Most people have a religious, soulful gospel about god, But I have Buddy Wakefield. He is everything a human being is, Rough edges Stories, Experience Love. I always give thanks for this marvelous being for being born. For enduring the gift of someone else's hate. Beautifully tragic like all of us. I love you buddy Thank you for being my ball and chain on gloomy days when I wanna slit my wrists for being trans Or in the lady body. You've taught me to tough it out and that sometimes humor is the best advantage thru this life. Thank you and this is a vaguely plagiarized poem for you thanks for being You 💕

"You absorb." I dont know why but the way she said that line really got to me. This was an amazing piece and the way she performed it was beautiful.

I listen to this when my anger rises to levels I can no longer manage. You're so right, it clears the rage and let's me deal.

What the hell was that finger clicking crap the audience were doing. It was sooo off putting.

It's an audience feedback mechanism to show support - I don't much care for it, I've been to a few poetry slams and it's distracting, at best. I think clapping and whooping at the end are fine and the right way to do it. Snapping fingers during someone's poetry performance, to me, is off-putting and invasive. That said, it is what it is.

As a spoken word artist myself, I can assure you: clicking really helps the performer. I'm not sure if it applies to someone of Buddy's stature, but almost every amateur or semi-professional spoken word artist I have spoken to agrees. Being on stage performing words about your most vulnerable thoughts to rooms filled mostly with people you've never met before is frightening. And not in a public speaking nerves kind of way (although it's that too), but in the sense of never knowing if what you are saying means anything to anyone other than yourself. Am I wasting people's time? Do they care? And then suddenly a few people click at something you said. And then a few lines later a whole lot more click. And it's incredibly empowering and really gives you confidence. And audiences will almost always applaud at the end of your piece, so sometimes it's not a good barometer of how well-received your words were. I've been doing it for nearly five years now, to the point where I hardly hear the clicks anymore. However, I immediately notice when I'm performing to an audience that aren't regular attendees of spoken word poetry. Situations such as a writers festival rather than a monthly poetry slam - perhaps the audience won't click as much. And it is a little awkward at first, not having that feedback. It takes a while to adjust. Think of it much like laughing during a stand-up comedian's set. It's real-time feedback for the artist. If you didn't laugh, the comedian would assume noone is enjoying their show.

I know you read the comments. A dear friend of mine gave me an autographed first edition of Stunt Water. It's truly one of my favorite gifts. Then I lost it in rehab along with an amazing soft blanket. I know they're exactly where they need to be. I'm coming to see you in New York with that same friend. I need to give you a hug just a little bit too long. I don't know how else to express what it means to have my heart put into words. I'm jealous of your particular brand honesty. If nothing else thank you for highlighting the important parts.
