He was running third with Rodger Ward leading and A.J. Foyt second. Ward’s car suddenly lost power. Foyt slowed to avoid Ward. Hurtubise couldn’t react fast enough and he ran over the rear of Foyt’s car. That launched him into the wall. He had massive 3rd degree burns but he survived and came back to race again.

It was a true miracle that no one died in that huge pile-up.

I was actually there with the uop shadow team the owner Jim bartel not Jim pace flew us out to help with any work on the cars we were on the wall watching the racing and heard a loud crash looked over and saw him upside down coming straight to us me and my dad were the first ones to the car we didn’t wanna hop over the wall incase of any other cars coming it started to catch on fire right when he was able to crawl out me and my dad helped him over the wall and asked if he needed water and said plz went to grab him the water afterwards we had to load the car up in the hauler and it was a mess damn near got cut up and just didn’t wanna damage the car anymore than turns out a few months later Jim pace dies from covid of all things how about that shit huh

I dont think I've ever seen such an amazing amount of debris from a crash. Herbert was struggling for his life after this crash, and literally 6 months later was in a formula 1 car, experiencing excruciating pain with each movement, and still managed 4th in said race for Benneton

The cars in these days had the speed, but didnt have the safety technology yet. They would rip apart, basically only giving one good impact of protection then the driver was completely vulnerable. This same issue would happen in indycar too.
