      I know it’s been a while since I last posted, and I appreciate you asking about it. I’ve been meaning to create more videos for a while now, but as you might know, producing good-quality content takes time-way more than I’d like! Between managing a community of investors and traders on Patreon, keeping up with my own trading, and everything in between, finding that extra time for videos has been a bit of a challenge. That being said, I do have plans to post more consistently soon. I may have to go with a bit more raw content without all the fancy edits but rest assured, the info will still be just as solid! Thanks again for your patience, and I look forward to posting more content soon!

    I realized exactly this a couple months ago. All the negativity around these leveraged ETFs comes from the volatility, as if they've forgotten that we all know perfectly well how to smooth out volatility--diversification across asset classes, rebalancing, and dollar cost averaging. It's so weird. In fact, rebalancing even thrives on uncorrelated volatility because it uses the other asset class to naturally buy the dips and take profits on the spikes.

    • @RothToRiches
      @RothToRiches 3 місяці тому

      Great point! I think many people overlook how effective these strategies can be. Diversification and rebalancing really do help manage the risks associated with leveraged ETFs. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

      Absolutely, I'd be happy to clarify that for you. Personally, when it comes to dollar-cost averaging (DCA) in a strategy, I invest as soon as possible. Over the long term, the timing of these additions makes little difference. In my experience, the sooner, the better.

    I did some extensive back testing on this strategy in portfolio visualizer. I had to use similar funds that mirror the sp500 and bonds to get it to go as far back to 1978 and then applied the 3x daily leverage so its not spot on, but in the ball park. I used VFINX and VWESX (large cap stock index and long term corporate bonds respectively. Attributing a 5% drag for costs (considering higher interest rates in the 1980s and the lower in the 2010s, and using Libor as the formula), this strategy return 26% CAGR from 1978 to now (mid 2024). The one thing I learned through various testing is that the best results come from only placing a trade bi-monthly and this factor changes the CAGR by as much as 10% per year on average depending on what signal time frame you stack it up against. The reasoning is that a lot of times the market can move under the 200 day moving average and trigger a false signal meaning that it isn't entering a bear market, but just a correction before resuming a bull run which would cause you to miss out of a lot of extra gains. If you trade at the signal all of those trades will cause you to lose in whipsaw action not to mention it creates more short term taxable events for your income taxes. The 2 month window allows for much of those false signals to be filtered out and even though it allows for more drawdown in recessions, the extra market gains from the false signals outweighs it, and by a lot too. This is the one thing I noticed that paper "systemic leverage for the long run" didn't touch on.

    • @RothToRiches
      @RothToRiches 3 місяці тому

      I appreciate your thorough explanation of the strategy. It's clear that the 200-day Simple Moving Average (SMA) can lead to too many whipsaws. That's why I prefer using the monthly chart with a 10-month SMA. This approach greatly reduces false signals and helps mitigate getting caught in volatile market conditions.

    SOXL. Was just back testing rebalancing with SOXL and with CSWC (bond replacement), TPL (oil stock) and a basket of the fab five OEM stocks. (These trade at low multiples with high margins) I think the semiconductor industry will not stop growing even in a recession there will be demand driving new growth. The portfolio is split 25% between the four groups and rebalanced annually. Drawdowns never lasted long in the backtest. Dividends eventually produced enough income that drawdowns weren't really a concern. The rest of the CASH I keep. Over long term, I can make 3x more money and so I can keep 3x the cash and have reserves on hand.

    It wasn't until half way through the video when it was finally mentioned that energy costs went up 4X's. in the early 70's and even more later in the decade. Could it be that this massive supply shock played a much bigger role than monetary policy?

    • @RothToRiches
      @RothToRiches 5 місяців тому

      Absolutely, you can't ignore the huge spike in energy costs in the 70s when you're looking at the economy back then. It's pretty fascinating to see how a shock to something as basic as energy can shake up the whole economy. It doesn't just bump up the prices of things; it also messes with decisions about monetary policies. It really shows how everything in the economy is connected, like dominoes - you knock one over, and a whole bunch can follow. Understanding this complex web is key to understanding why policymakers have such a tough time during these crises. Thanks for pointing that out; it really shows why we need to look at historical economic events from a wide angle to fully understand what they mean.

    You can 'enhance' your position and play on implied volitatialty by both selling DOTM puts, and selling DOTM calls. If the fund is at $50, sell a long dated put at $25 ( a position you'd be willing to double ) and sell a long dated call i.e. $80. (If you're willing to cap your potential growth. And also willing to double your position if the index drops. Both are bullish, and should your call get exercised you earn both thr premium at the $80 share value. Which likely makes it an $88 per share? In this scenerio your puts expire worthless and add to your profits. In the inverse, should the stock drop to $23 you sold call options which would expire worthless, and now, you've agreed to double your position at the $25 strike. Because you hedged both positions as long as you have the cash to cover the increase in shares you simply lock in the lower dollar-cost-averaged price thanks to your DOTM put contracts which you'd sold and must cover.

      Your points are valid and I appreciate you bringing them to light. It's critical to remember that past performance isn't always indicative of future results, and the volatile nature of leveraged ETFs can certainly pose a significant risk to investors. Diversification and a well-thought-out investment strategy become key in navigating such uncertainties. Engaging with a financial advisor can also provide personalized insights tailored to individual risk tolerance and financial goals, helping to mitigate potential pitfalls. So while it's important to stay aware of potential risks, it's equally important to not let fear drive decision-making and instead approach investing with caution and mindfulness. Overall, understanding the intricacies of leveraged ETFs and being proactive in managing investments can lead to a more successful and secure financial future.

When a long ETF falls, its short twin goes up so I simply change horses frequently. Fabulous winning strategy in any trending market.

      Thank you for sharing your strategy! It's clear that you've developed a finely tuned approach to navigating the volatile world of 2x and 3x ETFs. Utilizing Guppy Multiple Moving Averages for charting, coupled with Dollar Cost Averaging, sounds like a solid technique to maximize gains while managing risks effectively. I appreciate your insight into the dynamic shift between long and short positions based on trend analysis-it definitely highlights the importance of adaptability in trading. Keep up the fantastic work!

    BITX is 2x Bitcoin etf. Up 40% in a week. 100 in a month.

      This is interesting. I'm looking into buying BITX soon. I think buying at 23 seems like a great entry point, if I get the opportunity. Then, if BTC makes 4x from that point, BITX will make around 8x if I understand it right.

    I love this video and others you made on the topic!! Why do you use the sma of upro and not the actual index (Spx)? I wonder if using the upro average may distort results in some way. Do you know of any platform where you can set up this rules to play on automatically? Is the 10 months the same as a 120 days sma? Why do you choose 10 months and not 200days sma as in another video you made? Thanks!!!

      UPRO aligns more closely with leveraged ETPs, which tends to work well when trading 3x leveraged ETPs. If you experiment enough, you'll probably discover several other assets to use for the SMA. The platforms I know best for what you're looking for are TradeStation, possibly TradeView (connected to a broker like IBKR), and maybe some other third-party APIs that can connect to your broker. There are around 21 trading days per month on average, totaling about 252 trading days annually. The SMA can be based on daily, weekly, or monthly intervals. Therefore, a 10-month SMA is approximately equivalent to a 210-day SMA, which is similar to the well-known 200-day SMA. The 10-month SMA and 200-day SMA are kind of interchangeable, so either one could do the trick. However, the 10th SMA might save you from some whipsaw trades as it's tied to a monthly SMA. Personally, I find it easier to track than the SMAs based on days. But hey, everyone's different, so I'm giving you both options. Always make sure to do your research and figure out what suits you best. The ideas shared in the videos might be helpful but think of them as a starting point. You can build on them to find a strategy that matches your risk tolerance.

    Could you describe a strategy using a stop loss (to not ride the drawdown all the way down)?

    • @RothToRiches
      @RothToRiches 8 місяців тому

      In my experience, stop losses tend to be more detrimental than beneficial. Despite the allure of different stop-loss mechanisms, whether they are simple or exotic, they often fail to deliver the expected results when put to the test. While they may sound promising in theory, real-world outcomes rarely align with initial expectations. In general, the situation unfolds in a way where you aim to preserve your capital by using a stop loss, yet you find yourself exiting the trade for a loss while the signal, whatever it may be, is still indicating that you should still be in the trade. And then what? What will catalyze to re-enter the trade? This is where the challenge lies. There is no systematic, rule-based approach to facilitate a re-entry because the strategy trigger typically suggests that you should still be in the trade, except the stop-loss prompted you to exit. Moreover, stop losses can also be psychologically damaging. They can cause you to second-guess your decisions and lead to emotional trading, which often results in even more losses. However, this doesn't mean that stop losses should never be used. They can be a useful tool when used correctly and in combination with other risk management techniques. But in my experience, that generally applies to day trading more than tactical investing. However, the reason why many successful traders and investors, including myself, refrain from using stops is that they often dampen returns while only providing a false sense of "capital protection." While it may sound appealing in theory, this approach fails to deliver the risk-adjusted returns that one would expect from a supposedly prudent trading strategy. Why not give it a shot and try out some simple backtesting? It's a surefire way to dive into the nitty-gritty and see how things play out in various market scenarios. There's so much to learn from backtesting. Give it a go.

    Thanks! for the super clear explanation of the platforms. Need your advice (sorry for the length of this - hoping you can help!) Thanks in advance! :) My money is at Interactive Brokers. I'm in the US. Currently using IBKR Lite, but willing to switch to Pro if needed. But first... I want to be able to trade directly from whatever charting program I use. I want to be able to seem my positions, orders, stops, etc. on that charting program. I want efficient trade execution. I'd like to be able to just DRAG SL's and limit orders on the chart and have it modify the orders. I've been using the Trading View charting program a lot (and I love it!) to analyze potential stock buys, utilize their huge library of indicators, etc. I find the TradingView interface so much smoother and more powerful than the TWS Desktop. TWS Desktop is really hard to look at for me - seems poorly organized, the fonts are difficult to look at, etc. Very messy screen design IMO. But only been trying to adapt to it for a month, so maybe it just takes time? I've tried the IBKR Online Portal a bit, and noticed it says "powered by TV" which gives me some hope - and it does have the smooth feel of TV - great! BUT, for example, when I click on the Indicators tab at the top, it doesn't have access to the huge and awesome library of TV indicators. (And many other weaknesses compared to full TV). I notice there is also a new IBKR desktop platform in Preview / beta mode. Is that because everyone is complaining about the poor interface of TWS? Seems strange that they are starting from scratch but I assume it's because it's written in an entirely new language. Regardless, my question is: have you used it? Do you recommend I try it based on the above discussion?

      @RothToRiches 8 місяців тому

      No, I haven't used the Beta or any other TradeView product except for a few instances when I needed simple charting in a pinch. I use different brokers for different reasons, but when it comes to charting, I always count on TradeStation. Its capabilities are broader than TradeView, and I've been a loyal TradeStation user for over 20 years without feeling the need to try other options. I can't make any promises, but there are TradeStation APIs out there that might help with compatibility with IBKR. I can't think of any specific company names right now, but a quick search should give you the results you're looking for. Hopefully, that'll give you some more ideas to think about.

      @@RothToRichesI do need a really good stock screener that is customizable through code and a good programmer to code some screens and some backtests for me. IDEAS? Thanks in advance!!

      @RothToRiches 7 місяців тому

      For a top-of-the-line choice packed with extensive stock screening options, Trade Ideas is my go-to after using it for about 14 years. It's a premium standalone product that, in my view, excels as a real-time screener without requiring any coding. If you prefer coding capabilities, TradeStation's Radar Screen is incredibly versatile and can fulfill any request you have.
