WHY I LOVE THE VW MK4 JETTA/GOLF
Переглядів 19 тис.2 роки тому
WHY I LOVE THE VOLKSWAGEN JETTA MK4 JETTA/GOLF/R32! For years after they stopped making the fourth generation of the Jetta, Golf, and R32, people have still been in love with them. The 'early 90s' look that they bring to the car scene is irreplaceable. Do they still look good in 2022? Here's what I think and why I have been obsessed for the last 6 years! Disclaimer- This is an opinion! (But MK5...

    I own a mk4 vw jetta wagon 1.8t manual and tbh it is by far my favorite car of all time. I can agree with that burn crayon smell ever since i stepped in i fell in love with it. I will never sell my vw as it is my daily driver. It is currently at 293865 miles and it still pulls. I am planning on dropping the gli manual tranny and new upgraded internals. If you ever get your hands on a manual 1.8t or vr6 keep it you will not regret it but only on mk4.. The whole aspect of the car is so sick..

    217k on my 2003 Jetta GLS TDI with a manual transmission and still runs like a Swiss watch. I've encountered a number of issues, but nothing I haven't been able to remedy myself. The car runs and drives like it has 60k miles on it. When I tell people it's a 2003 and has 217k miles, they're shocked.

He 2.0 with a Neuspeee supercharger and a full suspension. Amazing car handles great! Recently sold it to my friend's kid. Hard to let go for sure! My relationship with my mk4 is similar to an ex girlfriend i had, she was crazy always making me furious, it’s a relationship of hate and love. Crap at some point i will have to let it go as well. Yeah mine is tdi 1.9 VE ALH 02a 5speed manual 1999.5. 240k odo I hate this car because the electric is junk, or turned out junk a long the time always some blown fuse somewhere and i always don’t think might be a fuse, wasting hours with this shitty car. I have no much mods. Just egr delete with block plate i just cut a piece of metal and blocked the exhaust coming from the egr cooler. And disconnect the vaccum line from the egr valve. Drilled a hole at the egr to connect a boost gauge. I got the car for free, was almost on limp mode i guessing. I had to clean all the clogged parts on it, this why deleting the egr but all the pasts still installed,just as said blocked the exhaust coming to intake. I also added a oil catch can. Just now using some silver heat aluminum tape on some parts to see if cools parts down a bit, was black i painted white with rust oleum and roll and brush, sanded down a lot and clear coated the whole thing. Did headlight retrofit. Had the inlet turbo oil line leaking for awhile, last Time lost 2 qt of oil don’t know how i made it driving for 3.5 hrs. Up on the mountains pass. Fixed it already with new line. Replaced a lot of parts that seals . These parts keep going bad. I heard the engine is pretty reliable. Might be leaking,seaping oil from the valve seals. Because blue smoke at first starting,later goes away but even though smoke is not black i notice the car always gets dirty black smudge on the rear of the around . I already expended close to $4k damn i hate this car. Ok now why i keep it and love it. I love the turbo sound like truck lol. I love it. The car does great going up on the mountains, i can take 90mph and even more going up on 5th gear. I pass anything if i want. On the numbers the torque and hp seems ridiculous low but the little car is a beast. I love how it grabs the asphalt on turns and breaking. Driving on snow ??? Holy shit does great just using snow tires with studs, and even wrong size,185/65/15, it should be least 195/65/15. The car doesn’t loose control. I could one time go 50mph when others on 35mph would spin, maybe they didn’t have snow tires, when snow was thick and high level i still didn’t need use any chains(i had in the trunk if needed).4x4 trucks couldn’t go keep same Pace. I loved it.!!!! Even pressing the gas pedal down the floor it still does same good mileage 45/47 mpg. City driving with ac on summer does 39mpg. I counted already the mileage on maps and not only trusting the speedometer And odo. Two occasions the car went down the driveway and hit neighbors car and me backing on heavy snow storm ounce and the rear had no damage. It’s very thick strong body this car. Very quiet driving compared to a corolla any year. And the steering stays center going on the highway and keeps stiff the steering wheel. I like that. Feels very secure on highway.. iam about to replace all the suspension stuff, with oem parts this is also one thing i like. Easy to find online parts made in europe. The other things i hate is all this plastic junk on the car, and is important parts made of plastic, WTF?!!! Clutch slave and master cylinders, trans side shift bracket. And many other important parts that should been made ou of metal. I hate these cars being low and having the oil pan sticking down like asking to get hit by a rock or worse. I will add engine mount spacers soon as it arrives

    As a 40 year old kid that was just getting my license in the days of mk4… they will forever be one of my favorite cars. I’m not even a “car guy”. The first vehicle I ever bought was a 1984 VW scirocco (dubbed by my friends the shit-rocket) but all I REALLY wanted was 337 that came out the year I graduated highschool (and then the 20th anniversary after I moved across the country where one of my new friends had JUST bought a 337). Now as an elder teenager I finally have a 2003 GTI (not an actual AE but it’s been retrofit with body kit and I’m installing the brushed trim as we speak and has BBS wheels like the 337) and a 2005 GTI that came with aristos that I’ve already converted most of the way to a faux anniversary. The beautiful thing about these cars, besides everything you mentioned, is how easy they are to work on (compared to newer vehicles especially). Plus there are tons of junked vehicles to pull from to fix stuff that breaks over time as well as a plethora of aftermarket parts that are sometimes better than OEM. They may not be as reliable as a 1999 Toyota Carolla (my mom had one that would not die even if you never changed the oil), but they feel like you are driving an actual machine and look cool while doing so. Older Honda and Toyotas from the same era feel like driving a toy. Someday I’ll own a mk7 GTI… but I’ll always keep fixing up this 2003 and keep it around. 🤙🏽

      I had a jetta 2001 then I changed it for a civic 2000 and that's exactly what I felt when I changed to the civic, that I was driving a toy.😂I could notice the difference even more when I was driving at high speed.

    • @JoelCaseyJonesMusic
      @JoelCaseyJonesMusic Місяць тому

      @ yeah those old Hondas and Toyotas are quite reliable but I just prefer operating a machine. My wife and I had a 2001 civic and it never gave us trouble but it just never did it for me. Also the amount of power you can get with very little modification on the 1.8t is pretty insane… Really a fun platform for building out.

      @@marcoenrique8309 nothing I’d call actual trouble. I’ve had to change the timing belt, tensioners, and water pump due to age, but she keeps running strong. Stay on oil changes @ 5k and keep her filled with g12 and she’s happy.

    • @JoelCaseyJonesMusic
      @JoelCaseyJonesMusic Місяць тому

      @@marcoenrique8309 also a lesser known tip, make sure and fill with premium gas the 1.8t is a high compression engine and lower octane can cause pre-ignition thereby causing damage to pistons and valves. I really love mine though. Very easy to work on and maintain.

    "burnt crayon smell" - hilarious. I just picked up a one owner 1.8T 2001 Jetta from my neighbor who was just about to donate it to charity... I couldn't let that happen. My kids call it the "crayon car", and I figured it was some odd cleaner my neighbor had been using! Glue... who knew (not me)!

  • @housearrestproductions2240

    As someone who has owned a MK4 VR6 in the past and who CURRENTLY owns a MK4 2.0L, I gotta say that the MK4 2.0L is probably the EASIEST car I've ever worked on. I stupidly sold my VR6 some years back, but just picked up a 2004 2.0L Jetta about a week ago for $300. So far, I've replaced the coolant reservoir bubble, air filter, fuel filter, fuel pump, chaged oil, changed transmission fluid/filter, AND replaced the camshaft position sensor just this afternoon. Car had been sitting for about 2 years when I bought it and drove it home, so I figured replacing some of the fuel system and a few other things would be a good idea. Anyway, EVERYTHING so far has been SUPER easy to get to, parts were very inexpensive, and total labor time is minimal. Whoever designed this car really kept the person working on it in mind. Transmission pan had a total of 4 bolts (unlike most I've done, with a TON of unnecessary ones) AND was located about 6" behind the front bumper instead of the very center of the car. Even the fuel pump has an "access panel" located just under the passengers back seat, making changing the pump out a 10 minute job instead of having to drop the fuel tank like a lot of cars. I have a total of maybe $600 in this car now and that includes the $300 I paid PLUS all of those parts I mentioned I replaced. Absolutely LOVE it and even the "mods" I'm considering doing are easy and inexpensive. Don't get me wrong...I'd LOVE to have my VR6, black on black on black, manual Jetta back, lol. But, as far as ease of working on and parts pricing, I much prefer my 2.0L.

    Hey man I have a 2003 1.8t jetta and I it has a problem that I don't even know where to begin with fixing it. It does not want to exit limp mode until I let the car fully heat up to the 190f mark. After it's fully warmed up it drives like normal. I already checked things like the MAF and the throttle body and they are working just fine. I think the boost is also working correctly too.
