A Tragedy in the Dover Railyard
In the quiet rows of Pine Hill Cemetery, countless untold stories lie beneath the stones - tales of triumph, tragedy, and remarkable courage. Today, we uncover one such story from exactly 120 years ago that touched the heart of Dover.
On a crisp October afternoon in 1904, 12-year-old James Cornell, son of a respected local police officer, set out for what should have been a simple childhood adventure. What unfolded instead was a testament to extraordinary bravery in the face of unimaginable circumstances - a story that moved the community to tears, yet has faded into the shadows of time.
In this short episode of "Dover Unknown," we share the tragic tale of young James's final day, a reminder that behind every headstone lies a story waiting to be remembered.

History in a Minute: I.B Williams and United Tanners
Переглядів 4014 годин тому
Sure, Dover once had a bit of a reputation for fetidity. Back then, it was "Portsmouth by the Sea, Dover by the Smell." That’s thanks to the huge downtown tannery that filled the air - and our history - for decades. But those days (and the smell) are long gone. In our latest episode of "History in a Minute," we look back at the leather and tannery powerhouses of I.B. Williams and United Tanners...

If you want to join others, local viewing events include the Dover Public Library's eclipse view...
Dover's Thanksgiving Mural and the Woman Who Created It

On the second floor of Dover City Hall, you'll find what is often called Dover's Thanksgiving mural, a 30-foot-wide panorama of Dover's first European settlers and the region's indigenous people. Many people walk by the mural without a glance, and fewer still know its nearly 80-year history. So, on this Thanksgiving, we wanted to share the story of Dover's Thanksgiving mural and the woman who p...

We didn't want this day, June 10, to pass by without acknowledging the terrible tragedy that claimed the life of a Dover boy, Philip Michaud, and severely injured Edward Dionne, both of whom were heaved over the Cochecho Falls while tempting fate at the edge of the dam in 1916. This sad story was originally intended as a longer episode of Dover Unknown. Still, with that work not complete, we wa...

    Very cool channel and content, im loving all the local history! I actually metal detected and dug a "Knights of Pythias" belt plate near a cellar hole in Rollinsford last year and you can see it in episode 40 of our channel! Keep up the great work!

    Very well done, I just recently metal detected and dug a Boston Maine Railroad bag seal in Newington. My only suggestion is the music volume in the beginning and end is twice the level as the commentary and blows your ear drums out when it switches. Great job otherwise, keep up the great work!

    The greatest, smartest and most patriotic president that the stupid Republican Party DIDN'T CHOOSE was Pat Buchanan. But the stupid Republican Party chose a "dumbhead" who was too globalist, too kosher and too free-traitorous for me to vote for. Pat - not George Dumb head - got my write-in in 2000.

    I’m quite sure Lucy’s picture was found along with Booth’s possessions but was most certainly not in his hand. He was involved in a frantic effort to save his life and escape at the time he was shot.

    • @madeindover3845
      @madeindover3845 Рік тому

      Thanks, David. Lucy's photo was one of five photos of various women Booth had with him when he died. There are conflicting reports about whether he was holding a photo in the barn after he was shot to death. We'll probably never know for sure. But, for what it's worth, of the five women's photos he kept with him, Lucy was the only woman he had been engaged to at the time.

    We have a family log home, part of an association, sitting back 200 yards from Lovewell Pond.We share a piece of shorefront that is less than a 100 feet from a point of land where Lovewell and his men saw the solitary Indian from a mile away after he had fired his gun, Lovewell and his 33 men dropped their packs and rushed to where that Indian had been not far from the pond. They fired at the Indian who then shot back wounding Lovewell and another member with small shot. The indian was shot and killed soon after and scalped on the spot. Captain Lovewell and his men went to grab their packs 10 minutes away and the Abenaki Chief and 50 warriors were waiting amongst the packs in ambush and killed Lovewell and 7 others very quickly. The remaining 26 men headed back in the direction towards where they killed the first Indian towards the present day association of about 20 houses on or near Lovewell Pond. They crossed a small brook and next, hid behind rocks at mouth of Fight Brook feeding into Lovewell Pond, for cover which resulted in gun fight that started at 11:00 am till dark. There is a small present day home sitting on a small hill supported by those rocks. In the morning 21 men left for their small makeshift fort next to Ossipee Lake 22 miles South and 5 more died on the way from wounds.

    Tommy's first, and my favorite recording of this song, was on the "CB & TM Sing of the Sea" album. Recorded for Columbia, around 1968, it featured Liam Clancy singing harmony and playing guitar. I felt it was the best cut on a mediocre album.
