a solid blue colour overlay to act as colour grading. Hope this helps!
