There's a comic on Existential Comics, the first one, that focuses on the viewpoint of a man in a society where the teleporter has been invented and is used commonly. This man is deeply focused on the idea that the teleporter merely copies the person and kills the original. While bar crawling the man is able to meet the inventor the device itself and argues with him. The inventor doesn't deny that the teleporter works similar to how the man envisions it, but argues that all humans are is emergent patterns of atoms that swap all the time and leaves the man with the final word of "...If you are still 'you' after an interruption of consciousness, going to sleep, then you will still be you after the teleporter." This does nothing to comfort the man, but in fact makes them believe that going to sleep is just the same as dying and a whole new person waking up in your stead. The man's life spirals out of control, acting on his most selfish desires purely on the logic that his time on earth is as limited as his body's ability to stay awake (from the man's perspective the 'him' that talked to the inventor died soon after due to accidentally falling asleep despite his efforts not to). Eventually he is homeless and destitute, and on the edge of committing suicide. However, he pauses before doing so. If a new 'self' would take his place after sleeping, what right did he have to take away their ability to live, he would be robbing his 'selves' of life, no different than a murderer. He steps off the edge and resolves to take the first steps forward for a better life, not for himself, but for the 'him' that would take his place. Resolved to start over, he decides to make use of the teleporter. Bojack eventually gets better. It's a long journey, but he does take the steps to get better. And unfortunately that life, the life where Bojack could be a good person and genuinely feel good about himself, was murdered by the actions of his past self.

People should realize that both Secretariat and Todd aren’t actually giving good advice at all. This scene was before Todd got his relationship with his mother, his life, and his sexuality understood. It was a huge projection onto Bojack about his own issues, but highlighted bojack as the subject, most of the issues being common (drugs and video games, abusive vs abandoning parents, etc.). People take it to be a real eye opener because they are like “So right it actually is all Bojack!” but a ton of it wasn’t; and the show clearly explains that. With Todd’s life, however, they do explain that it was all Todd.
