Timeless Big Sur and Ventana Wilderness Adventure
A short Redwoods adventure in Big Sur. Opted to take the old coastal stage road from Bixby Bridge to Molera SP trail camp. It crawls over scenic hills and thru deep redwood gulches. Ocean views and white knuckles. Next day hiked the Bobcat trail following the river to legendary Julia Pfeiffer Burns SP to spend the night enveloped in the deep groves. Lunch at Big Sur Inn gives new meaning to lunch ‘in’ the river. Slept cowboy style in a giant grove watching the trees darken and then open its portal to the stars. Next day explored the park, the homestead, the gorge and swimming and dunking the crystal river. Many people in the park on/in the river but the joy was palpable. Returned hike to Molera camp equally refreshing.
Part 2: Tassajara Hot springs deep in the Ventana Wilderness.
Ventana wilderness, Tassajara hot springs, Hearst Hunting Lodge, battle tanks, oh my. After some mellow hiking at Big Sur, I secured a day pass to the Zen meditation center at Tassajara Hot Springs deep in the wilderness. The 17-mile forest service road from Carmel valley is difficult and scenic if you have the courage to take your eyes off the road. After I got blissed out in the plunge pools and creek I floated down the road to a random camp for the night. Recalling several interesting conversations with guests and practitioners I drifted off to sleep with the coyote chorus.
Next I took the Jolon road which runs through the massive and remote Fort Hunter Liggett garrison to William Randolph Hearst’s hunting lodge. Designed by Julia Morgan c1929, the massive hacienda is open to the public as a hotel and transient officer’s quarters. Unfortunately, I didn’t have reservations and was turned away by the military police. Fortunately, it was weekend so there were no active battle tank maneuvers. The Jolon-Nacimiento road to the coast was closed so I slowly turned homeward.

Lost Horse Wilderness - Joshua Tree National Park

Hiking the Lost Horse gold mine trail in Joshua tree national Park. It’s about 7 miles with connecting trails to Ryan Ranch ruins and Geology Road. No water sources. I started late and opted to spend the night (with a wilderness permit) cowboy camping along the trail under the stars. Great wide views of Pinto basin and both Mt San Jacinto and San Gorgonio showed their snowy peaks.

Whitewater Preserve is surrounded by Mt San Gorgonio’s Sand to Snow National Monument and includes the year-round Whitewater River and a seven mile wilderness trail connects to Mission Creek Preserve drainage. The canyon has a robust population of bighorn sheep, deer, rattlesnakes, and bear, and is an important wildlife corridor between the San Bernardino and San Jacinto Mountains. I frequently...
Marble Canyon Overnight in Death Valley National Park

I got my permit approved to hike the gorgeous Cottonwood-Marble Canyon in Death Valley. I planned a 27mile counter clockwise Loop that starts near Stovepipe Wells. Was supposed to be 3 - 4 days lizard backpack. There are several springs for water avail on trail. No cell service. There’s a legendary wild band of white palominos resident occasionally in the upper canyon. I saw signs of their graz...
June Lake Loop - Rush Creek Trail

Rush Creek trail in the June Loop area rises up along the mountain wall over Silver lake and passes near horsetail falls. The trail climbs gently and crosses a 500 ft stairs/railcart alignment (Yikes!) to Agnew and Gem and many other alpine lakes. The sierra range - though wild and beautiful - is both a recreational playground and an engineering marvel of power generation, water storage and min...

Hot springs hunting in the Mammoth Caldera. Mammoth Mountain is a popular ski and all year recreational area - and classified an active volcano. The caldera is about 50 miles wide and 75 miles long. It is spectacularly beautiful mix of alpine mountain lakes, wilderness and river bise...
Pine Canyon Climb & Hike
Переглядів 60Рік тому
Our climbing instructor Mike (we were 3 Mikes!) chose Pine Creek Canyon for its big rock walls and easy access from our camp. We drove up and “wowed” at the beauty of the place as we drove deeper into the valley. It was hard physically but after harnessing in I became thrilled by my ascent. It felt intimate to be exploring the big granite wall. The Sierra never disappoints. The scenery left me ...
Fossil Falls & ‘Burro’ Schmidt’s Tunnel

-I’d noticed the old sign to Henry “Burro” Schmidt’s historic mine tunnel as we barreled past on ca14 to the Sierra - or heard about it elsewhere. Way back in remote Last Chance Canyon desert wilderness. Driving was a bit of a challenge, some deep sands and rocky sections but with good signs, aired down tires and a tracking map app I only got lost once briefly. Spent the night camped at the tun...

An amazing phenomenon of nature explodes on miles of hillsides with golden poppy flowers and millions of short lived “Painted Lady” butterflies. There will be other possible sites all over the state this spring because of the wet winter weather. Unfortunately Walker Canyon in Lake Elsinore will be off limits because of crowds and accidents. You could be fined or arrested.

    that kind of ground is hard on tires. we pack TWO spares for the wild hot springs in BC, and a repair kit, AND a compressor assist, two battery vehicles, blah blah blah. the BC Canada WILD hot springs are on another level. Some are only known to locals and are NOT in the book (which is pretty out of date).

    do you need a permit or can i just camp there. I saw on the website that you choose your own site once at the campground so I don't really think you would need a permit. I may be wrong tho?

    • @mikesadventures
      @mikesadventures Рік тому

      You need a permit, about $24 online. Both Mora Ridge camps have about 25 sites with picnic tables. Chose your own. Weekdays are empty.

      Crystal cove state park has three dry hike-in camps and one car/tent near the beach. Reservations online. Advise Deer camp which has shade. Moro camps are great views but very exposed and very hot, no cover. Carry water and electrolytes avoid hypothermia.

    How long of a hike was this to get to your camp? Was there ocean views?

    • @mikesadventures
      @mikesadventures 2 роки тому

      Hi, I think it took about 2 hours to hike up the hill to Upper Moro Camp. There are distant ocean views, 360 degree all around and great sunsets. Beware it’s a dry campground, ***carry lot’s of water.***. It’s also very exposed, there is no shade and dangerously hot in summer. Deer Camp is farther away by a few miles but offers shade trees but no water and no views except stars.

    • @eddiediaz3787
      @eddiediaz3787 2 роки тому

      @@mikesadventures was there a ranger station to get water on the way up or near the camp?

    • @mikesadventures
      @mikesadventures 2 роки тому

      No. There is only water (and showers) at the Beach car camp parking trailhead where most backpackers start. There’s no water from the two Moro camps or Deer Camp for 5 to 6 miles until Willow Trailhead on El Toro road. The water spigot at Willow TH is hidden in the bushes by the Rangers trailer. Bring hydration electrolytes for your drinking water. Enjoy.

    Laurel canyon - Willow Road trail is a three mile Loop starting from the Willow staging trailhead off Laguna Canyon Road SR133. It explores into the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park and is one of the few trail with some tree cover part of the way.
