Watch my journey as I build a small custom square timber log cabin at my remote northern Ontario, Canadian wilderness property. I am harvesting the trees off my residence, milling into square timber, transporting north by truck & snowmobile and assembling on a vacant lot in the north surrounded by several thousand acres of crown land. My channel covers my three most favourite things: building projects, snowmobiles and wilderness adventures. I hope you enjoy.

Watch my process of setting the 15 piers that will support the cabin. I struggle with the weather and that I only get about 5 hours of progress each day trip up. We push through the struggles and achieve something solid for the cabin. Again this is my first time at this definitely not a how too video.
Finish The Tool Shed

A few days stitched together of building this much needed tool shed to protect all my tools from the elements and theft. This is not a how to video, I work in a laboratory for my career but I do enjoy building and being creative.

Looks like you are getting the hang of it pretty good. I miss running mine but my shoulder cant take it. It can get addictive lol. Good luck with the new job! Timber jig for the chainsaw my be more efficient than big circular monster. Flip the bolts so they are heads down. Great video bud.
I’ll try your idea on a new center mount when I’m next at my parent’s place. I might have to invest in that Timber Jig the Sawsquatch is slow and needs some amps to run it, very nice finish though. Thanks for your time!
@@againstthegrainliving1998 was meaning to flip the bolts on the mill to stop them dragging on the ground or sawhorses. Helped on mine alot. For a center mount maybe a slide pivot 2 piece thing. Top piece like your end mounts and the bottom like a saddle. Curved on the bottm rests on the tree with a slot for the adjustable pivot. Just ideas - you come up with a lot of great ones your own self. Cheers bud
Meow.
Enjoyed the video. I started out with a chainsaw mill as well and now have a woodmiser... though its still in the box. Follower of ringworm too. In fact its my next video. Keep up the good work. Enjoy the youngin
Thanks for all your support and kind words over the videos, I appreciate it.
I have the same sleds and I prefer the old carburetors over injectors I’m just looking around to see how others faired over time the ones I’ve seen around me haven’t unless there just to look pretty
She’s a beaut Clark!
Did you make the sled deck?
Yes I did.
@@againstthegrainliving1998 it looks awesome great job on it ...i never saw a video on it would be an interesting build!!
@@Jayjay-ji7ty search: “sled deck build” I have a video on it.
@@againstthegrainliving1998 I'm on it thanks!
Sled deck will be next year's project! Looks awesome and we'll built
Great video. I have an old 1850s stove that i want to restore sometime. Beautiful work!
Thank you. I have another one to tackle for an outdoor kitchen.
@@againstthegrainliving1998 looking forward to it
Awesome job on the stove!
Thanks took a bunch of time and money but I’m happy with how it turned out.
There is not one perfect in every situation groomer or snow drag. A rebar mat will work plenty good enough for low traffic trails. A custom rebar mat with heavy like 1/2" rebar and 1 foot squares works wonders. Like 10-12 bars for a 10-12 feet long about 4 foot wide mat. I use one pre-season. And when the trail is set I have a grader type towed groomer.
We use this set up on my parents farm conditioning the horse track it is 1” rebar 12’x12’ it works good on the stone dust race track also.
Excited to see the stove refurbish video/s.
Nice break action. Welcome back! Groomer will prob need adjustments every season but it looks like it makes sense. It did a great job. Good video
Good to see you got some snow finally. Brush out that trail to your remote cabin so you can use that nice trail grader you made and keep from getting that heavy Skandik stuck like last year. Then again you might make it easier for the riff raff to get back there. Looks like your on the 5 year building plan like me with The remote cabin build. Too bad your not getting much help. When your finished they’ll start showing up. 😅
Ya the remoteness adds some serious time, but that’s what I love about it. We will get there and yes they will all come to enjoy.
Where’s the barrel?
It’s a compact shotgun with a 10” barrel from factory that is legal in Canada. Side arms not allowed here but this is as long as it is not concealed. Just some safety for predators when I’m camping out alone working on the building.
@@againstthegrainliving1998 cool, you need an Sks to pop that Tannerite.
👏👌🎄🎅🏻🇳🇴🤠
Hay, looking at what you do its a total duplicate of my life lol. So funny!! I just wish we got more snow!
It’s the best life! Yes haven’t even thought of getting the sled out this year yet every weekend everything melt on me.
What is the make of that rear bumper & tunnel rack?
It is a Skidoo HD rear bumper for 20” machines rated for 1500lbs compared to the stock 1200lbs one. The wrap around bar the saw is attached to came on this model from factory but is also a Skidoo accessory. The Milwaukee stuff is on a universal wall mount from Milwaukee bolted up to two of Skidoos Multi Linq base plates a homemade combination. I think there are companies making aluminum plates that bolt to the skidoo tunnels now. Muskoka Freerider on UA-cam runs one on the mountain sleds that is much more low profile.
Sweet thank you!
A red neck groomer but it works and cheep smart thinking
Thats a crappie groomer
Great update. Little by little and it will get done. Enjoy the time with baby! See you next time
Thanks again for sticking with me and sharing my channel on yours.
Bugs look intense. Cool channel, looks like you got a nice setup going
Yes the bugs can be very intense at times. Thanks for the interest in the channel.
Nice job! I did something similar, and it works surprisingly well! It just makes it easier to keep up on it every time it snows.
Enjoy your videos. Why are you building an 8-inch floor?
I had an idea and I’m running with it. It’s really that simple. Now the idea has changed drastically in three years but the floor is an original idea that stayed.
Great update video. I've been watching from day one and now I understand the dovetail floor system. Hopefully you can get a floor sander out there to even the timbers and throw a nice finish on them.. Nothing nicer then a natural wood look! Last of all. congrats to you and your wife!! It's awesome to see great changes from all directions 😉 Marc from Ab, Can
where did you get the recoil ?
Right from BRP your local skidoo dealer will have it.
Congratulations on fatherhood! Always enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for the kind words and your support.
@@againstthegrainliving1998 Welcome. As a fellow creator i know the work involved to get the videos out - now with a new baby its on a whole new scale. good luck and we will be here when you can post. Its nice to get a picture of your idea - wasnt completely clear back when you were milling them. makes sense now
Love the pics of the Moose especially the baby
There’s more of those just ask lol
does this ski set up slay tow better than the tobogin type I seen you use.
The metal home made set up with 4 ski’s has been the least resistance best turning and heaviest hauling set up I’ve towed with in the past two winters. I have never counted the trips in and out but it would be in the hundreds based on mileage on the sled.
how would it rate against an ATV with tracks.
I don’t have have any experience with an atv with tracks in extreme terrain or working it. I do know the snowmobile is way faster especially on the way back empty. The snowmobile will go through a fresh dumping of snow better as well. However I have found all of this setups draw backs. I have been looking into possibly going the atv with track setup for a better year round vehicle.
Great work! Any chance you have a video or link to a video explaining how to use the laser to lay out precise hole location?? Thank you.
I wish it was precise hole location’s. lol I’m not a building and just figuring things out as I go and some aspects have not been so precise. I end up just dealing with the consequences and think up some sort of solution. I wouldn’t recommend my videos for how too’s.
Looking good. Triple planer work ok?
Works great! It’s a bit of a workout though.
Nice hitch mod... when the karyon is loaded it looks hard to line up the hitch with the skidoo mount, as is the case for any combination, I tried an adjustable hitch arm, a tube within a tube.. the process still needs a left and right line up but then slide the inner tube up to the skidoo, connect, then back up the skidoo, which slides the inner tube into the outer tube to a stop, then a pin is used to lock the two tube together for towing ... just an idea Rick
Thanks for the idea when I get back to hauling this winter we will see if we need further modifications and possibly use some of your ideas.
Why are you building so close to the edge of the drop off???
Because he goes against the grain.
The footprint of the cabin is 32’ and the spot I picked out was about 38’ of flat so it inherently ended up close to the edge. There is enough room to walk around the entire outside.
@@ernieferguson9513 Exactly!
Not everyone is half in the bag, great way to sell the area and sport. How about time the speed down, 103 on trails is nothing to brag about. Love how you boast about riding right and being safe, yet have to “rip” the trails. Not a good example, stay home! Not sure if I am supposed to thank you for Your service,
Thank you for the view and interest in the channel. I hope to see you on the trail someday enjoying our wonderful sport of snowmobiling. Also hope you learned something useful from this informational video.
Glad you were tied off with the harness. I hear Uncle Keith laughing!
Yep he was glad I checked to make sure the spout was closed lol.
Any reason you couldn’t just bolt the packout mount plate to the tunnel without a linq adapter ?
You can probably pull that off but I switch back and forth between my Linq bags and the Packout stuff daily depending on what I’m doing.
I did just that. It isn't difficult to do. I set the mount on the Linq plate, mark through the packout mount holes to the Linq plate, drill holes in Linq, bolt packout down, reinstall Linq plate. Easy. The Milwaukee Packout system has a lot of options. I use it for everything.
You need to get a better mic. Very hard to hear what you're saying, even with the volume cranked up.
Boy do those trees sway when you are up that high!
Ya it can make ya feel like the ground is moving for how much the trees move that far up the height of them.
Love the progress!
Thank you, it’s slow but it’s progress.
@@againstthegrainliving1998 I’m doing the same on raw land. Slow process is so correct, I totally understand. Love the vids, keeps me motivated as well 🍻
@@jaredadams3774 Very good, the absolute best way to stay out of trouble and unwind. I hope it takes a lifetime time to build things on the property.
Nice! Can't wait for more episodes.
Got tagged with you on Rustic Caveman so thought I'd say a hello. So hello from MIllionaire Paul in the UK :)
Just don’t tell Michele how much you have spent in total lol
Mother Nature always wins. Sometimes its best to wait till things dry out.... But I feel your pain. I know your chomping at the bit to get the concrete poured. Maybe spend the wet time planning out short cuts on the build. Thanks for taking the time to show your progress. I think access is the most difficult part of it....
Yes the access is the most difficult part of the build, it is also the reason I could afford the land in the first place. I had to find an undesirable piece of land and make it desirable to me which I have but it’s not without its difficulties. I wish I could wait for dryer times but I’m at that age where weddings and babies of my close friends take a hand full of my weekends up each summer. Snow will be here again before I know it.
It would be great to teach the dogs to carry firewood!
Yes but they just sleep.
its a process - you are doing great and improving every video :)
Thank you for the kind words, I appreciate it. I’m a few hours away from firing up the excavator this is a big weekend!
nice to see you still going to Build a cabin its been a long slog but you are getting there
Thanks for sticking with me all this time!
Great video. I'm also getting anxious for the build. Beautiful spot you picked out. I work with suntuff roof sheathing quite a bit. Best way to make a ridge cap is to split a sheet in 2 or 3 strips and fold it over at the ridge. Unfortunately it can buckle a bit during temperature changes but it normally finds its place again. If you can use screws with a large neoprene washer and predrill the holes slightly bigger than the screw, it will help with the buckling issues.. Keep those videos coming!! Nice to see the dogs out!
Thanks for the tip with the suntuf product I’ll be sure to attempt it.
Thanks
Like the videos of actual riding the snowmobile, FYI...
What ramp is that
11’ Long Ramps modified to work for snowmobiles. I have a build video you can check out if interested.
No up/down ,movement on the hitch??
Just the slop in the pins and flex in the flat bar, this off season I am changing up some things and the hitch is one of them it with be able to pivot back onto itself.
