I appreciate this wholeheartedly.

I thought this actor’s portrayal of Nick was quite original. When Pinter himself played the role, he played him as a “gentleman”-a high state official merely affecting sadistic psychopathy to break down a dissident couple and (in a scene that is excised from this adaptation) their child. Pinter’s Nick was still a monster, but one acutely aware of how his monstrosity could be used. Together with his perversion and degeneracy, he manifested a tinge of guilt at having to deploy them against Victor and Gila. This actor tortures the couple with more abandon; his sadism seems more spontaneous and less strategic. His power trip before them looks almost like a lapse of control. When he told Gila he loved her dead father, I got a chilling sense of what love could mean for the loyal servant of an authoritarian regime. Where Pinter’s Nick was a sadist, this guy’s Nick would be more of a sado-masochist. I’d like to know why they left out the scene with Nicky.
