Liked the video but bee very careful about the screen on the set net you need Warter behind it it had a massive gap form the bank and was nearly going over the top of the screen at times ❤
Hi Harvey - you're dead right. I checked the regs and this is a requirement specific to the West Coast, so I guess I imported that bad habit from the east... I was thinking that we might get an aluminum frame made up for next year that holds the net and one end of the screen in place so it can just be pulled in/adjusted from the shore as the tide comes in. It's a pain in the (wet) arse having to pull it in when its too deep for my waders.
Hope you know you ain’t allowed water behind your screens on sock nets
Thanks Fraser - well spotted.
nice wee trout
Nice looking fish
Why do you not do full videos any more ?
Hi Harvey - I do, but I thought I would put up a short each day as it happens to see how they go (the full video for this trip should come out in the next week or so). Also, for unsuccessful trips fishing, its quicker for me to put a short up for those that are interested, rather than going to the effort of editing a full video that won't get many views.
@@fiordlander yeah i can understand that sometimes a unsuccessful fishing trip is good though as that’s reality we went out on the west coast for two day only got a pound a day but on the last morning we got 6kg could of got 10 but had to go home just blind scooping in the mouth we stay at Haast lodge and whitebait on the waita river
@@Harveyshuntingandfishing Nice work. Were you using a cloth scoop net like mine, or a metal mesh job down in the surf?
very good a rewarding holiday for you but on the west coast it rains and rains🌧☔
Yep - and it did again this year.
What was in the sock?
Whitebait - but not as many as I would like…
@@fiordlander Same on the east coast brother, worst season so far in living memory
When's the full video coming?
Hopefully a couple of days after I finish filming the trip.
Hey bud when you doing ya okuru trip
Not until October this year
We been baiting it all season nothing happening yet. 2 mouths at the moment 1 at the hapuka and 1 at the okuru . Okuru seems to be fishing better at the of the 2 👍
Hope some turns up soon - might see you there.
What mouse lure is that?
It's one of these: www.marine-deals.co.nz/rapala-lures/savage-gear-3d-rad-rat-topwater-lure-6-5in-brown
Good to see your videos again 👍
You Southlanders certainly are exposed to some cold weather. I love the Westcoast fishing, and always have an excuse to go over as I have grandchildren living just north of Hokitika. One thing about Westcoast whitebait is they are larger than the eastcoast fish, and taste much better.
Hi mate, what's a good way to get in touch? Am in Manapouri for a week and need some advice 😉
at least ya got a fritter
Well done on the catch was hoping while you were there would be a run on for you guys to get into. Sounds like the coast has been a bit patchy this year hopefully you manage to get out a few more times before the season ends
They must be difficult to fillet 😂
hope they still taste just like i remember
Legendary 😂
Dam there goes this spot well done
Great video looking forward to seeing how you go over the season. One suggestion have you thought about taping a plastic jar on the net to make it easier and faster to empty I have one on my scoop drill a heap of holes in lid when you cut bottom off I use fine sandpaper to smooth off where you cut
Their almost extinct. Leave them all-seeing for a few years ya plebs 😂😂😂😂
good vid mate, first spring in the South Island everyones talking about white baiting so good to see how it goes... The coastal erosion is nuts aye, currently out on the West Coast incredible how much land has been taken.
Great content mate 👍
Good on ya for making the effort.
Thanks for the video I always enjoy them the music is nice scenery is awesome and your lack of white bait is very familiar to me 😀
Algd
Great vlog matey cheers
No worries.
Love your vids mate I was down there then not much happening then but last three days of November got 45 pound at mouth in surf
Nice haul. It will be interesting to see how the mouth shapes up this year.
What the go with the lodge....? Do you need to book ahead...? I like your boat..!
Cheers. Yep - you can book online - www.waitutu.co.nz/contact--booking.html
You can’t drive down there now end of road has been washed in the sea,sea blow out gravel bank
Could make for an interesting season...
boy be swinging that rod like a sword
Let those soft baits sink right down to the bottom then really slowly retrieve just so the soft bait is above the weeds, you'll catch alot of fish with that technique especially in lake gunn
Thanks for the tip, BC. We've had good success on Lake Gunn against where the cliffs drop straight into the lake. I guess the fish just cruise up and down there all day long waiting food to drop in...
Much trout in that river?
We didn't actually take the rods, but I expect that there would be decent numbers as the flow is relatively stable given it drains a reasonably big lake.
Thanks for sharing fella. Nice vid & great to see you out there doing it with Max. Once he catches his first Trout off the Kayak he'll be away. Cheers
Well, hopefully. But he's taken a bit of a shine to fishing off the inflatable these days.
Hello, thanks for posting your videos. How long is the trip to the Lodge? I'm taking my Solar 470 down with my kids so looking at amount of fuel to take. Cheers Pete
Wasn't really keeping track of time - I would say about half an hour on the lake each way (although more if it is rougher) and an hour or a bit more each way on the river. From memory, we used less than 50 liters of fuel, but took 80 liters with us. Remember to let the two commercial operators know that you will be on the river, and to sign in (and out) in the intentions book on foreshore at Teal Bay Hut before heading down the river. Good luck.
Hi thanks for the video I enjoyed it. How long did it take to get to the lodge, I assume you launched at Lake Haruroko? I have the same boat as yourself. Cheers
About an hour on the river, 20 minutes on the lake - although our boat is not the fastest unit around...
Whats the boat?
Solar 470 (bloody Russian) - a fully inflatable unit powered by a 50hp outboard jet unit.
I caught a nice Rainbow from the SHORE on my second or third cast. So, one can catch them from the shore!
Nice work - which part of the shore were you fishing from?
I went over the Coast with a mate in early October to fish the mouth of the Hokitika River, and only caught 1 kg in a week. By all accounts the East Coast fished better that the West this season, with some great runs in the The Waimak.
That's what I heard too.
Looks like a good spot for set net
I actually went into the Invercargill Hunting & Fishing shop to get a material net to take down the river, but it was going to be $500+ between getting the net and the 3m go-by, so I left it (for next year)...
Nice work I'm itching watching this 😆
Nice vid mate. Any chance can get a vid on jet unit set up please and thank you. And was there much pig rooting around when you were there?
Cheers. Didn’t see any rooting - not that I was looking for it. Plenty of deer sign on the sand.
Hey great video, did you end up going for the oct fishing comp ?
Yep. We all caught one. Didn’t take much footage though - might chuck it up as a ‘short’. Didn’t win the boat either…
@@fiordlander oh nice
Hi there another great video fishing an isolated river. Do you have an outboard or jet unit to get access
Jet unit - you wouldn't want to take a regular outboard down that river!
just found your channel great stuff just subscribed :)
Cheers.
Hi there. Have you ever tried scooping upstream. I have no boat, so wondering if ok upriver. Thanks
You can, but there is often better scooping opportunities down at the mouth were the set netters can't go. That being said, there can be places upstream where it is only possible to fish with a scoop net. There were few places on the Grey River (Greymouth) on the rocks that use to be (and probably still are) hotly contested for scoopers due to the way the whitebait runs up the river and comes in close to those rocks...
@@fiordlander Hi there. Thanks for the reply. I had a terrible season on the Aorere. I have always wanted to have a fish in Westland, so next season, God willing, I will head down there. Probably like you do for a week or so. Keep up the videos. They are great
Good stuff - might see you there next year.
Are you going to do some trout fishing videos
Absolutely. We never stopped going out over the last year - I just took a break from editing the videos that we shot, so none got put up on UA-cam. There is a backlog of videos to do - we have trout fishing footage from Lake Te Anau (different trips to North Fiord and the head of the lake), Lake Gunn, Lake Ada (Milford Track), North Mavora and Lake Paringa coming soonish.
Great video glad you got to enjoy a week away and pick up a few feeds of whitebait look forward to when your next video comes out
beautiful ,,,, many trout or kahawai about
Didn't see any, not that we were fishing.
What’s the definition of set when talking about setgear
I believe it is any fishing gear that is fixed in place (i.e. not moving).
Always enjoy your adventures,thanks
