He was always political but with finesse. When people criticize a movie for being too political they usually mean that it lacks finesse and balance. That is why people live South Park which is often very political. The problem is when there is a lack of self awareness.

Really great video, keep up the good work. As you stated, when analyzing McKay’s material going back to SNL, he’s always had an anti-establishment edge behind his work (which I think contributed to what I consider some of SNL’s better seasons). That being said, I think that has an expiration date when you’ve been a part of and contribute to the establishment for as long as he has. At some point, it goes from “kicking it to the man” to “kidding with the man.” As for Ferrell, it isn’t surprising that he cut off ties with McKay. He’s famously done that with others (Chris Kattan talked about how he severed ties with him in his memoir) and he’s definitely someone you don’t want to piss off in the slightest.

Can’t stay I agree, The Campaign was weak and Get Hard just sucked while on the other hand I enjoyed The Big Short and even thought Vice was decent.

I find it fascinating that Adam McKay has a trilogy of modern USA and people who seem to like Big Short and/or Vice really get irked by Don't Look Up. And it's kinda funny to me and hard to ignore that Big Short was aimed at Wall Street, Vice was aimed at the government and Don't Look Up is aimed at the people. So Big Short and Vice were fun and good, but as soon as you make fun of the people... all of a sudden it becomes preachy... Don't Look Up is a satire. It's not supposed to be funny, it's supposed to be creepy and scary in a goofy over-the-top way. Like Idiocracy or American Psycho or The Death of Stalin...

Sure he may have always had some political elements in it but it was a lot more subtle and less propagandize. Plus you don't change or enlighten people by preaching to them. You open their eyes through the use of good storytelling and inserting subtle ideas. Nobody likes being preached at

Yeah McKay has gone down a weird road. He did so many Great comedy movies together. Now he is off on this political satire thing, Big Short was great but that's about it.

The McKay politics have always been super obvious, and it blows my mind that people don't acknowledge it. He's always portrayed anything masculine and right wing as idiotic. The only reason it worked is because he had Ferrell in it, turning that commentary into something lovably unhinged. As long as it's funny, people tolerated it. Movies have always had this stuff going on. They are always political. It's why artists get into film, because they want to get a point of view out there. But they can't control how the material is watched, especially when people don't have the same worldview as the creator or don't trust them as authorities on their chosen topic. When it comes to the masculinity issues, guys in the 2000's just took all the negatives and turned them into celebrations, which McKay allowed through that tone. Happens all the time, and that's why the messaging became more explicit in the last ten years or so, and so much more annoying. The creators don't want to be ignored and just used for entertainment, so they don't leave any subjective space for it. McKay is a prime example of it. Dude takes himself too seriously, especially for a comic writer.

If the filming had happened a little earlier (pre-covid) I have no doubt that the movie would be a lot better.

When I watched DLU I decided to shut off the political part of my brain completely so I wouldn't get overcritical. I found it to be an excellent comedy thriller that kept it on the edge of my seat from the first to the last minute. Except for the very last scene reverting to plain comedy after a perfect dramatic conclusion - I'll admit that was a little jarring.

I'm so glad you characterized "Don't Look Up" as a mess. I feel the exact same way. One of the film's critiques is how Americans are so obsessed with celebrities and celebrity gossip, yet ironically, most of the people who I know who like this movie compliment the all-star cast in it. That's just one of the problems I have with that movie.

It's insane to think that in the 2000s we had Superbad (my personal favorite of this era), The Anchorman, Pick of Destiny, Talladega Nights, Scott Pilgrim, 40 year-old virgin, American wedding, Bruce Almighty, Pineapple Express, Easy A, 21 Jump Street (these two might be a little into 2010s, but still) and I could go on and on forever, whereas today everyone is preoccupied with either well established IPs or politics for the sane of politics. And what's even more insane is the level of creativity and/or absurdity of these movies, but somehow they all worked really well. I really like social commentary and satire, but come on man, Idiocracy did it in 2006 without being patronizing or trying to shoehorn everything in our throats. P.S. To be honest, I really liked The big short and I liked Don't look up.

McKay has a solid flick or two that make you overestimate his career. Generally, his movies just aren't funny.

SNL. Highlights being the teleprompter down sketch seen early in this vid and one with Harvey Keitel as a door to door salesman who first turns down anything to drink only to change his mind and ask for a turkey sandwich and a Hi-C. My favorite part of his career might be how it seemed SNL had been re-crafted in style and structure and thereby rejuvenated. I'd swear the commercial break schedule was altered to allow for some of the transitions, but that could be my imagination.

Big Short is good but ever since he no good

Good breakdown. I think a McKay Farrell movie in 2024 would detract from their previous movies, like if they tried a new BTTF movie. Just be glad with the magic you had and leave it be.
