Im Doing A Show Garden 🧑🏼‍🌾🌿🌸 BBC Gardeners' World Live 2023
I have some amazing news to share with you all, im doing my first ever show garden at one of the biggest garden events in the uk. I never thought something like this would be possible when I got paralysed in 2009 @BBCGardenerWorldEvents @BBC
My garden is called: Love Yourself & Nature Retreat
The Love Yourself & Nature Retreat is inspired by Ben Thornton’s, aka ‘The Young Grower’s’, journey of healing the mind and body by creating an area to retreat to away from the outside world to enjoy the wonders of nature. Bursting at the seams full of flowers with colours blending together like a painting alongside growing organic produce, creating a wildlife haven and allowing you to love yourself at the same time. Being physically disadvantaged does not mean you cannot have the garden of your dreams. Ben’s garden escape showcases his lifechanging journey of becoming a grower. Growing has truly changed his life and has given him a life he never thought he could have after becoming paralysed at the age of 14 from a very rare illness.
The Love Yourself & Nature Retreat will be full of vibrant colours with a calm area to retreat to away from the outside world to enjoy the wonders of nature. With a busy border, bursting at the seams full of flowers and colours blending together like a painting, surrounding edible raised beds creating a wildlife haven whilst allowing you to love yourself at the same time.
This garden shows that no matter your circumstances, you can grow. Ben’s allotment and love for growing has not only been a hobby but a kind of therapy both mentally and physically. Ben will bring a small part of his No Dig organic garden to those that need inspiration the most and showcase how a garden can heal your body and mind whilst simultaneously creating a space to escape. When Ben started growing he had limited mobility from becoming paralysed at the age of 14. Within a year of having his allotment his body started to come back to life. By letting nature in, Ben has embarked upon a journey of healing in more ways than he could have imagined. We can’t wait to see the garden bloom into life at the Show in June!

Little bit to much repeating about the calender. Question I put the beans in last month there now end of November healthy looking young plants, should I cover them with fleece. Are they frost and ice resistant?

I have just finished building one these and I’m really happy with the end result but I hope never to see another cable tie as long as I live. Took forever. Did it on my own so took me about a week to build. The frame goes up easily but fitting the mesh is really finicky. I had the same issues with fitting the mesh on the door/ends. Pleased it’s finally up. Unfortunately found your video after I’d finished mine. Hey ho.

You are an inspiration :-) thank you for putting so much into sharing your love of gardening love of life, on UA-cam . It’s great to pace and take a break, know when to take time to reflect. I have just shared this video as my inspirational video for the gaggle of 21-30 yr old neurodivergent/multi medical disabilities anxiety/chronic fatigue sprogs as introduction to helping me on my allotment and a new shared half allotment for them. I have fibromyalgia and it has been an epic journey gaining an allotment at the start of covid lockdown, so thank you for the inspiration and reminder to maintain balance and keep growing, things get hard. But just keep the waves calm :-)

To be honest, I don't see a reason to restrict root growth with containers. The plants are better off with developing broader root system before reaching deeper for water and nutrients.
