Episode 12 - UNCF and the Michael Jackson Scholarship – with Kenya Gray
Michael Jackson is one of The UNCF's largest contributors & in the 80's set up a scholarship fund that is still active to this day and has helped hundreds of students get an education.
Kenya Gray was a recipient of the UNCF Michael Jackson Scholarship in the 90’s and thanks to the fund, went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication with highest honors in 1999. And in a full circle moment, she's gone on to become the Director of Scholarships for the UNCF and now manages the Michael Jackson Scholarship.
In the season finale, Kenya joins me alongside The UNCF's communication manager, Roy Betts to talk about the impact of Michael Jacksons donation.

Thank you Paul so much for this interview. I became a life long fan of Michael when as a child at around 1992 in my local library I read in the Guinness Book of World Records that michael was the popstar above all others that helped the most number of charities, I remember staring in awe at what I had just read and feeling so much love and respect for this angel. I loved his beautiful music and dancing, but once I found this out, my level of love, admiration and respect for him soared, and I understood and felt the messages in his music at a deeper level eg heal the world, black or white, will you be there-my favourite song. Now I found out from your interview with Prince, that is the achievement that Michael was the most proud of, which is wonderful. I also love that Michael always thanked God first in his award speeches, he loved God and being an humanatarian. Prince and John are wonderful people and I am so glad they are carrying on Michael's legacy. x :)

Thank you so much for sharing your story with your son mr Woods, its beautiful and sad at the same time. You speak about your son in a proud way . In the year of 98 i lost my mother and until today it is difficult to me. As a father myself i cannot imagine what you been through. And what a privilege meeting Michael and spend a simple time with this man. God bless you and take care.

I LOVE your MJ experience, and really, everyone needs a badass friend like yours that put you up front not only during Michael´s concert but also for Diana Ross` show! 😂😍

Thankyou, thankyou thankyou Paul for this truly beautiful honest series about Michael Jackson. I honestly don't know what I now have to look forward to, every episode has really shown me what U always knew about our angel Michael. I have told so many about your series encouraging them to watch and learn the truth. They ask me why di you like Michael Jackson so much presuming it's his music and dance and not expecting me to add that Michael was the greatest humanitarian that lived. I grew up as a child of the 60s with posters of Michael in my wall, I could relate to him then, and still relate to him now and will always support him 💯, he deserves to be treated respectively and to be understood for the empathise he is, because he always will be. God bless Paul, and all your guests for speaking and sharing their honest stories about Michael. I will miss hearing these stories and truly hope and pray there will be a series 2. Michael is resting easy and with his beautiful smile, knowing he is loved and respected and that's due to your hard work Paul. Very much appreciated 🙏

Thank you both, Roy and Kenya, for helping to shape the future generations of learners, scholars, thinkers, and believers! I'm a junior in college studying communications hoping to work in the entertainment industry, and I'm thinking about transferring to another university, so when I'm searching for scholarships, (I'll keep those links in mind). Michael is smiling down on both of you, and he is so proud of you both. As Michael once sang to us, "If you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and make that change!" And thank you Paul, for another great episode, and a great first season! I hope and pray that will be a Season 2; we need more positive stories like this! Michael is beaming down on you from heaven! To Kenya, I do not know if you know of MJ The Musical, but the lead actor who originated the role of Michael as an adult; his name is Myles Frost. He is the youngest performer in history to receive the Tony Award at 24 years old. He is in his senior year of college, and he's studying music performance. And after he graduates, he will reprise the role of Michael Jackson in the London production of MJ The Musical in the spring of 2024. And he also wants to do acting in film, and pursue a career in music! Have you ever met him? He's from Maryland, and he grew up in the D.C. area. Maybe he could help you promote the scholarship for future students, and I know the two of you would become great friends!! Have fun at The Wiz too! And Paul, I know his story is not in your book, but Myles would be a great young man to talk with! He's a very positive role model for many fans in the Michael Jackson community, including myself. When he's on stage, he looks and sounds like Michael in the show! He would make a great guest on your podcast, and share his story about how he's keeping Michael's legacy alive. Thanks for a great season Paul! Hope to see you in Season 2! Stay safe and be blessed! Blessings to you too, Roy and Kenya! And Kenya, I can relate to you on a personal note about your "Thriller" story, When I first saw the music video as a little girl around 6 or 7 years old, I SCREAMED with Ola Ray when Michael turned into the werewolf and when he turned into the zombie! My face was like this: 😱 LOL! But years later, (just last year actually), I went back to Michael's music, and I re-watched the "Thriller" music video, and the documentary of them making it, I breathed a sigh of relief when I found out that they were putting all that makeup on him, and I knew that was only him, my fears instantly went away! It helped to look up Vincent Price too. Now, I just think of the Thriller as a fun video to dance to that I play every year on Halloween! So Michael helped calm me down when I watched the documentary! Dara

Also, yes, there was something about his soul, it was old and wonderful, and fun to be around, and innocent, and troubled, and a thousand things I'd never have the time or words to describe. Also, let me just say with all my heart how honored I am that a survivor such as yourself took a moment to recognize us, and compliment us when you're so worthy of recognition yourself for your own survival. Thank you again.

Kakeen- thank you for responding, firstly. As far as why they didn't put him under for extracting the bone marrow portions along the way- they did give him a sedative during the extractions, but it was just sedation enough, BUT, the important part was that type of sedation made it so they did not remember the experience. Often he would not remember even going there for the extraction. I was thankful for that part. There is nothing given to the parents or staff that have to listen to them scream. This was back then, perhaps there's a better method now. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

Deeply touching. Dustin is such an amazing dad and Aza was lucky to have him as a father. And I’m not surprised that Michael would just randomly reach out to a father and son he never even knew.

MissDana, thank you. To be honest though, whatever good or value I have become, it's because I was his father, and while I don't meant to argue your kind words- it's only because of him that I became who I am, in the end. So, in truth, it was really I that was lucky to have him. Thank you again.

Just taking a moment to say thank you, everyone, for all the comments so far, but mostly for just taking the time to be another person in this world to know my Son by name and learn about him and his fight, and of course to see one of the many, many selfless acts of Love by Michael. There was so much to cover and so much story to be told, that it could not all possibly be put in the video for this interview, and I wanted to tell everyone another bit about Aza's life that we just didn't have time and room to cover, because there's just so much. Because I'm so wordy, I failed to mention in good timing about someone who was very important and helped make Aza who he was. That person, is his Mom, Brenda. I married her when Aza was about 9 years old, and of course she'd fallen in love with Aza first (we often joked that she had to take me as part of the bargain). Even though Brenda was not his natural mother, she became his 'Mom'. They both mutually agreed to full parental adoption. What made her so important was that she filled in all the gaps in his life that I'd failed to see or didn't notice he needed. She, with only Love as a motivation, became a very very good mother. Though Brenda and I eventually divorced (which was mostly my fault as a damaged person very much in need of mental health counseling from years of trauma, damage, and stress), Brenda remained a good and persistant 'Mom', and many of his good qualities indeed came from her and her efforts. I simply cannot claim to be responsible for everything he became because she was part of that as well, and then somehow, he transcended us both.Thank you to everyone who took time to read this, and watch the video & interview. I'm grateful to all of you for becoming part of my Son's (and Michael's) legacy.

@@mm-uo5lp Well, while I don't mean to make anyone cry, I hope they were 'good' tears, and I'm honored you would compliment my reflection of my Son and Michael.

What utter nonsense! If you also count Brandon David Jackson who died in the day he was born Michael was the 8th child from 10 children Katherine and Joe got together! Randy and Janet still came after him.

Joda, thank you, very kind of you to say. I only apologize because I know how wordy I can be, and poor Paul has to find a way to make it all fit and decide (heartbreakingly so I imagine) what is to be cut out for the sake of making the video what it should be. I doubt I made that easy for him, and I know that while I am well spoken and intelligent, I can sort of ruin it by being overly wordy and over explain. Worse faults to have I suppose, but I can say- I will never tire of speaking about Aza, or telling the story of one special day that he got to spend with Michael that made a little boy so used to being sick feel better about himself for his life going forward because Michael CHOSE to stop everything, all his plans, and spend untelevised time with just him. How many humans could say that? How that made Aza feel after all he'd gone through, I feel like I owe Michael forever. Thank you again for your words.

Sang, thank you for your compliments. I've never believed that I was better than anyone, I don't know if I qualify for 'amazing', truly Aza and Micheal were far greater in magnitude for all things 'good human' than I will likely ever be, but I was honored to have my part in things as far as they were concerned. Thank you.

Dustin, thank you for sharing your story and journey with your son Aza. Love is a powerful thing. Your outlook on just living is amazing.. My husband's aunt use to tell me that sometimes being strong is all you can do. We are stronger than we think. Meeting MJ, that's awesome! I'll be checking out the book too.

Bonnie, thank you, and you're right on all fronts. Especially about strength, that's a good way to describe that moment where you feel like that's the only option. The natural thing to do, but then being a parent sort of makes that automatic too. Thank you again, and yes, do get Paul's book, obvious he's put heart and soul into it.
