How to build Landing net jigs and templates
In this video I talk about how I make the different templates and jigs I use to build my fly fishing landing nets. This is brief overview of my process, I could make an hour long video of myself rambling on an on about my process but I think that would bore most people. If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment below and if you like this video please like and subscribe. Thank you.

Please like and subscribe. In this video i'm show the carving of the landing net I recently finishing building. I used several different dremel carving bits to accomplish this. This is not an instructional video as i'm no expert in dremel carving. This video is shot over three nights and 7 hours of carving just to give you an idea of the time it took to complete. I am no expert, I merely watche...

Making of a trout net
Переглядів 18 тис.4 роки тому
In this video I show how I make a trout sized landing net. The handle is made from a piece of maple burl. The hoop is made from zebra wood and walnut. I sourced my net from Jans Net Craft. Enjoy!
Whoa 😮 Give me a sec to gather myself! Bruh, all I can say is awesome and mad respect.
Beautiful work James. What type of router bit did you use for the slot?
do you purchase the net bag first???
As far as deciding the size of my net, I do ensure that I can purchase a bag(net) that will fit it. Janns nets have a good selection if your looking. Typically I use Ed Cummings brand
@@jamesfeight5818 thank you for the reply! I appreciate it. That’s exactly what I was thinking. Here’s my “other “ question. Is the net circumference that I’m measuring or the front to back- side to side measurements? I’ve also seen several with only the bottom of the net measurements and the deep”ness” of the net measurements. This is my final confusion.
I believe it’s a cross pattern measurement. Length to width. So like 16x12 or something like that. I would go bigger if your unsure at least for the first net. People tend to like a deeper bag
Very informative video. What size, brand net do you use on this model?
When you steam the strips did you do all strips on the forum at once or one at a time like the glue up. I like the way you secured the laminate with thr cord instead of clamps. Im getting ready to do my first net, im glad I found your video. Thanks Art
Do you sell the forms/jigs? Is there any place to get them if you do not? Very good video, very informative! I just would like a template/form/jig as a place to start…
Can’t say I’ve ever sold a jig. I would suggest a good place to start is just making a actual size drawing on a larger piece of paper or cardboard and really fine tune it before you transfer it to wood and starting cutting. Sometimes I look at the drawing for quite a while before committing it to wood.
James, I’ve been making my nets for about ten years. I have come up with several different ways to attach the lanyard. Have not found the perfect one yet. Can you tell me where you got your brass swivels you used?
I get them on eBay. Look up Solid Brass Swivel eye rotating connector for bag fob key chain craft use
@@jamesfeight5818 thx
Hello Jim, nice work! I am building my first net out of black walnut and can't make up my mind on what the best finish should be for it. Can you help me out and give me some guidence? Shellac, Lacquer, danish oil, epoxy????????? I'm just not sure!!! Cheers!
I’ve used a couple different methods over the years. I have had the best results with a marine spar urethane mix. I like to mix this with mineral spirits 50/50. I use a cheese cloth wrapped in a clean rag to apply this finish. Quick thin coats, steel wool between each coat. 12 coats minimum. Wait 24 hrs between coats.
So cool, did you make up the jig for keeping the steamed wood in shape?
I am thinking of making my own Lansing net. I dont have much experience working with wood what will probably be evident by my question. Can i not just cut a frame from a wood plank instead of building the arch with laminate?
I wouldn’t suggest it. The grain of the wood going in two or more directions over such a narrow piece wouldn’t be very strong at all. The multiple piece of wood with the grain going in one direction is what gives it its strength
👍👍👍👏👏👏
Very nice run through, thanks
That net is awesome!!!!! Do you sell these?
Thank you. And yes I do sell these, usually made the order
Handle shape is awful, in my opinion. But the nets absolutely beautiful.
Typical shape for the high end trout nets they use here in Japan. That said, everyone has their own tastes.
Absolutely gorgeous. The quality is amazing!
nice net and instructions! Where did you find that size bearing for your slot cutter bit?
How many strips do you typically use per net? Any woods that you have found work well or not so well? I am getting a form done now and hope to start bending soon.
I shoot for an over thickness of between 3/8 to 1/2”. My strips are pretty thin so I usually use between 9 and 10 strips. I’ve had good results with different hardwoods like padauk, maple, sapele, walnut, bloodwood, Purple Heart. Zebra wood works well but you have to pay attention to the grain direction. Keep in mind you have to pay attention with each species of wood but I’ve just noticed more so with zebra wood.
Thanks for this video this is exactly what I’ve been looking for to get started building myself a net.
Never used one but I want to make one.
Nice James. One of the most informative videos I’ve come across.
Thank you, even after it’s done and published I still think I missed some stuff but, that’s just the way it goes.
Very cool!! Where do you get the rubber net from?
James! Beautiful work and thanks for the detailed explanations. I've found that when building the clamping cauls the appropriate size to accommodate the thickness of the hoop I've used a hole saw cut out with the correct radius to use as a guide while tracing around the hoop. Also, what slot router bit are you using? Thanks for the help!
I use a 1/8 by 1/8” slot cutting bit I’ve found thru mcls tools. I called them up and told them what needed and they were very helpful, and the price is extremely reasonable.
@@jamesfeight5818 Thanks, James!
Very nicely done!
Could you do an equipment requirement list for this? I'd love to try and make my own nets.
I am slowly working on a jig and template video. I will keep this in mind for this video. Thank you
👍👍👍💯💮🙆👏👏
Impressive! Great work Jim
Excellent work!
this content is very helpful
Thanks, I’m happy to hear that
Nice job , you should sell them . American made Brother 👍
Nice build!!! I like your design. Where do you get your burl?
Thank you, I source it from lumber mills or I’ve ordered smaller slabs online and had them shipped.
So good!
Wondering where you might have gotten your templates from? Can't seem to source one...
I didn’t get them from anywhere. All the jigs I use I made them from scratch. I merely got my French curve set out, drew a shape that liked and transferred it to plywood, refined it over the course of several interactions. Would you like to see more content on this?
@@jamesfeight5818 surely, trying to build a few for me and friends... Thank you
I learned something new watching your 2 videos and that is the jig method for glue up's. I like the Dowel setup. Sad you turned off comments on your latest video. I learn from what others ask and say. Like your source on the Gun Strap Swivel. Impressed with the finishing process. I hope to expand my business into Nets and Fly Boxes some day. I was very impressed with your method of applying wood dye with a brush. I had a thought as I saw the handle being stained... How about some little holes in the face of the handle that are color filled to look like a trout speckles.... Good Job :)
Sorry about the comments being turned off, I’m still learning how to UA-cam. I fixed that feature, glad you like the video thanks
That's amazing👀I produced several, but I was preoccupied with grain of wood, and there was n't the idea that I painted
Nice job! Where did you get the router bit to cut the groove on the outside of the net? I've been looking for one for a while
Mlcs, it’s in the slot cutting bit area. Here’s a link to the page. I built one that cuts 1/8x1/8 slot. www.mlcswoodworking.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/smarthtml/pages/bt_slot.html
well done
Really nicely done - excellent finish. Loved the video! Obviously took some time to compile!
Thank you, I’m the process of making another video.
Awesome
Thank you
Great net, I’ve been making them for several years now and enjoy seeing other craftsman making theirs. I’m always looking for different ways to attach my lanyards, I noticed your attachment looks black. I make my own sometimes out of brass but they take a lot of time to get to a decent finished product. Can you tell me where you got yours? Thx Larry B
I’ve found two styles I like, the black ones I use are on amazon, I believe they are call gun sling swivels. I also use brass ones that I found on eBay called swivel eye rotating connector. They come in a couple different sizes. I prefer the 7mm size.
Thx for the info. LB
Biddy, do you have a web page?
@@digitalwoodshop James , I do not have web site although I’ve been giving so thought lately. I’ve made about fifty nets so far but I don’t sell them. I usually give them to friends and relatives or my own family. I noticed you cut your strips at 1/8”. I’ve found a lot of woods break easier than others so I usually cut them at 1/16”.
Great video Jim!
