Stripping and Melting Copper from an Electrical Extension Cord
Using my new wire stripper to remove the copper from an old extension cord. Then melting down the copper wire and pouring into small homemade molds. Pouring the excess into a larger mold I bought.

Aluminum Bronze Ant-bed Explosion
Переглядів 6545 років тому
I wanted to try and cast an ant bed in aluminum bronze. I have never seen one done in aluminum bronze, so I was going to give it a try. It had rain early this week, but not much. I thought the ground was dry enough, but I was wrong. This is why when you are working with almost two thousand degrees molten metal you should always wear your PPE. I’ve done lots of ant bed in aluminum and I only had...

    WOW.... Thats a real nice piece of equipment I didnt even hear that lid drag at all. I really want to know how you got that inside lining so perfect. looks like its was some kind of cement mix and you made a mold or something

    • @dalemiller9444
      @dalemiller9444 2 роки тому

      Thanks, the liner is 3000 degree refractory. It looks and feels like concrete but it can withstand 3000 degrees f. I used a 5 gallon to get the inside form. Works great, I can melt copper, brass and iron with no problem.

    Without a doubt, the best laid out and executed design of any waste oil furnace/forge/smelter on UA-cam. The real clincher though has to be the homemade outriggers at all four wheels.

    • @dalemiller9444
      @dalemiller9444 3 роки тому

      Brass seems to be more durable, copper takes more heat. Copper melts at 1983 degrees, brass is 1710 degrees and aluminum takes less heat to melt at 1220 degrees. Aluminum is also easier to pour.

    Appreciate showing the work this is incredible, as I was wondering how Solid gold, silver, and copper eggs could be made. I am curious about something else, just as metal egg was made from the actual shell of a real egg, do you know of a way to make a solid egg shell, made of metal, preferably one that opens like children's Easter egg toys, maybe it screws together(each half of the egg shell), main point is surface should be smooth and polished, without any abrasion.

    • @michaelwesleyii5079
      @michaelwesleyii5079 4 роки тому

      Sizing of the Metal egg shell has to be perfect, because I want to fit an inside of the metal egg, so the egg should be secured tightly on the inside of the metal egg shell. Appreciate your feed back.

    Definitely consider getting a barrel in which you can soak the casts in overnight before hitting it with the power washer. If you can rig up a recirculating pump like a parts washer you can reduce the power washer time to just the final detail and keep from turning part of your yard into a mud hole.

      That sucks ,I saw fire ants first hand in shreveport Louisiana and I was amazed at how fast they could rebuild . And yes I was told to leave the piles alone but used a stick to push it over and man they stormed out fast and rebuilt it all by the next day . Here in upstate NY we are going to get 5-8” of snow . No regular ants for 6 months now. Thanks for the response,keep up with the art and help controlling the population.

    While I've always seen these castings from anthills displayed with the mouth of the anthill as the base of the finished artwork, I've wondered how intriguing it might be to add some channel strut to the mouth before the aluminum hardens and displaying it as a suspended work, mimicking how it REALLY was...
