Hi Linda! Port Alberni is located on Vancouver Island which is a large island the size of the UK, about a two hour ferry ride from Vancouver the city. We’re fortunate to be away from the big city over here :) Island Life!

Currently making a video for this! Right now the largest employers are Vancouver Island Health Authority, Western Forest Products, School District 70, Catalyst Paper, Wal-Mart, Coulson Group and the City of Port Alberni. Many of my clients work remotely and good tradespeople are very hard to come-by so they are always in demand! :)

The effort is to show people how wonderful this city is and if they decide (on their own will) to move here and create improvements and love this city as much as me, that’s a great benefit for everyone. Vancouver island is a very desirable place to live in Canada! There are many more affordable places to live elsewhere but they offer different things than this beautiful island does :)

I just saw this video today even though it is an older video. I have a lot of very fond memories there. My Inlaws had a spot on Sproat Lake!! So we took our kids there a lot in summer months. Your video made me think about trying to figure out how I could actually live there. I am single and on disability and looking after my father who has Alzheimers in Nanaimo. In the future I will have to look at where I go next. I haven’t been to Port Alberni in many years.

Hey! There’s no direct flight into Port Alberni but you can fly into either the Nanaimo airport or the Comox airport and it’s about an hour and 20 minute drive from either of those airports :)

It’s always appeared to be similar to many other cities on the Island in terms of homelessness (obviously it’s going to exist in some capacity, especially in cities where winter is short and mild). I don’t lock my doors and feel comfortable leaving things outside in my yard overnight (lawn mower etc) and have never had an issue! There is a Homeless/Drug addiction problem everywhere and BC has done a ridiculously bad job in efforts to manage or remove it. They have just now 2024 acknowledged the massive failure the decriminalizing and open use law was. Maybe this realtor feels safe, she shouldn’t, It is a very poor idea to imply leaving any doors unlocked anywhere is safe. Street addicts have no conscience, and no limits, locked doors don’t guarantee no entry but they are a deterrent and forced entry is not silent like turning a knob.

I have a friend who's an international student and he bought a car to live in it because the cost of living is so high. Just something to consider. Even if you buy a camper: when you are done with it you can sell the camper and get your money back. If you are expecting to find a place for under $1,000 a month you probably won't find that unless you are sharing with multiple people. I would say if you have the courage to go asking local people, you will be surprised that some of the people will be very generous with information and helping you find a place.
