Welcome to RGF! (An Introduction - Part One)
neat! i wonder how they'll hold up over time. they look fragile.
They’re really cool! They’ve got the feel of metal dice but without the weight. I also always roll them on a leather dice tray so they won’t damage my table or get dinged up. 😁
This is the best edition of D&D. Nuff said!
Agreed!
great stuff!!!!
Thank you for watching!
I started with this in 1980! I'm still playing now!
It’s such an amazing setting! I’m still using it in my own games as well. 😁
Great! Sounds like a fun and detailed location. Thanks for making a video about it. I always enjoy finding out about planar adventures/settings.
Thanks! It’s a really cool place. Hope you enjoy.
I love Mystara & find my campaigns always play better in the well developed setting, as opposed to forgotten realms and my home brew adventures. Maybe it's because I'm not a great writer or there was an underlying bias, but I only rediscovered Mystara 2 years ago and the difference has been revolutionary. Glad to be back in it & Never looking back from here. Great video series, I am loving the deep of content you are covering, it is a great bridge of details that are not fully covered by others who are doing the Gazetteer series but works well with their stuff as well to give a great full picture. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so very much! I have always felt, as you do, that the well developed setting made my job as a DM easier. It is such a thoroughly designed world and I love it. Thanks for helping me tell others how great it is.
Looking forward to listening to this many times. Thanks for all the hard work. BECMI Forever! Long Live King Elmore!!
Thank you for watching and your kind words. Love your enthusiasm! I still feel that this world and rules were amazing and special.
Just wanted to add the list of spells that the Witches mentioned in the video have access to. Witches were listed as NPC's but I assume they progressed as Magic Users. I'm not sure why these listed spells are sometimes of a different level than the ones in the rulebooks. 1st Level - Detect Evil, Detect Magic, Light (and Darkness), Protection from Evil, Interpret Runes (from player's book) 2nd Level - Ventriloquism, Charm Animal, Detect Invisible, E.S.P., Remove Curse (and Curse) 3rd Level- Charm Person, Clairvoyance, Fly, Phantasmal Force, Sleep 4th Level- Charm Monster, Dispel Magic, Locate Object, Polymorph Self 5th Level- Magic Jar, Polymorph Others, Massmorph, Pass Wall 6th Level- Anti-Magic Shell, Conjure Elemental, Death Spell, Word of Recall
I think it was easier for the writers to not be too strict on making sure an NPC would level the same as a PC. Either that or they just made an honest mistake that wasn't caught in editing.
Are any more videos on Mystara incoming?
Yes! I certainly do apologize for the lack of content lately. My family and I have had a very busy summer this year and I haven’t had a lot of time.😢 I do have 2 videos in the works and hope to get one up next week. Thank you for asking. It’s nice to know people enjoy my work.
@@raisegamefully No problem, we all have life things to do. :)
Is there any sourcebook where I can check the differences between 1000 AC and 1020 AC? I've seen somewhere that Alfheim was invaded by shadowelves and is now called Aengmor, is there a summary of these events anywhere, like a timeline?
The history was compiled from several sources over the years. The simplest way to find out may be on Pandius.com -the Mystara website. Back in the day, the future past 1000AC was detailed in books called The Poor Wizard’s Almanacs (great reads, btw). And yes, Alfheim was conquered by the Shadow Elves who renamed it after a city from their own history.
I just found your channel because i'm reading the Threshold Magazine. Issue 34
Thanks for checking it out! So glad people are still into Mystara. It’s an amazing setting with a great fan base.
Yep, me too. I just finished reading the story. Was also delighted to find a fellow user of Dream by Wombo. I'd like to check out your other stuff if you have any?
Thank you so much! This is my first published story and as you know it’s just part one of the story. I hope there’s enough interest to keep it going. I decided to go with Dream because it made nice black and whites, which I felt was true to the original Gazetteer series.
I loved the gazeteer seires, very happy I found your channel
Thanks for watching! They are so well done I wanted to share them with everyone, especially newer players.
I also avoided this supplement because the cover didn't wow me. Your video made realize how much I was missing out
Thank you! I too was surprised at this one. It had some really great stuff.
There's also the style of d4 where the numbers are placed in the corners of the polyhedron. This is done by cutting the edge and giving it enough surface to place the number. But I believe is a newer style.
Oh wow! Even newer styles I’ve never heard of. Thank you!
@@raisegamefully As far as I`m aware a lot of DCC dice sets come with these d4s I mentioned.
I now only purchase dice that have this style of d4. I cannot stand the old "caltrop" style of d4s anymore. Roll4initiative is the company who makes a lot of them, not sure if anyone else is making them. ::edit:: Just checked the DCC dice mentioned, this is actually different than the Arched d4's that roll4initiative makes. Theirs are more similar to a rectangle with 2 rounded sides.
Apparently there’s a lot more styles of d4’s than I realized! Thanks for the info! So great to learn about these.
You and the BECMI Berserker do the best videos on Mystara. Very comprehensive and entertaining.
Thanks so much! It’s nice to know that so many others share my love for this setting. And I agree-Berserker is great!
Fantastic analysis!!
Thank you very much!
Sometimes I wish they wouldn't have named the Known World, took all the Mystara out of it. 😂
Right? 😄 It was an evolution. The setting expanded a lot over the years but I remember The Known World fondly!
I produce the Welcome to Mystara channel and I'm putting together a compilation video for the D&D 50th anniversary. Was hoping you would want to participate. Right now recruiting people for the project.
That sounds amazing! I believe you have my email if you want to send me the details! 😁
@@raisegamefully I'll have to find it. ill let you know if I need a reminder
Might I suggest a future study of race types existing in Mystara. It could compare them to other settings. What brought that idea on was your mention of a half-elf child at 34:00, the explanation could have gone deeper to clarify the reason for the shunning. Mystara has no half races. The child takes after one of the two parents and its racial characteristics. Mystara never had viable interbreeding of species. That being said, there is a treat in the Savage Coasts region.
Very true about the half breeds. I was referring to the general xenophobia the elves tend towards. This would naturally extend to a half human child but that would depend on an individual campaign and the DM. Interesting idea about a race episode. And yes…. Savage Coast 😉
Congratulations on the subscriber milestone. If more people see your channel and the quality of content you provide, I am confident that subscriber numbers will continue to grow. Cheers!
Thank you so much! That means a lot. I do love these products and I’m excited to show people how cool they were.
The Gazetters are still a source of inspiration for my campaign world based on Maystara. But as mentioned at 16:38 , I changed a lot of things and adapted them to our game. With this principle I have basically grown into D&D and cannot understand some of today's discussions when rules and background descriptions are perceived as seemingly unchangeable. In any case, thank you very much for the great summary, it immediately made me want to read through the book again.
Thank you for watching and the kind words. I’ve always agreed with the principle you referenced and I agree about the rules arguments. This material is too amazing to be forgotten and it’s great when I hear from others who feel the same way!
This is great reflection...I was there
Thank you! So many of us loved it. It’s such a great setting!
Mystara lore videos in 2023? Incredible. Thank you Jim.
I’ve got to help keep it alive. It was such a great setting. Thank you for your kind words!
Ed Greenwood wrote a lot of the fluff and Forgotten Realms without much surprise has a lot of references to the Five Shires and there is a lot of implication most halflings in that setting may have come from there.
I’m not surprised. Ed is a prolific genius. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for making this video, I always thought Greyhawk is the original DnD setting
Greyhawk was older. It was Gary Gygax’s world for 1st edition AD&D. Mystara evolved into the game world for basic D&D throughout the late 1970’s and 1980’s. It was the world I played with the most and I fell in love with it. Thanks for watching!
I have been waiting til I had time to watch this in full and I was not disappointed. Great work Jim, a great dive into what makes Darokin a great land to adventure in. Can't wait for a trip to whatever land you plan to explore next!
Thank you very much! I’ve always felt D&D in general (and Mystara in particular) was something immersive - a place you could lose yourself in. It sounds like you feel the same way. I’m glad I’m able share this with everyone.
Outstanding video, love this series! Big fan of the gazetteers. Ty RGF!
Thank you so much!
Hooray!!!! Can't wait to watch!!!!
To @stefanopadovan1394..... Sorry this took so long!
Seeing this video from Raise Game Fully now I'm totally going to order a set of dice! @foambraingames
They are really cool!
Amazing video - there is a massive online community still supporting Mystara they publish a fan magazine and the first issue was published in 2013 0- the magazine's name? Threshold!!! It publishes community member based on Karameikos and extends GAZ1 content too.
I just found about Threshold magazine a few weeks ago. Super cool. I’m just discovering the Mystara community as well. So glad to see it hasn’t been forgotten. Thank you for watching and your kind words!
Basic D&D (Red Box), is what I cut my teeth on. It was a lot of fun.
So cool, right? It changed my life. Thanks for watching!
We used THAC0 the same as freddaniel. Roll a d20 and add bonuses / subtract penalties. Then subtract the modified result from your THAC0 to get the best AC that you hit. So, let's say I have a THAC0 of 18, a Strength modifier of +2, and I roll a 15 on my d20. My modified roll is: 15 + 2 = 17. My best armor class hit is: 18 - 17 = 1(and 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.).
That’s really cool. It’s so amazing how this game can played in slightly different ways.
I miss the old system, thank you for showing it to the newer generations of gamers
Thanks for your thanks! I feel that there’s so much good stuff from years ago that shouldn’t be forgotten. 😊
I have two of the 2e intro boxes for this setting - one for Karameikos and one for Glantri. Love them both.
Two of my favorites! They’re fantastic
I actually use THAC0 minus the die 20 rolled and announce "I hit this AC or higher. Example THAC0 18 and a roll of 9 (18 - 9 = 9) so I hit AC 9, 10, etc. With the same THACO 18 and a die roll of 15 (18 -15 = 3) I would hit AC 3, 4, 5, and higher. This method has the advantage of not needing to know the target's AC in advance. THAC0 gives us so many ways to handle the combat "to hit" roll.
Interesting. Yes, it’s amazing how many ways the math works. Does your DM then apply bonuses and penalties behind the scenes? Do you feel that combat takes less time this way?
This is cool, I’m glad I’ve randomly stumbled across this channel, I’ve been looking for a BECMI play session online
Thanks so much. I talk about lots of stuff but BECMI and Mystara are my favorites. Our play sessions are 2e AD&D Planescape with random things thrown in. I’d love to join/run a BECMI online game but I’m not sure I have the time. Let me know if you find one though. 🎲
I'm excited for this content!!!
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoy it all.
I was so excited to publish our first game session in over a year, I let a spelling mistake get past me in the opening story. So embarrassing.😢
Congratulations on reaching 200 subs! heres to many 100s more!
Thank you so much! It really means a lot to me that people in this hobby are so supportive. It’s great that there are people out there who enjoy hearing me talk about the parts of D&D that made me fall in love with the game.
Great series! Keep `em coming!
Thank you so much!
I love the red D&D t shirt
I love this. The session reminds of when I started playing ad&d
Thanks so much! I’m all about showing older parts of the game to newer players. In this case it’s my sons and their friends. Just wanted to show everybody how simple and fun the game can be. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
This has always been one of my favorite gazatteers. The Hin have always been a fun race to play. Over all a decent introduction given how much info is packed into this. Would have liked to hear more details in some areas, but that is just my preference.
Thanks for watching! I always wished I could’ve used this material more. Back in the day, our campaigns didn’t feature Hin very much and I didn’t explore this material until much later on. It’s a shame because the Gazetteer is so well done. Thank you also for your feedback. I struggle between describing all the material and keeping the videos short and to the point.
Love this content: we bought some of these books back in the day with my group... can't wait to watch the Darokin episode: one of my characters was a merchant dwarf... :)
Thanks so much! There’s a vibe to these products and this world that just captivates me. I love that you played a campaign here! Darokin is coming soon!
@@raisegamefully Actually we played many campaigns in Mystara and in one of those I was the DM. Beign myself from Italy, did you know they translated some of the gazzetteers (I think 1 through 5 ) in Italian too? Also, at the time, without Amazon, it was really tough to find them, once I remember travelling for 80/90 miles just to find a comics shop in another nearby city to buy some material... Just a note: I don't remember in what video you mentioned it but the rules cyclopedia did not contain the Immortal rules set. I had to buy it separately. Keep up this good job you are doing:feels like being young again 🙂
Wow! I had no idea the products were translated into Italian. That’s really cool. And I can’t believe you drove so far for some products. That’s great. I would definitely do the same thing! Didn’t know that info about the immortal rules but I’m not surprised. I don’t think those modules were big sellers. I love them though! Glad that the videos are helping you feel young. The game has always done that for me.
@@raisegamefully ...who spoke about driving so far... at the time I was young and did not have the driving license so me and a friend took the train... 😂😂😂
This really feels like a hangover from the time Halflings were considered a core race. I don't remember more than a handful of Halflings in any D&D product since, mostly bartenders. 2nd edition came out right around this time and it felt like Halflings were shoved back in cupboard from that point on.
I agree. I never played one myself but I always felt they were a great part of D&D.
To fix the Thief I just gave them a 5% boost to the Thief Abilities
The Merchant Prince Class was fun to play
I did it once myself. Very cool. Lots of book keeping 🤣
I was sorting through my CDs the other day and came across my copy of the Red Steel soundtrack 🤣
