    What is the Prism like from a latency point of view? I was tracking at a friend' splace who was using the Lyra 2 and it was quite noticeable. This of course is entirely possible to be a set-up thing. DAW used was Cubase.

    It's a pity, but the quality of this device is like cheap Chinese junk - as soon as it was unpacked and assembled, I had to return it to the seller, because the vacuum arm was crooked and did not even touch the vinyl record - there was a 1mm gap on one side, a 6mm gap on the other - a total nightmare, I do not recommend anyone to participate in the lottery of quality.

    I’ve not heard a resor but have heard a Condesa and a MasterSounds and really want an ‘audiophile’ mixer as, like you, I have my two decks near my music making corner and do not have space for a dedicated hifi system just now -i just listen to records on my ‘DJ’ decks through a basic pioneer DJM, which still sounds good but not as good as even a basic hifi separates setup. But ultimately… let’s face it… the aesthetics of these mixers is orgasmic. There’s something satisfying about ‘no expense spared’ lifetime products in a world of mass-produced stuff made to hit a price point.

    I compared the prism Lyra in my mastering room with the RME ADI 2. The prism converters sounded dark and meh to me honestly, although on somethings I could see them sounding nice and slightly euphorically warm. RME was cleaner and more precises sounding, at the risk of being more sterile. The RME with the filters in the warmest mode are close but still more top end then the prism, that’s with a low pass filter on the RME starting at 10k🧐. Beyond this, the prism drivers sucked, pops and clicks made it not even usable on one master in my rig. The aes didn’t talk well with my Hedd speakers, problems there. And the routing software wasn’t robust enough to handle basic routing things I needed and use every day with total mix. Back it went. Maybe someday I’ll try the dream unit in conjunction with RME running as the interface hub. That’s my position now. Got a RME ucx2 running as my interface and adi2 as a converter over spdif. Will add other converters over aes/adat/spdif but sticking with RME drivers, total mix and rock solid sound quality. I’ll get my mojo for now from my analog gear. Cheers!✌️

      @@portwill Go Watch ASR he mesures every DAC with an apx555 ( 30k$ ). When you listen to 2 dac except if one is really badly engineered or if one uses distortion on purpose to color the sound, ( eg r2r or tubes ) which you wouldn’t want for mastering, you can’t tell the difference in a proper blind test because you are listening with many biais ( money in line ) that make you more attentive thus hearing more details ( in short but it’s more complex ) it’s been studied extensively, your brain doesn’t always show you what’s real, if you do mixing or mastering you should already know about about the psychoacoustic field, but it’d actually way deeper, the correlation between price and performance of DAC was evaluated around 0.9%, mainly because there was a big technology step up in the last 10 years ( not only with DAC but with most technology in general ) but also cause there is a market of audiophile who would buy overpriced things without knowing anything about how they work. Most of what a DAC has to do is reproduce the sound with the less distortion and noise possible, and the most linear frequency response, and that is measurable with the right tools, we can mesure way more than we can hear, apx555 hardware can mesure 1mhz frequency.

    • @portwill

      @@AaezZzze I get where you are coming from. This is not an "audiophile" equipment, it is meant to to be used in a studio as ADDA. In that regard there is not many that can do rountrip recording with de facto same results after many loop cycles (that has little to do with your distortion measurements that are anyway houndreds of times lower than any transducers). RME, although is a fantastic company and produces great DACs is far from this performance. You can argue all day, please do your own recording with RME and with Prism and check degradation per recording cycle and come back with your results. There are quite a lot you and I don't know about psychoacoustics as the field of science is constantly finding newer and newer evidence against what we thought was common knowledge (like nothing makes a difference above 20kHz). The goal of this equipment is to provide an accurate conversion in and out. In that regard if you actually do listen to them side-by-side you will certainly hear a difference that is not marginal. I mean, you don't need to measure if the bass is detailed or not, you should be able to hear it. If you don't, then nothing to worry about, get the one that is cheaper. My kind suggestion to you is to not listen to anyone (including me) and do your own research instead of coming to conclusions based on what you read somewhere.

    • @AaezZzze
      @AaezZzze 3 місяці тому

      @@portwill I was talking about your comment on the DA part only not AD. Listening side by side induces many biais which are studied since many years, I encourage you to read those studies because those products were made using science not listening test subjects to human flaws which aren’t even following a serious blinded protocol. Your hears and your brain are connected together, and they adapt to what they receive, you probably know this when tou have to make EQ decisions you should close your eyes. When you want to compare DACS by hear you can’t do it alone or you will want to like the more expensive one more thus hear more from it.

    I don't have RME, but I was looking for that best possible DA sound in both speakers and headphones. So I kind of found Prism Sound Lyra. But if you say that I have to heavily lower the buffer size.. Man that makes me think of not buying it. Is this needed because of some heavy processing for the sake of better quality or is it just lazyness on Prism Sound side of not working hard enough on their products... Honestly I want a good audio interface, but especially DA and headphone amp is the most important thing for me. Routing and recording is secondary..

      @@portwill Thanks for the quick answer. In another of your videos I saw this setup. Your main workstation is a Mac. But I guess as the centerpiece is RME, then this setup works both on Mac and Windows. So Mac is just your preference? Now to the solution: its basically RME Digiface connected to the Mac/PC via USB, then connect Lyra to RME via ADAT, then speakers and headphones connected to Lyra (yes you also have a optical switch, but I am just generally talking about the logic behind the setup). And within TotalMix you set the audio to go to Lyra? Something like this? By the way, I was surpised you use M50x. Not that these are bad, but they dont seem in the same ballpark as the Lyra. I own a pair of M50x, but I mainly use Sennheiser HD 650.

    Do you have to empty any container after using for a few times?? You said nothing about this .

      @portwill 10 місяців тому

      I have used it a lot since and have never needed to empty it. It pretty much dries up in a day if you don't clean 100 records every day. The most I cleaned in a sitting was 20 records.

    Hey! I’m also someone who plans to purchase a new professional grade interface for my studio. Like you, use a lot of midi instruments and additionally prioritize stability and buffer size above all. Given the parameters, do you think something like the UFX III would be the optimal choice? Im weighing against Lynx and Prism currently.

    • @portwill
      @portwill 10 місяців тому

      Hey! I think you’re gonna love the UFX if you decide on it. If you need that little something you could also use RME digiface and the Prism only as an AD/DA (via Adat Optical) - this is what I ended up doing. I would also check the Merging Tech interfaces. I don’t have experience with them but in theory they bring the best in performance and sound. Hope this helps

      @@portwill Thanks for the insight! I’ll check those out today and see what I think. I’d consider the digiface prism combo since I was only looking at it for conversion quality anyways. Much appreciated and thanks for the response!

    Through which outputs are your monitors connected? If you intend to route the audio back into the (DAW) for printing, which inputs do you utilize? I'm attempting to avoid a dual signal that might induce phase issues.

    • @portwill
      @portwill 11 місяців тому

      Hey Eddie! I use outputs 1-2 for the mains and then I use the line level input (symmetrical Jack) for inputs 1-2. I do not have phase issues as the signal going out for processing is on outputs 3-4 and that is not sent to the speaker outs. I hope I understood your question well.

    The real question why does the last three or four feet of power cord matter so much and why not the romex in the walls and ceiling and the main from the street to the breaker box? Wouldn't the ordinary solid core Home Depot romex have a bad effect? I'll make an admission, I did buy a few really nice PS Audio power outlets for the spots I plugin in my audio equipment because I thought the "grip" force of the PS Audios plug might be an advantage. For power amps I think there is an argument that you want a very solid grip on the plug and the PS audio outlets are very strong. My house otherwise has the crappy contractor outlets the house came with. In some cases I can plug something in and it won't work because the tabs are "floating" in the outlet (one particular one I've not replaced yet). Another thing that might make sense would be running over guaged Romex to the outlet(s) used by the power amps, like the romex you'd usually use for a electric clothes dryer. In my case the walls were already finished so I'm not interested in doing that.

      By the time it gets to your home most of the noise is below what your household items and connected gear produces. Your own equipments pollute your signal the most. Also if you watch the video I talk about the importance of shielding too. Also, I talk about how electric cables are not like water pipes and indeed whats behind a circuit matters.

    • @portwill
      @portwill 11 місяців тому

      I’m glad you like it. The Pangea cables are used for hifi currently as I have my old Focal system in another house. Those are fantastic cables but I started building my own for my studio. I still need to make lots of cables but eventually will get there.

    Do you have links to the tutorials for Pro Tools you mentioned? I've been using Ableton Live for 12 years, so I know it very well. Launching Pro Tools on a Windows machine with it's "Windows XP" style interface was, in itself, very daunting!

    RME has updated the chips and headphone amp on the RME ADI 2/4 in 2023 and also the Interface UFX III 3.0. I wonder if these are better than the prism. I am going to upgrade to the newest RME but would go with prism if it's better

    • @portwill
      @portwill Рік тому

      Yeah I read it somewhere. The older I get the more I question what “better” is really. In terms of micro-details I have a feeling it may outperform RME but in overall functionality, drivers and price you can hardly get better than RME.
