[English subtitles] MS Sleipner Mayday Call
This is MOST of the mayday call, as some parts were never recorded due to radio failure. It should also be clear that the sinking was going on for over 30 minutes, so this video length does not represent the real time situation; I've just compressed it to be as short as possible.
On Friday, 26 November 1999 Sleipner left Haugesund at 18.50 on course for Bergen. Across the open sea at Sletta, the boat experienced strong winds from the south-west. At 19.08 the boat crashed into the rock called Store Bloksen. Immediately after the crash, Sleipner notified the authorities of the accident via Rogaland Radio (RR) which was relayed to the Hovedredningssentralen (Joint Rescue Coordination Centre of Southern Norway), stating that Sleipner had hit the rocks near the Ryvarden Lighthouse.
Recognizing the possible consequences of the accident, the JRCC declared a Mayday situation, something the Sleipner crew had not done. All ships within a 30-45-minute radius of the accident were asked to assist in the rescue operation, and about half an hour after Sleipner sank. Approximately 10-12 boats were providing assistance.
Of the 85 people on board, 69 were saved. Afterwards the bodies of the remaining 16 people were recovered and identified. This made it the most severe accident with passenger ferries in the recent history of Norway.

It puzzles me that he didn't mention "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday", and didn't emphasize that there is a catastrophic accident. Perhaps it wouldn't have made much difference, but for the ships and boats in the area, as it was completely dark, it might have made them realize they should have come closer - a lot quicker. I run a sailing school myself and have concluded long time ago: NAVIGATION is the thing you need to plan, focus on, get right and never ease up on, especially in Norway and Sweden.

I remember this day. I was sixteen and lived in Stavanger. I left for a party that night when we first heard the news - the weather was terrible, with winds and rain.

I know this vid is published year ago, but still.. I can confirm that this is NOT Phillip. I know this guy driving. He actually published this vid him selves at first. It went viral and reached well over 1. mill. views. He had a dog that the breader was able to buy back from him after suspicions of violence. And I adopted this dog. You have now seen him around innocent women. I have seen fractions of what is capable to do to animals. This is peanuts. And I have now experienced how bad traumatized dogs can be... BTW. She is still alive, now just reached 11 years and are living a good life. Still with some issues but she is a happy lady owning her own bed and couch and everything else soft. That used to be mine...
In my eyes the Captain is a true hero. Imagine yourself keeping calm drifting in heavy waters and in complete darkness without the bow. I travled with Sleipner from Austevoll to Haugesund that same day. Hours later the ship sunk. Salude to those who lost their lives that night.

My friend was on this accident. He saved at least 3 people and got nothing written about it in the local news. But a soldier from ours place, that got panic and almost drown others people was written about like a hero, and got medal and so on! Was on this boat a lot and it was very nice boat. Rip to all dead people.

Scooters fault! The driver was probably an amateur, a bit stressed and got agitated by the scooters rage. She then tried to drive around him and also go past the parked car. Scooter did everything he could to make it as hard for the woman as possible while stressing her out. Clearly just waiting for her to do one more mistake. Scooter driver should be charged for assault or something, whatever the norwegian law says.
Not exactly... the car didn't have the right of way due to a truck being in the way of her. The correct way would've been to reverse and pull over and give way to the scooter. That being said I don't think the scooter guy did everything in his might to stop being run over and pressured the woman a little too much into making a move. Although the camera points downwards to his foot as it is being run over, I do not believe he had full vision over it hence the reaction from him shortly afterwards. Him breaking the glass was extremely overkill imo, but he was probably filled with adrenaline due and angry to the woman not listening to what he asked her to. In summary, BOTH are in fault of something, but if you go by the law, it's technically the woman's fault for; creating the situation, not knowing how to reaction in said situation, her action leading to another situation and so fourth. Anyway, both are stupid so I guess it doesn't really matter in the end. :P
@@CasualBandit I could probably dig for a few hours and find appropriate laws for this situation and I would probably be willing to bet a lot of beers that a few of those laws would put the scooter in the wrong because of agitation and aggression leading to the woman's fear and stress, provoking the woman to act irrational and drive away while cutting a bit too close to him. Obviously yes the woman was according to traffic laws in the wrong of not giving away of the scooter straight away and very slow thinking etc, but because of what I just wrote, I blame 100% on the scooter for her driving his foot over and her smashed window.

It's so sad that he got blamed for everything when really, he was forced by the owners to depart despite the terrible weather. He's gone into hiding since and refuses to talk to anyone about it.

I'll necomance this comment: The reason for the bad quality, is 1. weather. 2. bad recording from somewhere. 3. Austal that build the ship, deviated from blueprint and build the all the VHF equipment and it's circuit in only one of the hull, instead of both hull as required (they would work as backup for each other), that hull that hit land and broke off, was the hull the VHF was build into and was at this time in the video about to die.
