Portuguese Coastal Camino Day 1 2023 4K
Our first caminos I carried my Nikon 35mm but it became to heavy. Last couple of years I have been shooting the videos with my GoPro. It shoots in 4K. I’ve been shooting in wide angle but the next Camino I’m going to go to normal video to see if it stops the blurry look on the edges. Pics are almost always by iPhone.
Thanks Chris, kind of what I thought. i have a Go Pro that I haven't used since the Camino so probably will take it again. Does take great quality stuff!
@ I have a GoPro 9 which I want to upgrade next year. The new model has GPS which will help me remember where we were when I shot the video.
Another lovely day and good footage. It must have been tough as you look tired this day. By the way what camera do you use for most of the footage? For our walk I'd like to take some decent coverage but I don't want to pack too heavy. We did take a nice Christmas walk today so I am finally off the couch too! Merry Christmas to ya!
Almost enough? Your tough. I’ll have to try a little more inspirational music.
Another really classy video, just the right mix of high quality trail coverage, very well chosen comments and very evocative music. Had its usual effect on me, almost enough to get me out of the chair!
Aaahhh.... Just what i needed this Sunday morning; the cathedral of the open trail. Nice day!
Hi Chris don't apologize for McDonalds! We did the same thing whenever we got a chance, Its funny, we don't usually go to them in Canada but on the Via it sure was a welcome sight. A good burst of protein, a quick beer (for me), doughnut for her and generous business hours. What's not to like? The parking lot laundry was also well used whenever we ran across them. I recall looking quite like a hobo sitting on a curb in the parking lot eating a baguette/tuna and quaffing a beer from the Supermarche waiting for the wash cycle. Good times! Really makes us want to get out there again. Strange life!
@@kenyackimec8341 strange life but so enjoyable. Can’t wait for the next Camino.
love watching all your Caminos. Did my first one 2 years ago at age 65 and did one again this year. Want to do another in 2025. I don't know why there so addi8cting. Never thought I would be walking 100's of kilometres when I got into my 60's.
@@dwainstromquist9116 it is indeed addicting.
Ah France, just doing it's own thing! Your comments at the end kind of sum it up all right! Lovely country and nice footage though.
Rain or shine walking a Camino is better than a day at work. My opinion. Wait until the videos of what we did after the Camino! Still a month away before I get them finished.
Hanging in there!
Hi Chris, for some reason this video makes me want to really walk a Via again. I guess on a rainy day when you have miles to cover that's all you can do, put your head down and go. Beautiful country, but just like France though, starving to death on a Monday. Also always enjoy hearing your very distinctive Alberta accents. Makes me feel like I'm there with you.
Lovely. I also enjoy your choice of music. Peaceful. Thank you.
I hope to complete a video about every 3 or 4 days. This was a very nice Camino but the infrastructure is very poor.
I sent you a friend request on Facebook book. If you scroll back you will see a short video of each day. I’m now building the full videos
Hey Chris glad to run across you again. We'll definitely follow along as we have plans to walk from Reims to St Jean Pied de Port next fall to connect up our two big walks, the Camino de Santiago from 2019 and the Via Francigena in 2022/23. Keep posting as you go, it sure whet's the appetite! Fellow Albertans Ken and Terry
thank very apprciate
Thank you! I’ve just finished binge watching your two video series from Le Puy to Santiago de Compostelle. I will be attempting to walk these later this year with either the Cele Valley or Rocamadour variants. Could I ask you what backpacks you used and what you were wearing for foot wear? Wearing your poncho while doing your laundry was genius 😂
I was using the Osprey 48l and Shannon was using the Deutor 30l. I have since downsized to the Gregory 35l. I wear the Altra Paradigm runner. I really like the built in stabilizer and Shannon wears Brooks adrenaline. Blisters can be the worst so if I could suggest, check out the Armaskin socks. We have been wearing them since our first Camino and we have not had a single blister. Buen Camino
what the average you paid for the gîte ??
It has been a while since we walked the camino and I don’t remember exactly what we paid but I can say that it was 2 to 3 times what you would pay on the Camino Frances. At the same time I can say that we stayed at some incredible places that made the camino so memorable. We stayed in several homes where the owners made us supper and socialized with us. If your walking this camino I highly recommend the home of the L’Alchimiste in Navarrenx.
@@chrisduhaime5715 thank, same appreciation for me
Wonderful. My wife and i started walking this path on August 4 of 2023. And in September of 2017 we walked the Frances. Love you videos.
Always a pleasure ❤
Nice movie. Keep on !!
It's always fun to find a new (to me) vlogger! I'm looking forward to "binging" all of the posts on your Portuguese playlist because I'll be starting on May 4th. So glad you included the Spiritual Variant, too! I am wondering how the Camino arrows were on this first day out of the Porto Cathedral along the Douro River. Maybe you didn't need any arrows since you were following the river.
We scouted it out the night before we left. We started at the Cathedral and went straight to the water. If I recall correctly the arrows were pretty good. I have read since we did the camino that they have now added a new marker at the Cathedral. That might have been the only place where it was a bit confusing. Perhaps the new marker has fixed that concern. The views are fantastic along the River for days and if your doing the spiritual variant be prepared for the big climb before the Monastery. Buen Camino
That sounds perfect, Chris. Thanks for getting back to me! I sure am doing the Spiritual Variant. There are LOTS of hills around my home where I am training, so its good to know that training will be put to use. Thanks for the heads up. @@chrisduhaime5715
Just came across your videos. I’m subscribed and like the vibe. I’ve walked out of Porto 5 times, with different variations, and different seasons. I’m going back this year to walk the Invierno in May with some friends and then the French Way in July and August with our 14 year old. I’m thinking of vlogging this time around. What camera did you use?
I’ve been using the gopro 9 for the last few camino’s. I also carry the DJI mini drone. If you decide to use a gopro, I would recommend against using their cloud to store your daily clips. I used it on a previous Camino and when I got home I was unable to download a few days worth of clips. I now download daily to my iPhone and upload to the Apple cloud. I have not had any issue so far. Buen Camino
@@chrisduhaime5715 Thank you for the info.
Your videos have helped us a lot. We are walking our 6th Camino this summer. It will be on the Via Podiensis and it will be our first time walking through France. Thank you for your videos! Buen Camino!
It is a very beautiful Camino. You are going to walk into some fairytale towns. When you get to Navarrenx stay with the L’Alchemist. If you plan to stay in Saugues make sure you book that night in advance. Only one place to stay and although it has a lot of rooms it was booked solid. Enjoy. Burn Camino
We are reserving all of our rooms in advance because we have to email. I don't want to worry about it while walking. Gîte Itier-Martins what we reserved in Saugues, is that what you are referring to? I have emailed L’Alchemist, thank you for the recommendation. Please let me know if you have any other recommendations. We have noted the ones from your videos. @@chrisduhaime5715
@@CruisinwiththeColemans my mistake. It is domaine du Sauvage. The only place to stay is Gite D’etape Le Sauvage en gevaudan. It is a very nice place and the meal is required. We enjoyed it there. The Alchemist was a great night if you watched our video for that day. I have one more that was a great night but I have to look it up and see how I found it to book. As you mentioned everything was done by email because of the language barrier. You must do the mass in Le Puy. Seeing the floor open in the cathedral to allow the pilgrims to walk out onto the Camino is a great memory. Surprisingly, there is a decent climb out of Le Puy. Plan a day in Le Puy. There are a few interesting things to see like the church that is located at the top of a rock. I’ll send you the place I mentioned above. I have to search it out
We are staying at Domaine du Sauvage, already have that reservation. Thanks for following up when you find the other place. We have a day in Le Puy and we would not miss mass. ☺@@chrisduhaime5715
@@CruisinwiththeColemans the other night was in Condom. It was a place we booked on booking.com called Venez Dormir Chez Nous. It included breakfast. Run by two guys that were great. Very interesting place. Room was very nice. Large!! Shared showering in the hall. They noticed that I had an interest in the Armanac (I hope I spelled that right). A liquor made in that part of France. When we came down for breakfast they poured me a nice glass to try it. For breakfast
Hi Chris, my wife and i just happened unto your Via Podiensis videos a few minutes ago and it is really nice to hear your perfectly correct Alberta accent! We are from northern Alberta and have recently finished the Via Francigena and have done the Camino Frances in 2019. We have a desire to go from Chalon en Champagne (on the Via) to St John Pied de Port to connect up what we have already done possibly in a year or two. Part of that would be the Via Podiensis so we thought maybe we could get some advice from you and maybe in return we could talk about the Via Francigena.
Ken. Great to hear from another long distance walking couple. My wife and I love the walks through Europe. We have walked the camino Francis twice from SJPP. Once with 2 of our kids. We have walked the portuguese interior and ocean routes from Porto, the Primitivo, and the Podiensis. Completing the Via Francigena is on our list but we want to do the Via Gebennensis next year which will then take us from the west coast of Spain to Switzerland in our travels. Depending on the time of year you plan to walk the Podiensis I would strongly recommend making reservations several nights ahead until you are beyond Conques. Especially night 3 if you plan to stay in Domain du Sauvage. There is only one place to stay and we saw a lot of people having to walk another 5k to get to a bed. There are a few very beautiful towns/cities that you are going to walk into that you never expected. Like a fairytale. If I could make one recommendation. When you reach Navarrenx stay at Gite d’etape L’Alchimste. We had a great night there. He doesn’t speak a lot of English but the hospitality was fantastic and he has such an interesting home.
Hello. We booked ahead as well. We were pushing a large bag forward every day and we had to know where to send it. We did 15 km the first few days, it was enough for us. Great capture. Keep inspiring.
It s nice to see other people's views, we walked August 2022. Great captures. The first weeks were do beautiful. Keep inspiring.

Hi, glad you enjoyed that hill, it's a killer. When I walked it in 2022 I had started the day in Arcade so ended up walking 25 miles that day. I slept well that night though.
Thank you

The boat rise was v informative
Thsnks for sharing the green path, lovely
Thanks for sharing your trip We are really enjoying them. Safe travels
I used the guide book by John Brierley for the choice of Camino and the variants. You have likely seen by now that we took the spiritual variant. We enjoyed it as it added Some new elements to a Camino such as the boat ride on day 13 which will be available in a few days. We used the Brierley book and booking for all our accommodations. Before we left we had seen that beds were tight so we booked ahead. When we got there we recognized that the beds available were plentiful. The coastal route is beautiful. We truly enjoyed the Camino and look forward to our next
Thank you for putting together these videos. I have been following your journey because I would like to do this Camino Route in the future (not sure when though but definitely on the bucket list!). I like the videos because the commentary is minimal (a good thing IMO). A picture is worth a thousand words. The scenery looks fantastic (great drone work!), and I appreciate the images of the towns that you are visiting. Furthermore, it gives me a fairly good understanding of the facilities along the way and the type of footwear that is needed. If you have time, let us know what resources you used to plan the Camino, what didn't go as expected, and what advice you wish you had received before the journey. Buen Camino! Dom
I have really enjoyed your videos. Have walked the Frances and Primitivo and looking forward to the Portuguese Camino but torn between the coastal and inland routes.
If you watch the next few videos you will see we took the spiritual route which was very nice.
Great if you could provide a map overview of your walk, showing the places you stopped each day.
We are going to start doing that on our next Camino.
Looks good. Doing a day trip from Bruges in November and liking the thought of it even more. If there's any tips I'd be interested. Cheers
We did the day trip north to the coast and enjoyed that. I did a short video in our day trip to Oostend. If you have a day going south for a day to Ghent is very nice as well. Maybe 20 minutes by train. I can’t remember the exact time. We loved Belgium.
