So, each and every structure that you come across is supported by some kind of subsurface material. Be it a single-story residential building, a skyscraper, or a bridge, there is a need for proper transference of load to the subsurface to maintain structural stability and serviceability. In this video, I dive into the common types of foundations. Enjoy and please leave a like, comment and subsc...
The Geotechnics of the Moon
Переглядів 985 місяців тому
NASA is sending people back to the Moon in their Artemis program as early as 2026 if everything goes according to plan. This is more than 5 decades since their last manned Apollo 17 mission in 1972. This time, their target is the Lunar South Pole. By 2030, China is planning its first manned Lunar mission also to the South Pole where it plans to construct a research outpost. This means to surviv...
The Excessive Settlements of Kansai International Airport
Переглядів 2528 місяців тому
Kansai International Airport located in the Osaka Bay, Osaka, Japan has been sinking due to the consolidation of the Pleistocene clay strata. At this point, the airport island has sunk way below the initially predicted value. I dive deep into the situation and paint a picture on how the process occurs.
The Complexities of Designing Building Foundations

The complexities of designing building foundations, especially for high-rise buildings in urban areas, and the general process that engineers go through to understand the engineering geology of the subsurface and come up with foundation design solutions that are safe, economical, and sustainable.
Road Foundation Geotechnical Engineering
Переглядів 28910 місяців тому
Geotechnical engineers play a crucial role in designing the road foundation, taking into account the properties of the soil and other materials present at the site. They conduct various tests and investigations to determine the soil's bearing capacity, compaction characteristics, permeability, and other relevant parameters. Let's explore that in this video...
Soil Constitutive Models

Predicting geomaterials' failure is much less straightforward, and we don’t have one universally applicable method. Instead, we have to predict failure by selecting the most suitable one from a range of different failure theories depending on the situation. Check out how soil failure theories are developed.
Landfill Geotechnical Engineering

Nicoll Highway Collapse
Переглядів 1,9 тис.Рік тому
On 20 April 2004, a massive construction accident occurred in Singapore when a tunnel being built for the Circle Line MRT collapsed near Nicoll Highway station. The collapse was caused by the failure of a temporary retaining wall that could not withstand the stress of holding up the tunnel. Please leave a like and subscribe to the channel.

Very educative
This is a great video, keep it up!
Thanks Benjamin.
Great information! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Your channel videos are great. Unfortunately, my physics is very poor and many theories are difficult to understand. A recent incident in Malaysia, our country, caused a female tourist to fall into a deep hole as a sidewalk tile suddenly fell. Can we talk about that?
Thank you for your comment. Yes, I heard about that incident. A sinkhole opened up during tunnel construction. I will make a video about it soon once I gather more information.
Was the woman saved ?
Is it possible if you can please suggest an aspect geotechnical engineering that can be a good research sector for a masters program?
Hi Aaron. Sure. There are many research areas that you can pick from when it comes to Geotech. For now, my suggestion is that you think about what interests you the most about geotech. That will help you narrow down the path that you can take. Let me know if you wish to discuss more. I will give you my contact.
Love from Bangladesh ❤
Thanks.
You're doing a great job!!!!
Thank you so much Radwan
This is very detailed and I am not catching all of it. Something similar is happening not far from where I live. Thank you for your work!
Thank you for watching.
Interesting video, and great editing! Subbed.
Thanks for the sub Kyle!
BSCE 1970, MSCE 1981 with emphasis on Soil Mechanics. I spent 10+ years as a bridge design engineer and 10+ years as a Geotechnical engineer. Soil mechanics, rock slope engineering, building foundation design, etc., are more of an art than science (with high liability). However about 25 years ago I transitioned to become an asbestos consultant. I was a good, average designer but became a high-end asbestos consultant. Engineers are not paid in portion to the liability that they face.
I agree with you on that. Especially anything to do with underground structures. The inherent uncertainty is really high. Thanks for the comment.
Hello sir, i'm investigating relationship between particle size distribution and slope stability as my final year research project for bachelor of civil engineering, would you recommend this research topic,
Hi Gladys. Yes, I would. There is a direct correlation between particle size distribution and soil shear strength. To make it even more exciting, you can conduct some direct shear test experiments on soil samples with different particle size distributions.
I appreciate your work and effort put in to the video :)
I appreciate that!
Excellent video. Just one thing, about the deviatoric stress (q), according Atkinson (2007), q = Sigma1 - Sigma3, not (Sigma1 - Sigma3)/2 like presented in 6:08.
Thanks Elias. Great observation. That is correct, it was a mistake on my part.
Deviatoric stress can well be presenter as (sigma1-sigma3)/2. it is also accepted In this form.
Subscribed!
Thanks Rick!
Thank you for an informative session
Thank you for watching!
Great video man, cheers from Romania.
Thanks Sacro.
Thank you very much
You are welcome and thank you for watching.
I like it❤
Thank you for liking the video.
HOW CAN I CONTACT YOU ?
Hi Nana. Send me a message on Insta clemencychido.
Hi, Folks. I worked on a job in Newcastle, New South wales, Australia, in about 1989 where they used that same technique to freeze waterlogged 'running' sand in order to dig a new casting pit 13 metres deep in an aluminium smelter - worked like a dream. Just my 0.02. You all have a wonderful day. best wishes. Deas Plant.
Hi Deas. Thanks for the comment. That's great to hear. I will definitely look up that project. Interestingly, we work in a fascinating industry, but there is not much publicity about the construction world.
😍
Thanks
Great content. Thank you for teaching me so much bout Geo!
Glad you enjoyed it...
What is the strongest method for cliff erosion?
Hello! Water erosion if the top soil is not covered naturally or mechanically.
Thank you for this video. I shared it with a few friends. They were so excited.!!! You desperately need 'promo sm'!
Thank you for your support. It really means a lot to me. And thanks for sharing with your friends.
Hey, just wondering if a geotechnical engineering masters is necessary to be a geotech engineer or just civil engineering masters degree?
Hi Blake. It will be a good foundation to have a master's in Geotechnical engineering if you want to go down that path. However, you can have a master's in civil engineering and then focus more on geotechnical engineering modules. Wish you all the best and thanks for the support.
GOOD JOB
Thank you @Jssie Dai
