    These may cost more than most players can afford so they buy $10-12 a pair ones and install them... But some adjustment may be needed so tha the 2 C clamps per barrel are loosened barely and the nut grooves are barely widened to allow strings to glide smoothly.... Any lubricant can be used with a toothpick to allow wtrings to sld in the nit slots smoothly.

      I have tried soaking the timber overnight before bending and found it can cause problems. It seems to weaken the bonds between the grains, leading to the grain having the tendency to open up to a crack during bending.

    What about the other 4 strings?

    • @AusLuthierSupplies
      @AusLuthierSupplies 12 днів тому

      Good question! If the saddle is a fixed shape/radius, as in an acoustic guitar or a guitar with a tunematic, for example a Gibson, the middle 4 strings will automatically be set once you set the outer 2 strings. If all 6 saddles have height adjustment, as on most Fender electric guitars, you will need to adjust all 6 saddle heights. Each string should step up in equal increments.

      @@AusLuthierSupplies Interesting to know. I never knew about Tunematic. What you explained in your response is what you didn't show in the video. Why stop at the E strings? When i look down the neck to see if the frets are uniformly spaced, I see the first fret sticking out noticeably. Would turning the truss 360 help to straighten that? I have good action on the guitar but after weeks of adjustments the high E string is just a tiny bit sharp at the overtone octave. I haven't seen any advice anywhere on this. Is it too radical an idea?

    Things I do not like about the GT1996 is the 5mm arm and the huge studs, which make it too close to a humbucker rout. I play an Axis same trem but 6mm arm. With proprietary fine tuners and studs.

    Fender uses A, Gibson uses B. I prefer B because it allows me to clean up a 1 channel over-driven amp before the volume drops. I noticed that my volume drops too suddenly on my Strat's.

    Calling TUSQ material "plastic" is NOT correct. If anything, TUSQ is most likely some sort of ceramic material.

  • @jerbear1601
    @jerbear1601 Місяць тому

    TUSQ is easily the best nut material to use. I just replaced one on a Strat style guitar with a preslotted TUSQXL and all I had to do was sand down the height until the first fret clearance was right when holding down the strings at the third fret and I was golden with 10-46 strings. The manufacturer used NuBone which was a version of this material but they only filed the slots down poorly instead of sanding the nut height and got terrible results and deep slots robbing the tone from the instrument. The slots only need to be deep enough to keep the wound strings in so they don't pop out ( about half way or so ).

    I have a problem where the saddle on the low E is so far back that the string sits perpendicularly, as opposed to be slanted at an angle. It's the only position where the intonation is good. Is that gonna 'cause any problems? Would a modern style bridge help?

    • @AusLuthierSupplies
      @AusLuthierSupplies Місяць тому

      It's quite common for this to happen, the saddle needs to be wound back that it's in line with the hole the string comes out of. It's not ideal but it usually doesn't cause any issues.

    I thought you are supposed to put a capo on the first fret when measuring the string height at the 12th fret. Does it matter? Which is the right way?

    • @AusLuthierSupplies
      @AusLuthierSupplies 3 місяці тому

      Either way will work but it will change the desired measurements at the 12th fret if you use the capo so just factor that in if you use one. Using the capo at the 1st fret will lower the strings slightly at the 12th fret so the measurements for the action at the 12th fret will be less than without the capo.

    • @AusLuthierSupplies
      @AusLuthierSupplies 4 місяці тому

      You would need to find the right style of left-handed tuners, using the guidance of this video. In terms of the left-handed strung right-handed complication, you would just need to check if the hole for the string is different for the tuners that fit thinner strings, and if so fit these in the correct arrangement. Also if the tuners are staggered that would complicate it so better to get a non-staggered set.

      @AusLuthierSupplies 4 місяці тому

      That's a good one! Maybe we can extend the list in the future and include it. For those interested for now, each nut slot should be filed with a nut file of a gauge that is just a little bigger than the string. If the slot is too wide the string can move around and buzz, if the slot is too narrow the string can bind or not sit all the way down.

    Is bunya pine a viable option for a classical soundboard? There seems to be no shortage of bunya topped steel strings, but not many bunya nylon strings - any reason for that?

    • @AusLuthierSupplies
      @AusLuthierSupplies 4 місяці тому

      We aren't aware of Bunya Pine being used on classical guitars, though it's possible it has been. It could work well but someone would need to build some using it and test it. It's a bit stiffer than the traditionally used German Spruce. Classical guitars are more sensitive than acoustic guitars so less varieties of soundboard timbers work well for classicals than steel strings unfortunately.
