Old school 12v cars with less computer control devices use either simple internal regulator rectifiers or external regulator rectifiers either way alternators were NOT designed to charge at idle, regulators normally turn ON at 100-200 rpms ABOVE idle..old cars are LESS sensitive to voltage spikes where's newer cars that are all computer control with a plethora of sensors, relays, switches, monitors, triggers are HIGHLY sensitive to voltage spikes therefore are INTERNALLY REGULATED by ECM / ECUs NOT to charge over 14.4 volts at any rpm... Volts, amperage, input, output all very do to temperature, rpm, setting on regulator rectifier, quality control tolerances of parts, builder, execution... A 1/10 of a volt difference can cause check engine lights & sensitive sensors to cause electrical systems to shut down or go into protect mode in late model EFI post OBII cars
