Theory Buzz, Episode 2 - Mahmood Mamdani: Neither Settler Nor Native
In the second episode of Theory Buzz Podcast, hosts Bassam Haddad and Libby Anker speak with Mahmood Mamdani on his recent book Neither Settler Nor Native: The Making and Unmaking of Permanent Minorities (Harvard University Press, 2020). The conversation features such topics as state-building through the function of the national and the colonial, how such processes categorized different populations, and how such categorizations created pretexts for state violence and control.
Theory Buzz Podcast is a monthly podcast that brings authors, books, theory, and the world together in a dynamic way. Away from both lofty pretenses and empiricist disdain, we cut through the jargon to elucidate important ideas and emphasize their significance to our moment. Every month, we hold a friendly but productive conversation with an author of a recent book in social theory, broadly conceived (don’t hold us to account on “recent”). Our conversations will address the history and trajectories of these works, while emphasizing their relevance to, and impact on, the worlds we live in.
Guest:
Mahmood Mamdani is professor and executive director of Makerere Institute of Social Research at Makerere University and the Herbert Lehman Professor of Government at Columbia University. Mamdani has taught at the University of Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania (1973-79), Makerere University in Uganda (1980-1993), and the University of Cape Town (1996-1999). Mahmood Mamdani was listed as one of the “Top 20 Public Intellectuals” by Foreign Policy (US) and Prospect (UK) magazine in 2008, and served as President of CODESRIA (Council for the Development of Social Research in Africa) from 1998 to 2002. Mamdani has written extensively on colonialism and post-colonialism. Among these are several books: Define and Rule, 2013; Citizen and Subject, 1996; Saviors and Survivors, 2009; Good Muslim, Bad Muslim, 2004; and When Victims Become Killers, 2001. His latest work is Neither Settler Nor Native: The Making and Unmaking of Permanent Minorities, Harvard, Belknap Press, 2020.
Hosts:
Elisabeth Anker is an Associate Professor of American Studies and Political Science at George Washington University. She is the author of Orgies of Feeling: Melodrama and the Politics of Freedom (Duke, 2014) and the forthcoming book Ugly Freedoms (Duke, 2022 expected). She is also co-editor of the journal Theory & Event, and a frequent contributor on international television and radio news. @libankerDC
Bassam Haddad is Director of the Middle East and Islamic Studies Program and Associate Professor at the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University. "US and UK support would drop like a rock if there were no counterterrorism threats". This is laughable. Why? Well because ISIS and al-Qaeda fight on the same side as the Saudis, who the US is selling millions of weapons to. Furthermore, Ansar Allah has been the only group capable of fighting the jihadists. They were so effective that they were reportedly working with the US, which is why Gen. Lloyd Austin was angry when Saudi launched its invasion. I would argue that US and UK support has nothing to do with "counterterrorism" and rather with an actual fear of a powerful Yemeni state which sits on the Bab El-Mandeb, one of the most important waterways in the world, and has control over its own resources.

Israel is becoming One state for many people. It has no choice.. the Arab’s demand it justly. Further than that, the whole Middle East is changing; the Americans are neglecting the Middle East and Israel is more pre occupied with Iran than with the Palestinians. Too many things are changing in the Middle East and in the upcoming years it will be more and more the Chinese and Russians that will play a role in the Middle East rather than the Americans. The Zionist state as we know it today will end mainly because the zionist idea is imploding from within because Israel has got too many competing societal interest (even amongst the Jews themselves) and the whole civilisation of the Israeli society is in utter disintegration. The end of Zionism is very close and it has nothing to do with any arab or Palestinian. It it has to do with the fact that the Israelis morally bankrupted their own Zionist dream because of many reasons not only their treatment of the non Jews in Israel but also because many factors including the magnitude of corruption and the mafia and enormously high crime rate within the political sphere and in every facet of the Israeli society, also because of the ways in which of Israeli Jews are treating their OWN Jewish population as well as other important factors inside of the state like rogue capitalism etc. The state is disintegrating and imploding from within due to a myriad of factors, full - stop ! * Also, currently ( 17 Dec 2021) - The Israeli army and the Israeli police are absolutely unable to control the mayhem, murders, organised crime and street violence in the south of Israel and on the periphery towns in the north (it is literally akin to the Wild West) Israel lost its credibility. Israel has effectively lost all the control over half of the country its only has control over the middle of the country such as tel aviv and Jerusalem and the middle part , the south and the north are absolutely not adhering to the laws and the regulations of the country. Essentially Israel is F’d and I really do not see that anything is about to change in the future. Too many of Israel’s population have become radicalised so nothing good will come of the division of the people inside of the country. ** In regards to the two state solution you are correct to say that the time has passed for that- which really stuffed up the hard line racist Zionists because now they are faced with what they despised the most, which is - ONE STATE FOR ALL OF ITS CITIZENS and so they have effectively LOST and will LOSE the state of Israel for the Jews ! * And again, this has nothing to do with any arabs or Palestinians but rather with the Jews’ own demise due to the mismanagement of their own Zionist ideas as well as the mismanagement of their own Israeli society.

When intelligent people look at the absurdities and futility of religion they often reject God, when in reality they should reject religion. It is religion that steals the identity of God's system and distorts it, while God's Way properly defines God, His System and mankind's position and role within that System. There is no religion the only System for all mankind is God's Way "Deen" a way of life intended to be a life of blissfulness without religions, myths, superstitions or satanic laws. You shall return to Him, observe Him, and uphold your commitments. Do not become idol-worshipers like those who change the way of life into ‘religion’, each sectarian is happy with what they have. 30:31-32 Follow those who do not ask from you any wage, they are guided. 36:21 If you follow the majority of the people on earth, they will divert you from the path of God. They only follow conjecture, and they only guess. 6:116 He has prescribed for you the same way of life enjoined upon Noah, and what is revealed herein, and what was decreed for Abraham, Moses and Jesus. You shall uphold the One way of life and not be divided. It is simply too difficult for the idolworshippers to accept what you advocate. God is the one who brings towards Him whomever He wills. He guides towards Himself those who return.42:13 O mankind, you shall serve your Lord who created you and those people before you that you might be observant. He is the one who made the earth habitable for you. He is the one who constructed the sky. He sends down water from the sky to produce fruits for your sustenance. Therefore, you are not to set up any idol next to God when you understand. 2:21.22

45:19 The great sociologist Max Weber made a distinction between the ethics of intention (what you want ultimately to happen) and the ethics of responsibility (what you know will happen in specific decisions). He also said that human life exists in the tension of these two ethics. Here Chomsky (in intention hard Left) opts for the pragmatic ethics of responsibility. It is an excellent example of what Weber was talking about in his teaching on human existence and the tension of the two kinds of ethics. The Left would do well to take this lesson to heart.

I seem to like this distinction. If I understand it correctly, however, doesn’t “the ethics of responsibility” resonate with the pragmatic moral precept that the litmus test of of whether a particular course of action is right is its workability? I’m not sure, but I have an inkling that this distinction and the philosophy of pragmatism are somehow related.
