Hyundai Veloster - Fix clicking steering wheel
Переглядів 119 тис.4 роки тому
I show how to fix the clicking steering wheel by replacing the steering coupler. This is a common problem with Hyundai/Kia vehicles and a fix that is not difficult. The coupler can be purchased from a variety of places online for about $5. I bought mine on Amazon and it was called a 'APDTY 112837 Flexible Steering Coupler'.
Such a great video and instructions. Tried this today and everything went well UNTIL the 14 mm bolt. Super awkward position and need the right tools. I put everything back together and will have to have someone else do this.$$$ the dealer wants 500$. Really appreciate this instruction though. Thank you!
What's the name of the part? You replaced it
@@JuanGarcia-kg8bc 'APDTY 112837 Flexible Steering Coupler'.
When I started watching this video I was hoping it would be easier than replacing the tie rod end. Now I wish it was the tie rod end. Thanks for the video!
Done, very easy after watching this video, thanks and hello from Poland
@@radoslawkaklin3295 I’m glad it worked for you and saved you money!
Thank you for this video. I was wondering what year your veloster is because mine is a 2012 and I have a key fob not a regular key?
@@mitchelljohnson7739 Mine was a 2012, I got it when they first came out.
Nice video. Except that you elegantly dismissed that its almost impossible to put the 14 mm screw back. Shit.
🤣 To be fair, when I did it, it just went in without too much issue.
Great video!! I am going to have to pay to have this done but I'm so happy to know why my steering wheel was clicking.
The piece u took off what is it called
I think you’re referring to the shell.
Thanks so much for the tutorial. I accidentally pulled off my steering wheel while installing back on. My steering is slightly left while driving now. Any suggestions? Anyone?. Thanks
I’m not sure, but maybe try taking it apart and lining it back up so it’s straight might help.
Thanks , I'll try that.
Excellent step-by-step! Thank you!
what is that part called and what is the function? not the cheap rubber coupler. The large metal cylinder that looks like a motor/actuator of some sort
Gracias por el video, lo necesitaba Like + sub
Riassembling it is not really easy!
Hey guys I did all this and now my car steering is hard and thers a sign EPS on the dash.. Did anyone find this problem?
Hello there. So i had to work on this myself. I was able to change the coupler and everything but now I ended up with another problem. My steering wheel ended up being turned to the left 90 degrees when I was putting every back together. What did I do?? How do I fix this? Thank you for the help
Take it back apart and put it back together. Perhaps use a marker to mark things this time to ensure it’s on correctly. It seems when you were putting it back on you put it on 90 degrees off.
How long did the original last? What a bad design. It will just go bad again later on. I wouldn't buy a kia or hyundai.
It's not a 14 it's a 12
Todo un profesional gracias amigo me sirvio de mucho saludos desde mexico tijuana.
Exelente amigo muy bien explicado sin duda.
Man... I would really appreciate it if you could heart this comment and reply. I have a 12tb drive FILLED with rare stuff and I just ran to grab a ringing phone and the cord caught my leg.. the drive is spinning fine, but the input jack (the jack on the drive case where the USB cable plugs in) - how much trouble am I in in trying to either get that part replaced or at least getting my stuff off of the drive. It's just the jack on the drive case - I imagine the stuff is all undamaged on the drive (fingers crossed) ...as long as that stuff still exists I won't panic quite yet.
Every Hyundai from about 2011 suffers from this problem. Fix itand it comes right back again.
Bad design.
I have a 2013 Veloster. The steering wheel on it is slanted to the left on there is a delay in the steering (as in when I turn left I have to turn it farther then I should before it the car turns). I've also noticed that occasionally (usually when I fully rotate the wheel) there is a loud pop which seems to be coming for the the steering as all my suspension looks great. Do you think it could have anything to do with this issue? I was planning to pull out the steering column this weekend to inspect everything.
Could be. You certainly have the right model for this issue and if it’s never been replaced, it’s likely shredded like you saw in the video.
Thank you for a great tutorial. You made it look so easy. I can’t believe I just finished it. It took me a couple of hours.
Thanks mate, really helpful
Thanks so much. I sent this video to my mechanic ❤
Just did this and had one wire to the power steering module break. Got a new connector off a junkyard car and spliced it together but the power steering is still out. Everything else is plugged in properly and there’s no breaks anywhere else. Any idea what may be wrong? Does the computer need a reset?
Unknown but if you’ve verified all of the connections are good then you might need to pass this over to a professional. Sometimes things happen out of our control and we need an expert.
I have the same car with the same problem. I don’t want to do this.
Damn it I don't want to do this... 5$ part ugh.
Really! Today I fixed same issue & I followed up your pin points instructions. And I got great success. In your post you covered everything. This is called real help to the society. What I faced difficulties I explain. Take out 14 mm bolt and also locate. Coupler drum with T30 screws. T30 screw removal. Sunex 9726 Mini Ratchet and Bit Set, 1/8-Inch - 1/4-Inch S2 Bits, 5/64-Inch - 1/4-Inch hex bits, 38-Piece Silver. This will help lot who want to work for the same issue. Once again thank you so much & Marry Christmas to you & your family.
Coupler I bought from Hyundai agency for $1.97 with tax
I’m glad the video was helpful. Thank you for the kind comment.
Merry Christmas!
You make it look easy. Can you come and do my car?
Theres 2 retaining clips on each side of the steering colum. Take those out. The steering wheel will separate from the rest of the assembly. Now you only have to wrestle with thr bottom half and it is much MUCH MUCH easier. Id of saved an hour of wasted swearing and useless struggle lol.
Awesome. Thanks
Thank you for assisting in my unethical ways
Can you make more videos on how to fix different things on your Veloster? 🙂
I sold it not long after I made that video. Thanks for enjoying it though.
question, i have the same thing. what happen if i didnt fix it right now. is not going to cause me trouble.
It will probably be OK for many years without changing it, you will just have annoying clicking sounds.
@@Frostcall oh ok, thank you. i will change it then. or replace it. thanks.
5:09 - 5:13 Another Important Point, that connector there, instead of prying at it from the top side right side, if you poke the flat head screw driver on the opposite side underneath (the side where you plug stuff into it normally, there are two push pin thingies, you can push that clip in and it slides right out instead of risking plastic damage and or inducing a rattling noise by prying at it that much.
Any tips for breaking the last 14mm bold loose? I got to that very last bolt and could not break it lose without risking damage from slipping(its really hard to get the proper leverage), Im thinking of waiting untill its really cold outside and then either using a hair drier and or turning the climate control to blow hot air through the leg vents in the hope of some how expand and contract the bolt enough to break it lose more easily. I might end up having to bite the bullet and buy a torque wrench or somethin, or maybe a neighbor might let me borrow one. Also i was wondering if using any thread losener or stuck bolt spray cans would be a good idea, as long as i also put back on the thread locker afterwards, and as long as i clean all of the thread losener off And dont get it on ANY of the electronics/wire connectors... i guess i will save that as a last resort. Also Thank you for posting this video, you are a life saver!
The trick I use for stuck bolts is to slightly tighten them first, then try loosening again. Kind of a ‘rock back and forth’ thing.
@@Frostcall I don't know if I can tighten it, it'sREALLY REALLY on there. I can't budge it at all in either direction, it feels way over-torqued past spec. I think one of the techs at Hyundai the last time they were under the dash and stuff, they went a bit ham on that bolt. I mean I'm putting enough pressure to worry about breaking my wrench or shearing metal on the bolt. That tight.
@@CrazySaVaunT Yeah, sounds like it’s over tightened.
@@Frostcall It is still barely getting into winter where i live, CA, meaning just starting to get below 55F lowest at night. Im thinking i might be able to break it lose when its 40F, also thinking of putting an ice pack on/around the bolt before hand, or trying a few alternations of that and a hair drier. That or maybe make a deal with someone at the dealership to just brake it lose (though I doubt they will touch it without paying full price)
@@CrazySaVaunT Best wishes. I hope it goes well.
I have a WD Elements 107c hard drive, I've had it a few years and plugged it in the other day but no light or noise. If I remove hard drive can I retrieve files from it with a SATA cable?
That depends on what is the underlying issue. If the drive itself is dead then it won’t work even if it pull it out. If the problem is the power or data connection in the enclosure, then yes it should work.
@@Frostcall thanks I'll check it out, is there a specific kind of SATA cable for WD Elements hard drive?
@@HassanAhmed-wt3kc Nope, they’re all the same. Just get a SATA to USB adapter. They run anywhere from $10 to $100 but for your purposes pretty much anything should work fine.
@@Frostcall thanks I'll try it
If you open the drive up, can it be put back together again?
Yes.
I’ve never seen a veloster with a key before lol. Every one I’ve seen have been push button start. Very helpful though. 👍
Thanks again. I would like to add a few optional tips; 1. I found it easier to remove the plastic bottom housing prior to the removing the plastic bottom steering wheel housing. Once you get the bigger piece off, the smaller housing come off easier without having to wiggle it off. 2. It made life easier to just pull off the steering wheel after you remove the 2 12mm nuts. This would allow easier access to the 14mm AND the coupler it self. Reinstallation was much easier after I accidently pulled off the steering wheel. Lol
My steering collumn is moving in and out now that ive changed this
You're missing a bolt somewhere. Go over the steps again and I think you'll find the issue.
@@Frostcall oddly enough my adjustment lever moved so much it loosened that bolt that holds all of it i gave it a few small turns it adjusted as it should
What is the part called
'APDTY 112837 Flexible Steering Coupler'
L cameraman
I just did this repair yesterday. Getting the steering wheel mounted back into place was a little tricky I needed help lifting the shaft back into place. But other than that this video is spot-on and should be used anytime you need to fix this problem.
Hi sir what is name of the part please
This was an awesome how to except I now have an issue with my eps light coming on and no power steering. Does anyone know what could have caused this? Could the connections to the mobis maybe have come off? Thanks!
Check your connections (unplug, then plug back in) and check your fuses in the fuse box. This usually means something didn’t get connected all the way. No worries, it happens.
Reassembling now and realized i did not lock steering wheel and now its not straight. Should I continue? Is there a way to reset when finished?
All good. Put key in to unlock wheel. Was abke to get it straight before the tires started moving.
@@thekxl9836 glad to hear!
How much do you think one should be charged to get this work done? My car has similar issue.
The part is about $5 to $10 but there is about one to two hours of labor. Some shops charge about $150 per hour so you’re looking at about $300 to $400 to swap if you pay someone else.
@@Frostcall thanks for the prompt response. You’re so much appreciated. I’ll keep those numbers in mind.
@@shynemoshyne8404 I’ve seen some people report dealers who wanted $500, so don’t be shocked. It’s not that difficult to do for one or two people who are handy. A good meal and $50 can go a long way.
This was great, but let me add if you're 300lbs trying to do this for your daughter. Getting that 14mm is a killer.
I followed the instructions in this video step-by-step, and fixed it myself in less than an hour and a half! Thank you for your help and for posting this video!
