Marc Lipman: NTM Standards of Care
A talk by Professor Marc Lipman at a UCL-TB networking meeting on 11 July 2024.
Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) infections are becoming more common in the UK. They are often extremely hard to diagnose and to treat, and can be extremely debilitating and are sometimes fatal. The lack of knowledge has led to inconsistent care, and as a first step in addressing that, a Standards of Care document has been developed to describe the minimum standards that should be in place, and the metrics needed to evaluate and improve the situation.
This document was just launched on 9th July, and here Marc describes the motivation and what they include.

Asad Zaidi: ICE-TB - a new classification for improved TB care and prevention
Переглядів 7242 місяці тому
Asad Zaidi presents a new framework, published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, seeks to replace the approach of the last half century of defining TB as either active (i.e.causing illness and potentially infectious to others) or latent (being infected with the bacterium that causes TB [M tuberculosis] but feeling well and not infectious to others) - an approach researchers say is limiting pr...
Access to medicines to TB: Rifapentine
Переглядів 1063 місяці тому
Despite the development of new drugs, and trials to support more effective treatment regimens for tuberculosis, cure cannot be achieved without access to medicines. Drug pricing, access policies and patent issues are often responsible for inequalities in getting access to lifesaving medicines to people that need most. Our previous webinar (ua-cam.com/video/ldYiJ9HY2_8/v-deo.html) gave an overvi...

Aerosols spread infectious agents such as SARS-CoV-2 and Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and the pandemic brought the roles of airflow and ventilation to the forefront. In this talk Lena Ciric investigates both ventilation and the use of partitions in the spread of aerosols. Linzy Elton: Taking TB sequencing on the road - Developing a pragmatic pipeline for use in LMICs

Antibiotic resistance in TB is caused by changes to the genome sequence of the pathogen M. tuberculosis. In High Income Countries, whole genome sequencing (WGS) is increasingly being used to identify drug resistant strains, as this can be faster than waiting for traditional testing that requires weeks for the bacteria to grow. But can WGS be used to compliment routine diagnosis in resource cons...
