    Hi, i have JD Lanz 700 , 1963 , and it started to heat up very fast ,probably mixing oil and water so I have to put new head gasket probably. Where can I find data about this work, how much to tighten the bolts and setting the valves? And also, when i start the motor, first 30sec it runs only on 3 cilinders, then on 4, what do you think is the cause of that and how to fix it? thank you !

    • @myoldtractorshed

      "probably mixing oil and water "...Check to see if there is water in the oil....if there is and the oil pump picks up the water you will likely need a new crank and bottom end bearings " I have to put new head gasket probably"...Could be, but it could also be the cylinder sleeves (I needed to replace them on mine..before I started the you tube thing.) JD in the era had a problem with the coolant cavitation and it (over time) wore the sleeve until they started to leak coolant into the oil pan. "Where can I find data about this work" ...A good manual is worth its weight in gold. "when i start the motor, first 30sec it runs only on 3 cylinders, then on 4,"... It could be many things, the head gasket as you already suspect (lowering the compression) Or just plan low compression from normal wear and tear, valves or rings wore injectors (bad spray pattern)I think I would check compression before I start tearing it apart.And perhaps test to see which cylinder is causing the miss, if you can find the problem cylinder I would switch injector to see if the miss moves which would tell you if it is just a injector. Hope this helps you a little. Scott

      @@myoldtractorshed Thank you very much. Today I disconnected first injector and started tractor to see if in this one is problem. Tractor worked on 3 cilinders and black smoke was coming out, but when I connected the injector smoke was white and increased a lot. I suspected on head gasket because of this white smoke and loss of power, but maybe it is only bad injector and termostat..? Oil is very liquid and see trough, but no signs of water or antifreeze in it, maybe it is only worn out. This tractor needs good detection before tearing apart.

    Hi from Germany, this little control pin, which is activated by that lever (it is a spring), is a mechanical hight regulator for the the three point. It is controlled by the top link of the three point. You have two levers for the hydraulic control on the right side of yout seat. The left one is up and down. The right one adjusts the sensitvity of the hight regulator. If you use perhaps a plow and the force by the upper link increases and pushes against the spring, the little control pin is also pushed in. It lifts up the three point a little bit. The Force of the upper link is releived and you can go on. It automatically adjusts itself.

  • @ruben_balea
    @ruben_balea 11 місяців тому

    Well, I kinda feel bat to tell you this but the original dipstick was actually as short as it looks in the parts manual, I bet the one on that homemade Y adaptor thing was probably fine, the proper oil level is almost high enough to leak by the holes for the shaft of the elevator arms if the seals are bad, that's why the plastic tub had so many screws and those steel plates to keep it super sealed against the top cover. Google for "huber parts OH20664" to see one, that's from a 300 but it's the same for all models. And that bend is correct, it was to center the dipstick in the hole to prevent it from interfering with the internal control levers. Also what you identified as some kind of quick disconnect is the original breather plug but missing the cap and the tiny spring that pushed down the sealing ball, it had the original flat dipstick welded to it. *You definitely want a breather plug* to not blow up the plastic tub. Mintor makes breather plugs with a built in dipstick you have to cut and mark to suit your application, those are easy to find online, in a lot of BSP and metric thread sizes and are not very expensive, probably other brands make similar ones. The closer to the original is the "ILAF" series, for example if that hole is 3/8 BSP (I don't remember that right now, but I know that cover has both BSP and metric holes) it would be the reference ILAF1G / 1GIFA10A and it comes with a 170 mm long dipstick. The notches on the hexagonal head of the plug were to lock the cap in, the cap had also a couple notches to prevent it from rotating since it was used as a hand knob for the plug because there wasn't enough space under it for a regular spanner. I will try to remember to measure the total length and the position of each mark in case you want to have them for reference, of course using a few liters of oil is not a problem unless you use something with a big or variouis cylinder(s) that needs a lot of oil

      Don't feel bad telling me I have made a mistake, so much better to learn it now that after I did real damage. The good news is I am working on this VERY slowly and I still have the old one and have not even looked at putting oil in yet. Thank you so much for all the info Scott

    • @ruben_balea
      @ruben_balea 10 місяців тому

      @@myoldtractorshed When you put the oil in, I suggest you use STOU or UTTO 15W40 for both the lifter and the transmission, so that in case the lifter leaks it will not damage the transmission oil. My 818 broke in the mid 80s for that reason, it had SAE 20 in the elevator and SAE 90 in the gearbox and the mix foamed and then the right axle bearing seized, they kept the old seal because it seemed to be fine but it always leaked a few drops each month SAE grades for gearboxes are different from SAE grades for engines, the lower viscosity allowed for SAE 90 gear oil is about the higher viscosity allowed for SAE 40 engine oil, hte main difference is that gearbox oil has special additives for that use, both STOU or UTTO 15W40 are perfect replacements for SAE 90 and have all the additives needed for gearboxes. STOU has also additives for engines too and can be used as the only oil in the whole tractor but some people don't like to put STOU in their tractor engines because it has friction modifier additives for oil-immersed clutches and brakes, the same people don't like ATF on the power steering of their cars for the same reason, even if most manufacturers put ATF in their power steerings...

      I thought mine were copper but they are not. I just went and took one off and checked it with a magnet and it is steel. Likely a soft steel of some sort. But I guess you could try copper, not a hard thing to change.You could also try to smooth out the ends of the fuel line with a block of wood and some emery cloth just make for damn sure you clean it well when you are done.I am sure this number is obsolete but this is the JD part number for those sealing washers. Another thought, those washers are thicker than a normal washer so I think they are supposed to compress some, we likey can't reuse them too many times, yours may just have outlived their life. I would take one of the banjo bolts to the dealer and just get new ones. I am 99% sure that it is the same pump as the JD2020 so the dealer should have no trouble getting new ones. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I bought a very used 510 in Campbellville in around 1981 and drove it on the back roads all the way to rural Oakville (there was such a place at that time!). In the winter. It took hours and was very cold! I also remember splitting it to put a new clutch plate in and trying to get that long shaft back in.... Very challenging. I also recall the very stiff steering (it had a loader). But I fixed that by mounting the power steering cylinder from a big Ford truck (where the drag link ran). Much better! "Good video any more coming? "...yes "Yes the rear main seal is confusing"...I machined the housing to fit a normal seal..cheaper, easier and better if I ever need to replace it again. "Are you familiar with adjusting the clutch?" did not try yet but likely will when I get this old girl back together.
