BFP Episode 9: FCAS for Belgium, good or bad idea (my 2 cents)
Переглядів 988Рік тому
There has been alot of discussion on the topic of wether or not Belgium should join the development of the FCAS project. A decision that is controversial to say the least, as many say belgium does not need such an aircraft, especially as we are already commited to an order for 34 Lockheed F-35A's, and the first aircraft hasnt even entered service yet. So i thought i would give my 2 cents as to ...

The Story of the Sabca S.47 does not begin in Belgium, but in Italy. And it starts with one man, one of the most famous Italian aircraft designers, Giovanni Caproni. After the sad end of Ca.335, Caproni proposed a monoplace version of this aircraft to Regia Aeronautica, for dive bomber use, called Ca.355 and powered by an inverted vee air cooled engine, the Isotta Fraschini 'Delta'. It remained a prototype since had performances inferior to those of Ju.87 Stuka at the time used by Italy as dive bombers

Man these are some fascinating oddballs. That radial engined Caproni fighter resembles an enlarged American Fleetwings Sophomore trainer. And yes, the V12 Caproni looks quite a lot like the Fulmar (which was designed by a Belgian!).

That requirement about the F.VII wheels is hilarious. The GR.8's aft fuselage and tail are really rather sleek, a complete mismatch to the almost comically ungainly remainder. Conversely the CR.9 looks exceedingly sleek. The portlier transport variant makes me think of the postwar French Dassault Flamant... Fascinating stuff.

Wondered what had become of this design. It was considered for a while by Canada as a potential replacement for the Canadair Tutor for training of CF and NATO pilots. Canada ultimately chose the BAe Hawk...all that predates the Alberta Aerospace sequence of events, which I'm fairly sure I was completely unaware of!

Never heard of this beast, though I'm certainly aware of the fine little SV4. From the front, the SV10 reminds me of a Canadian light transport of the same period, the Fleet 60K Freighter. The Fleet had more success than the SV10, but became notorious for catching fire...

Canada calling. Subbing after viewing just the one video; hoping you may eventually do the Belgian part of the Avro Canada CF-100 story, Belgium having been the only nation other than Canada to operate the "Clunk". One of the batch of CF-100s intended for Belgium survives today in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. It suffered a ground mishap before delivery and was replaced in the order by another CF-100, later entering RCAF service instead after repair. Ironically though all the Belgian examples were scrapped at Koksijde after retirement, the "one that got away" was preserved after the RCAF retired it... Another Belgian-connected type, and a really fascinating one, is the deMonge-Bugatti 100P racer of 1938-39. Though the project bore the name of the famous Italo-French carmaker, its design was by Belgian engineer Louis deMonge. The 100P was a real stunner, and the one airframe built survives today in a US museum.

Arguably the most logical option would be to just buy a decent number of H-145Ms, and a modest number of larger H-225Ms if necessary, potentially contracted out. The H-145M is big enough for most basic roles, but can also do special forces support and other missions. A single type fleet would be far more easily supported too. The idea of buying a small fleet of Chinooks is, frankly, nuts. Belgium simply doesn’t need them, and they’d just become hangar queens, before being sold off. Better to stick to what you can genuinely afford to keep. If you really wanted Chinooks, much better to contract it out to a joint squadron with Germany/Nederland/UK.

TCO and operational efficiency were predictable. Politics and military command preferences overruled common sense. Their F35 will be an even bigger financial hangover. Belgium is a city state And a modern military force on the 3 major components is unaffordable. A civil and drone army is the only potential to discourage potential adversaries. .

I've always been intrigued by the Caproni 355. Making a two seater with 870hp that can fly at 500 km/h seems impressive. Still not fast enough to go toe-to-toe with the Me109, but maybe the Caproni would at least have managed to hold its own. The whole Belgian concept of fighter/rec/light bomber all-in-one concept is fascinating in it's own.

Super Tucano might be an outsider, but would be a very nice addition. And I agree that the drone without any weapons would be a toothless lion, far smaler drones are better suited for reconaissance. It is also rumoured that Belgium is looking back at C 130's as the A400M's are too big for many tasks.

so we spent 600 Million for the replacement of a fighter we don't have yet , yet we have almost no Air defence capability...No mobile AA platforms , No Patriot system or comparable systems , No mobile long range platforms like the HIMARS , no medium and heavy helicopters yet and no 3th frigate or ( 2 corvette to boost our coastline defence ) , no tanks and no additional drones ..... Not even the Tiger attack helicopter since our combat groups are based to work with them in mind... So imo waste of money at this point .... And just a political cash handout to ease the tensions between us and that hypocrite of France who is still salty cus we chose the F35 over his soon to be obsolete Rafale...
