The most pleasant thing about the movie is the lovely smile on Loretta Bell's face (the sheriffs wife played by Tess Harper) - she is the only person completely untouched and unaffected by all evil in the movie.

Many do a lot of good putting bad people away but in a way they are all bad because they rarely arrest the bad ones and much rarer still is arresting Po liticians when they break the law, which they do all the time.

amazing movie with powerful moral symbolism both in the film itself, and in discussions that came later... but "the truth" is never better hidden. That is a falsehood, and we cannot learn anything from accepting lies. So on that point you made about Zayus, I disagree. Good intentions are not an excuse to lie.

@mydogjesus I totally agree with you, it's not okay at all (this clip is part of a larger conversation so some context might be missing), in this part, I think we were just trying to understand his motives.

Hello guys! I love this movie! So much! I've watched every commentary video like yours I can find here on UA-cam and I thought I'd share a really interesting very subjective 'Easter egg' that I heard in another video that I had never considered before. But now that I've heard it, it strikes me as perfect, making me love the movie that much more! At the very end of the movie, where Calum walks through those double doors into the rave for the last time, and we see the door close after he goes through....when the doors come together again, the metal push plates on each door come together and to me kinda resembles a 'pause' button. This could be seen as a metaphor for how all the unprocessed emotions and unanswered questions have her kind of 'stuck' / paused, have kind of 'paused' her life in some ways and that part of her life is 'frozen in time' as if the pause button were pushed forever and she can't see past it. I dunno. I thought that was an amazing theory, subjective as it may be.

There's a couple great books I'd recommend checking out: 'The Power of Myth' by Joseph Campbell, and 'The Storytelling Animal' by Jonathan Gottschall. These books illustrate how stories (and films as vehicles for stories) are vital in how we build civilization and our own psyches. The statement "it's just a movie" usually comes from a place of seeing movies as being mere entertainment. But if you study the history of story, including film, you see that these stories go far beyond than just being entertainment value, especially science fiction, which as a genre is seeking to explore what it means to be human.

Thanks for the comment! One great nonfiction book I recommend in this episode is called 'The Storytelling Animal' by Jonathan Gottschall. It explores the psychological and socio-cultural benefits of fiction. In my experiences, people tend to prefer one over the other (fiction or non-fiction). I hope you enjoy this episode, and feel free to check out my episode on fiction if you want to hear some of the ways it too can have a valuable place in our lives. All the best to you! :)
