Lady Lila was seized by authorities from a hoarding situation and animal cruelty on May 11, 2023. SPCA say she was about 8 years old. She is a polydactyl cat. After losing 4 precious cats in a matter of 2.5 years, I said no more. My heart was just too broken, but 3 months later, here I am with a new kitty. I love her to death.

I even managed to trim all the extra fur around her toes and under her paws which was preventing me from actually seeing her nails properly. Much easier to trim this way. This is my third attempt at trimming Lila's nails on my own. As you can see, it's not easy. She's clenching her paw tightly which makes it harder to cut, but It gets better each time. How many toes does my polydactyl cat have? The SPCA medical report did not have that information, but I was curious. With the help of a cone, I was finally able to count how many toes my poly girl has. On top of it, two toes had two nails each - Wow that's a lot of nails to trim. You are such a patient and loving cat mom! Lila is a lucky lady. I have tried to trim my cats claws and they won't have it. Even with a cone and burritoing, I could only get three trimmed in the hour we worked on them. I checked with my vet at their next visit, and she said that they check the claws every year when I bring them in, and there is no need for trimming as the girls are able to manage them sufficiently on their own. Of course, they don't have the extra fur, toes, and claws that your Lila does! Thanks for sharing!😺

Working at a shelter I’ve seen cats come in with claws growing into their toe pads :,) it can get awful, thanks for taking such good care of your kitty and showing others how to be responsible! So pretty, calm, and fluffy. Friends who had a cat used to take him to a vet every six weeks or so, to have his claws clipped and capped. Of course, capping all of Lila's claws might be a really expensive proposition.

I started trimming my girl's claws when she was a kitten. I would wait until she did something bad and link it to the word "NO!" She didn't love it at first, but she knew it was her punishment for what she was doing. For each nail clipped without a struggle, I would say, "Good girl!" At the end, she would get a treat. Now she stays still the whole time and doesn't struggle. What's funny is if I can see she's up to no good, all I have to do is say, "nooo..." and she'll change direction like I didn't just catch her on the way to making mayhem. Then she looks at me like, "Oh, hey... you're here? What's up? I thought you were somewhere else..." with an innocent look on her face.
That's a funny story. I was able to trim one nail without the cone and burrito, but she quickly changed gears, and said to herself, "Hell no, I'm not letting her do this." Then the teeth and claws came out, litterally. Haha! I love her.
My cat had a couple claws that were ingrowing really bad. I was lucky enough to be able to handle it, but it was sketchy! My guy feels so much relief now, and no more clacking on the floor!
Yeah I hear you. If you don't handle it, it will pierce the pad, infection will set in, then it's a mess.
She looks depressed. I know trimming their nails help you in protecting yourself from scratches and enhance the life of your furniture and linen BUT pls keep in mind that claws are a big part of their defense mechanism. She would be pretty much defeseless in the event of a predator attacking her. Obviously no owner stays with their pets 24x7 every single minute. Cats are known to venturing out esp in summer - sometimes even at night which is when claws are must-haves.
First of all, Lila does not go outside Second of all, I'm not doing this to protect my furniture or my skin. Lila has claws that absolutely need to be monitored and trimmed. Third of all, she's not depressed. I did not remove her claws, I just trimmed them. Too Funny! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@LadyLiLa777 I never said you "removed" her claws - I've written "trimmed" her nails. Trimming 2-3 mm tips from those overgrown claws may be fine but beyond that makes them easy target for predators. She doesn't go outside today, tomorrow, this week or month but when she does - you wouldn't know it. Cats are known to sneak out - I am coming from my experience of living with 4+ cats over the past 2 decades.
@@user_1abc Also, it isn't good for cats to be kept indoors. They need sunshine and fresh air and even more importantly, they NEED to be outside, it's who they are. Agreed about the claws, 2 - 3 mm sounds about right. I've had numerous cats and kept cats for 40 yrs.

Best to get your cat some corrugated cardboard to scratch on or buy some scratchy planks for her, and an indoor cat climbing tree. Lila's nails will naturally fall off and you can find them around your home. Best to not clip her hair because this is typical for many cats. Advisable to NOT feed Lila any treats. They kill cats and kittens and shorten their lives.

I was terrified also, but the alternative is money to the vet or groomer for have the job done, plus the stress of getting her in the carrier and the travel. You will get there with practice.
