Nick Martin - Combat Ready Fire Training
United States
Приєднався 1 лип 2006
I am presently Chief of Operations for a fire department in North Carolina. Previously I served as the Chief of Training for the City of Columbia, South Carolina and as a Lieutenant with the District of Columbia Fire Department. My career began in 1994 in my hometown of Swarthmore, PA. Since then I have been privileged to be surrounded by great, motivated firefighters who have taught me everything I know. My passion is for firefighting excellence, driven by our uncompromisable responsibility for service to our citizens.
Since 2010 I have been privileged to present at FDIC as a classroom presenter and hands-on instructor. Since 2004 I have had the opportunity to travel the country and share thoughts, learn from others, and see many different ways of firefighting.
My goal is to pass on what was passed to me with the hopes that I can improve the skill and experiences of other firefighters. I am proud and honored to help organize this team of motivated, passionate firefighters.

HOW TO USE A TACTICAL WORKSHEET TO ORGANIZE THE FIREGROUND
A good incident commander must track the location and assignment of companies at all times during the incident. We do this by using a command board or "tactical worksheet."
In this video I give a high level overview on how to use the command boards offered by CRF. I'll utilize a structure fire example to show how I would divide and organize the incident and how I would track it on our command board.

Rescuing a victim from a fire is not a one-firefighter operation. ⚠️🔥 From the hose line protecting the search, to the incident commander organizing the fire ground, to the guy turning on the fire hydrant, and every position in between - to ensure the highest likelihood of a safe and effective rescue, the entire fireground must be firing on all cylinders. 👉🏼 Like it takes a whole village to rai...

I have been torn about whether or what to post about this tragedy. But I think it is important to acknowledge the sadness and selflessness that has come of it, and that those who are not here see real images of what is happening. Our members have been deployed since last Saturday to the mountains of North Carolina, about 90 minutes to our west. While we were spared from this storm - many were n...
CHIEFS - Start tracking your companies immediately. ✍🏻🔥

⚠️ One of the most significant issues I often see is that the incident commander does not begin tracking their companies on a command board early enough in the incident. Awesome tool! I would love to see how you break down large commercial building fires utilizing command board.
The SOG style of fire ground operations management is very beneficial for the purposes that you iterated. However in our fire district we may have up to 5 to 8 mutual aid partners assisting with water shuttle and fire attack operations. We each have may have different SOGs. Some are SOG driven some are not. In this case we're pretty much bound to the IC driven fire ground command model because of these inconsistencies between our mutual aid partners and our own agency. Your thoughts?
Have you tried wearing the box light under the scba straps? Im sure your light has a quick release buckle to remove it if neccessary. The reason I wear my light under the scba is so in case I need to perform a quick release manuever with the scba the light remains on my body. Works for me. To each his own. I do like the tips with the camera. Im going to try it out for a while. Thanks.
Thanks for this Chief. We are transitioning from an SUV to a pickup, and this tour was very helpful.
Curious why there wasn't a hoseline to side Charlie for fire attack?
Treat every call like it’s the real deal. Practice makes perfect! Also, what FD truck 1 logo is that in the background? I want one!😂😂
Hey Nick assuming this is go pro footage what mount are you using?
This.
Love the content. New Subscriber here. Lots to learn as a young Captain. Looking forward to more.
Chief I would love to see an apparatus placement layout on this fire.
Great Video Chief Love The Spread Of Knowledge Regarding This Topic Whould Love To See A Bunker Gear Carry Break Down Or A Pocket Dump Video Stay Safe
Did you get a 2.5 to the Charlie to quick hit that deck?
Are the pass alarms going off at the beginning a combat tactic to scare the fire out?
Each Officer, FF & Chauffeur position should be wearing a personal telemetry device to monitor their well being as well as conduct PAR’s etc without tying up the radio.
Amen sir
Jy praat deur jou hol man.
Hey chief, curious how you have your gopro mounted to your coat. Looks like it's probably on your mic loop? What case are you using? Thanks!
do you guys follow the blue card command by any chance
First
Chief, strong work to all. All too well reminding of Ike. Be careful and stay safe.
360 for the Truck member…4 L’s - Life hazard (immediate rescue) - Location of the fire - Ladder (ground or aerial) - Landmark (for reference when on roof so the hole go’s in the right spot)
Great video . A video about some victim search and drag tehniques , would be great
Nick, Jake and Frank, this was great right up my alley in a rural department. Trying to change old mindsets is the biggest challenge right now to overcome. Again Great show.
Great stuff as always.. What command board do you use and do you have a video on it? Thanks!
Chief, practice, practice, practice. I can’t agree with you more. When my county FMO brings out our command trailer, we go into full incident management, including tracking who’s on scene. You are very correct, it is difficult to catch up on who’s on scene, etc, but we have no choice . We carry boards like yours in our FMO trucks and the new full time district chiefs are starting to do this.
I’ve found using a radio sway strap and clipping in to the pack clip on the front of the shoulder strap is the perfect length to pan and not drag the floor. I can see where having the tic ride behind u could have certain advantages. Only thing I might push back on is clipping in with a beaner. They’re a huge entanglement hazard. Thanks for passing along the tips Nick!
Does the rural dept that Jake runs with have riding assignments?
No we do not!
Bought my own K-2 FLIR. I love it , I hook it on my right strap just above the Pass/Air Pressure Gauge.
I was introduced to Nick from my current Lieutenant (also named Nick) who is preparing me for the "final phase" of my career, and for promotion in the next year or so. This is what I hope to be able to build. (Tho I do want some recliner time... I'm in my 50's!)
Would be great if you could do a video on the camera and some tips
Would be interested to hear what you carry in your gear as a chief officer during the buggy tour.
Can’t wait for the buggy tour. I see you went with ghosted graphics, how do you like that compared to a fully marked unit.
Chief, I know I don’t perform interior suppression activities anymore, but I still get some great tips from watching your videos. If you haven’t recorded a final, comprehensive, video of the buggy, I really look forward to seeing it. Is your box light alone that is sold from an equipment company, or a basic one from Walmart, etc? I always bought mine from the sporting section. Thank you sir.
Ha ha I remember the days of buying an old light at the sporting good store and putting the giant battery in it. This was from advanced lighting, which I understand is out of business, but hopefully making a come back.
@@nmartin33 I definitely aged myself. Thank you sir for the update. I’ll look for the company. Keep up the good work.
Good stuff Chief
180 is an excuse
Yea no. Ventilation makes the fire spread if done too soon
At the risk of a civilian Monday morning quarterbacking an expert in the firefighting profession there a few things that confused me or I thought was inconsistent with your other videos. First, the bring the ax don't bring the ax debate. If you are unlikely to need the ax than that is a debate. But in this fire someone had already broken a pane of glass and determined that it was a double lock door so the need for an ax was already known, not having an ax wasn't bad luck it was failure to anticipate needs or a failure to communicate. Second, why are you opening egresses from the interior? The firefighter who broke the window and realized it was double keyed should have finished the job, instead of leaving his brothers and sisters inside without an egress You are probably thinking my criticism is overly harsh. It was an easy door. Any firefighter with lick of skill can open any door in under 20 seconds even without an ax, did you see how quickly we got through it? And you are right. And you were right on every other fire you have been on. It will probably work on the next fire too and the one after that. Might work fine for five, ten, twenty , thirty years... Then on one bread and butter room and contents fire gone sideways and you will encounter a door that is ten times harder to open than it looks. And there will only be 19 seconds between the time the IC commander orders an evacuation and the roof collapsing. And then you will be back at the station crying your eyes out, "how did this happen to me?" Also having a house with a door like that and many friends who do as well. Everybody has a key hanging from a hook near the door. (we all realize those locks are fire trap waiting to happen) Not visible from outside nor close enough to grab with a bent coat hanger, but one that is visible and easily accessible when standing in front of the door to go out. So if you are in that situation (which I don't think you should be) take a quick scan after trying the door handle and before smashing anything. It is highly probable I am missing something. You are the professional and I am just a bystander. But my gut reaction is these guys are putting themselves in unnecessary risk by doing force-able entry from the interior rather than the exterior.
I just asked for a nuke. Was I right or wrong, and when will "command" get back to me?
25 minutes in…I hear the same thing “We’re the best truck company.” “You need the mindset.” “Train like you’re going to a fire.” All that is important but I just heard it 15 times. Let’s talk tactics and training and how to do it.
excellently done. great work Chief!
That’s so precise and true. No one made you want to do this job, this is what YOU want. When I show up to a shift, I think I’m going to a fire. When I’m at home I’m learning, and reading how I can become more efficient at my job.
BUT, think about how much easier it is to get help IF you brought an ice cream truck. 😅
I really appreciate what you do. Thank you so much. You're truly amazing.
I WOULD PARTY WITH CHIEF ! 🇺🇸
My cop buddy used to have a turnout kit in his trunk. He's since made it to detective!
I thank you for sharing this. I am going to use this sequence next time donning. I been working in fire service more than w decades and I put my hood on after I Don facepiece after fishing for my hood during probationary year. I have had many fires first due so I am proficient at doing it Mt unique way. However, I know it isn't what is taught. The way seen by you today is the fix. I keep it up until ready to don face piecethen pull up but now easy to fetch and place helmet etc. This is why networking and dialogue helps you answer problems by seeing in entirely different landscape.
I really appreciate what you do. Thank you so much. You're truly amazing.
Good advice every second counts if it makes you faster gearing up it's worth practicing thank you for the tip
“Success is a lousy teacher.”
This is Spot On! Good one Chief Nick Martin!! Chief Hughes Battalion 1 (ret) Chicago FD
Normalization of deviance. Awesome message. Great class
I always say, "Better to be looking at 'em than looking for 'em!" No fire is going to be the same, even if it is in the same neighborhood with the same construction. Falling into that complacent mindset gets people killed. Canceling companies responding in on your alarm assignment is no big deal when compared to calling for them when it is too late. Well said, Nick.
💯
