What is Bihu festival?
Bihu is a harvest festival celebrated in the state of Assam and other Northeastern states of India three times a year:
Bohag Bihu
Also known as Rongali Bihu, this is the most popular Bihu festival and is celebrated in April. It marks the Assamese New Year and the beginning of spring. The first day of Bohag Bihu is called Goru Bihu, when cows are worshipped and decorated with garlands. The second day is Manuh Bihu, when people wear new clothes and prepare special dishes.
Magh Bihu
Also known as Bhogali Bihu, this festival is celebrated in January and is centered around food.
Kati Bihu
Also known as Kongali Bihu, this festival is celebrated in October. It is an animistic festival that reflects a season of lesser supplies.
The word "Bihu" comes from the Sanskrit word "Bishu", which means "to ask the Gods for prosperity during the season of harvests". Bihu is a celebration of the sun's solstice and its impact on agriculture. It is also a time to connect with nature and celebrate an ancestral legacy.
Bihu is celebrated with traditional instruments such as the dhol, taal, pepa, toka, baanhi, xutuli, and gogona.
