CFC 2024 Division 5 Muzzleloader
This video was filmed on my own private shooting range and property by trained professionals for educational and entertainment purposes only, with emphasis on firearms safety and responsible gun ownership. I am NOT in the business of selling firearms or performing modifications on them. Do not attempt to copy at home anything you see in my videos. Firearms can be extremely dangerous if not used safely.
Here is my attempt at Division 5, Muzzleloader, for the 2024 Cabin Fever Challenge. I am using a .50 cal flintlock. A PA long rifle built by my Dad. Using patched round balls with 70 grains of 2F black powder.

Is it an American Chestnut?

This tree is along a power line near our home. It appears to be an American Chestnut... but I'm no expert. Please put your thoughtful insights in the comments below.

Black powder shooting has always interested me, but I haven't got into it yet (other than an 1854 Repro BP Revolver). Thanks for the good detailed info along with the shooting
Is that a Pineland flag, I see?
Absolutely! I was hoping someone would notice 👍
Awesome video! Love the whole process of loading and shooting. Im looking to get into muzzleloaders soon. May I ask, what camera you used and how you did those transitions in the recording? Thanks!
Thanks! The non-shooting videos were done with my iPhone. The other videos were shot with an Insta360 X2 (they have an X3 out, now). The 360 camera captures video in a full sphere but the software allows you to narrow the field down to what you want folks to see. Another cool thing is, you can actually publish the full 360 video to UA-cam and viewers can scroll around "inside" the video, looking at any aspect they wish. The "cross blur" transitions are part of the iMovie software. While I have the more sophisticated suite of video tools, iMovie really does a great job for most of the things I do.
@davidhartley8820 Nice!!! I'm going to look into that 360 camera, what a great way to show the whole shooting positions for CFC! Appreciate you!
Very good run with a flinter. Your Dad did a nice job on the rifle, it's nice and slim. Most folks leave too much wood on the stocks.
Thank you! It is motivating me to build flintlocks for our sons.
What a beautiful rifle! The craftsmanship is amazing, as seen on my screen. I don't see any of the traditional barrel to stock fasteners, just a smooth blemish free stock. And its massive! Thank you for the great video.
Thank you. I wanted a frontiersman’s rifle, not a show piece. The steel is all browned vs. blued. From what I understand most of the examples that we have are from the well to do who didn’t use their guns for their livelihood. Those mantle pieces are gorgeous and true works of art. I’m not a fancy person. I was enlisted in the U.S. Army so I wanted a gun in the style of someone just like me, budget, utilitarian, functional, hard working. I’m really glad you enjoyed it 👍
You make Canada's national uniform look way better than I do!
Looks like American timber form and the bark is right for a trunk that size. The leaves look close to American, although they can vary in shape a bit from tree to tree and even on the same tree. It’s hard to tell from the lighting but if the top side of the leaves was glossy at all, chances are it’s a Chinese-American hybrid. The way the leaves fold upwards in on themselves points to having some Asian genetics.
Looks like an epic trip. I hope to do it someday as well.
Both the C&O and the GAP are gifts to the public. Well worth the time and effort. The C&O is pretty "rustic" near Cumberland but becomes more refined the closer to D.C. you get. Have a great ride!
A superb job of documenting your ride. It will help me immensely this summer. When are you all going to document the rest of the trails in America? Lol
Beautiful, and a job well done. Congratulations.
Looking a little bouncy on the way into Harper's Ferry. :-)
Somebody replaced the mud and dirt with a much larger grade of substrate :-) I was told that the trail would incrementally improve, after Day 1, and it did. The closer we got to D.C. the better maintained it became, the wider it became, and the materials used on the trail improved.
They say PA has crummy roads but great bike trails. Maryland on the other hand...but the locks and lock houses are pretty slick, aren't they? I can't wait for the last two days!
How about that Viaduct over 219 in Meyersdale? GAP mile 0. Cool.
Another busy Sunday in Ohiopyle. I hope you stopped for ice cream!
This day, and the first day on the C&O taught us a lot about "refueling." The speed we were going (13-14 mph), we burnt through breakfast in about 20 miles and needed a meal (sandwich, something more than a Cliff bar and energy gel).
I love your Relive video. Cool idea. Is that a little water I see on the trail?
We got hammered by these "pop-corn" rain showers. They dumped buckets of rain in a localized area. On hit at Homestead and was finished before we crossed the river at McKeesport. The last one hit about 1/2 mile from the Yough Twister. Pulled in there, had an ice cream cone, gone. Finished riding to West Newton. For two Army guys, being stuck in the rain, we just put our heads down, rode through it, and laughed (could be worse).
