The Top Truths About Relationship Coaching at Harper Therapy: What You Need to Know
If you’re feeling emotionally disconnected or struggling with communication in your relationship, you might be considering couples coaching. Relationship coaching offers a powerful way to strengthen your connection, work through conflicts, and foster emotional growth. However, it’s important to understand what relationship coaching truly entails. Whether you’re dealing with ongoing conflicts or simply looking to deepen your emotional intimacy, relationship coaching can be a transformative experience.
Here are the top truths about relationship coaching that will give you a clearer picture of how it works and what to expect.
Truth 1: Coaching Is a Collaborative Process
At its core, relationship coaching is a collaborative effort between you, your partner, and your relationship coach. It’s not about one person fixing the relationship or solving all the problems. Instead, both partners work together under the guidance of a coach to identify challenges, set goals, and implement solutions. Relationship coaching encourages both partners to actively engage in the process, promoting mutual accountability and growth.
In models like Terry Real’s Relational Life Therapy (RLT), coaching involves confronting relational patterns that are no longer serving you and working together to shift those behaviors. Both partners play a role in this transformation, making it a truly joint effort. This shared responsibility allows couples to make lasting changes and build a more balanced, connected relationship.
Truth 2: Relationship Coaching Is Focused on Practical, Actionable Solutions
Along with helping to understand deep-rooted emotional wounds, relationship coaching focuses on practical and actionable solutions to improve your relationship dynamics. Coaches work with couples to identify specific areas of concern, such as communication problems or emotional disconnection and then guide them in developing strategies to address these issues.
For example, RLT coaching offers practical tools that couples can apply immediately to their relationship. These include skills like effective communication, emotional regulation, and conflict resolution. Coaching provides the tools, but it’s up to the couple to implement these strategies in their daily lives. Over time, these small shifts can lead to significant improvements in the relationship.
Truth 3: Relationship Coaching Is Not Just About Communication
While improving communication is often a key focus, relationship coaching is about much more than just teaching couples how to talk to each other. It addresses a variety of relational dynamics, including emotional intimacy, trust-building, and how to navigate power dynamics within the relationship.
In RLT, for example, the coaching process goes beyond surface-level communication skills to address deeper relational issues. Coaches help couples identify the underlying behaviors that may be creating disconnection or conflict, such as unhealthy patterns of blame, avoidance, or grandiosity. By addressing these deeper issues, coaching helps couples develop a more authentic and emotionally connected relationship.
Truth 4: Coaching Can Bring About Fast, Tangible Results
One of the most appealing aspects of relationship coaching is that it can lead to rapid, tangible improvements in your relationship. Because coaching is focused on present-day issues and practical solutions, many couples begin to see positive changes within just a few sessions.
In models like RLT, coaching challenges couples to face uncomfortable truths about their relationship and equips them with the tools to make immediate shifts. This direct, solution-oriented approach can lead to quick results, whether that means reducing the frequency of arguments, improving emotional connection, or simply feeling more supported by your partner.
However, the long-term success of these changes depends on both partners continuing to apply the skills and strategies they’ve learned over time. Coaching provides a strong foundation, but maintaining those improvements requires ongoing effort.
Truth 5: Relationship Coaching Focuses on Empowering Both Partners
Another critical truth about relationship coaching is that it’s designed to empower both partners, rather than placing blame on one individual. Coaching helps each person take responsibility for their behaviors and contributions to the relationship, encouraging growth on both sides.

Let’s Talk About Boundaries

When you think about how most women are raised, we are raised to consider our own needs 2nd or 3rd if at all. So the idea of setting boundaries can feel selfish or unkind and this can make it difficult to have boundaries. The work of Julianne Taylor Shore, Setting Boundaries that Stick explores this work and includes ways of working with the brain to make the changes become part of how our brai...

1:17 The thing is I down play it or just thank the person that is giving me a compliment, but in my head I'm just questioning why they even think that. Because the rational part of my brain can agnoledge that I might have done something good but I still don't feel like I deserve the compliment. I just did what I could to help and that doesn't deserve to be complimented, but I only think that way about myself. When someone helps me in some way, I thank them, and feel like they deserve it, but I never feel like I deserve it. I never feel like I deserve anything or anyone good. Don't get me wrong, I love my friends, but I don't ever feel like I deserve them. I feel like they're too good to me, too nice to me. I don't feel like I deserve them, and I know I shouldn't be feeling that way, I know it's not healthy, but it really is how I feel, and i don't know how to stop it. I also feel gullty when they're worried about me in anyway. They don't deserve to waste their worries on me.
