Thanks for the video! Many people, including my self, did not know really anything about the depot until your videos.
awesome video!!!! Thanks for making this.
@jasonmanderscheid8718 It's amazing the buildings were determined to be in good shape and the contamination has been removed.
Spent some time there as a Reservist. We drove in and out of the bomb crater as a challenge. Huge tree in the bottom of it didn't even poke out the top back in the early 2000's Did night driver training there also. Moonless night and it was chaos but couldn't harm anything at 5 mph. Fond memories of the wildlife and peace.
@@Sarge395 I think you are referring to the crater created when 80,000 land mines detonated at the same time in an igloo in 1948.
@@thespecialistt215 Yes, that is the one. Never found the doors. Can't find images of the crater
I have one of the original photos. See youtube short video: WW2 era 80,000 anti-tank mines detonated in magazine igloo
I was under the impression that the savanna army depot was a wildlife reserve. Thank you for the video. As a kid I had an uncle who worked at the Savanna army depot. I never knew what he did there.
It is mostly wildlife preserve; however, railroad leases some of the land and there are businesses there.
Dude… nice
Thanks!
The closure of the base was a major blow to the local economy. Over the next 17 years I kept hearing about various plans for redevelopment. One of the first I remember was supposedly to develop the place into a large server farm. A similar facility nearby is\was the former Green River Ordinance Plant west of Amboy, IL. It's another sprawling, overgrown area that closed after WW2. If major development dosen't transform the facility, Green River's current condition could be the future of Savanna AD.
The server farm development project fell through as there was a issue with financing the cost of running fiber optic cables to the igloos even though the Bunker Town Signs are still being displayed. It wouldn't have lasted anyway as now you have Cloud Services like Amazon Web Services and Azure and they wouldn't have been able to compete with them. The igloos were designed to keep the contents in and everything else out so they would have had to drill through the steel reinforced concrete. Last time I was there a few years ago a Trucking Company was using some of the buildings and someone or some business bought the Headquarters building and I saw large amounts of cameras with some being on 60 to 80 foot poles, almost looked like something the CIA or NSA would be housed at. Savanna is pretty much a ghost town compared to what it was. If it were not for the 2 manufacturing companies in Savanna with one being Elkay which makes the water fountains that almost every corporate and public building uses it would probably be nothing other than a spot where tourists travel through. I see Elkay just made their millionth fountain at the Savanna plant.
@@thespecialistt215 Without revealing too much about my identity, I was involved with an attempt at development in Savanna a number of years ago. I'll just say there needed to be more connection between the remaining industry and community leadership. Like the Depot, Savanna has a lot of potential. But its just not being used. Even more than the Depot, Savanna has the infrastructure for success- A navigatable river, multiple heavy rail lines, and numerous highways. Concerning other "strategic" organizations operating in the area, I've long heard that Blackwater-Xe operated a base in the backcountry to the east. If that's the case, I'm surprised that the PMC didn't make more use of the former base. Finally, I look forward to watching your video on the base being a type of "Area51". Anyone who has lived long enough in the area has heard their own tales. There's definitly enough room and isolation out there for some of it to be true.
Your story about the man in the black Nissan truck struck a nerve for me . I live local also and we would always visit out there as teens (I still do to this day actually) but anyhow it was probably late 2017 early 2018 . (That gate was in place) and we were out there abkut 8:30-9:00 at night and when we got out there we pulled in the parking lot and killed the lights to sit for a few minutes . That black nissan truck with two guys in it came racing by . Opened that gate and blasted off again I’m assuming looking for us since with the lights off in an army green jeep at night we were pretty well invisible. It’s just nice to know I’m not crazy and at that point it was till guarded
Yes I had driven all the way down that road almost once a year since 2009 but that one afternoon in October 2017 they were blocking the road. It was strange since I never even saw anyone in the years before and he was wearing a black fleece jumpsuit. After some research I found that you can buy that at Walmart. He was not very friendly and was watching me while I parked. I was driving a rented RAV4 with New York plates and if I had to do it over again would have kept driving and pushed his driver door shut. When I got back home I called the Carroll County Sheriff and they said they didn't know about it and what they were doing wasn't legal. The issue was that part of the depot is in Jo Davis County and not Carroll County So I called the Jo Davis County Sheriff and was told not to worry about it but they were not aware of it. Eventually I called the Wildlife Official and he eventually admitted he gave them permission to park there but they could not legally block the road. He stated someone had built a new 10,000 square foot building that they were mostly using to store unexploded grenades from the grenade pit that took 2 years to clean up. When I parked there and just stayed a short time I saw 3 or 4 cars drive down the road with single males in them so I think there was people working there at that building. He also stated and I don't remember if it was that specific building but some of the businesses have security open carrying long arms patrolling on the property. He also stated there was many buildings at the end of that road. Another thing is back then if you noticed most of the workers there have Iowa plates on their vehicles.
With all the history out there it’s a shame they are putting in an rv park but have the back half closed off due to “unexploded ordnances” . Makes ya wonder if that’s even true . If so how can they put an rv park out there . If it’s not true then what are they really doing on the back part of the land . Half tempted to run the gravel road along the bluff . That’s about the only legal way to get close and high enough to see anything back there anymore until the leaves and grasses come back into bloom
It is a super fund site. You would be crazy to put a RV park there for liability reasons. One summer they hired some high school kids to dig in that area I forgot what the reason was and they all got real sick. From what I read recently they are cleaning up the mustard gas in the ground present.
I am glad you mentioned this. I never thought about it when it happened but the vehicles were driving toward the location in the late afternoon and not away from it. They were working at night. The black vehicles and black outfits along with that area is where the ammunition manufacturing and processing was done as well as the function testing. Lock and Dam Number 12 is also there. Some of the buildings are underground as they would be used as shelters during storms and for safety reasons(electrical storms, explosions and fires etc.). Most likely didn't want to be seen by satellite or reduce the chances of being seen.
Great video and place to fly.
Glad you enjoyed it
I got one of your stickers at the expo looks great on my AIR2 hard case Brother. Nice footage
Thanks. There was a lot of good swag in many of the booths.
I was in the 516th stationed at Savannah Army Depot in 1970 and 1971. To my knowledge, what we did, and everything about J area is still classified. I wonder if the other poster from the 516th had the same debriefing as I did. Now that, was “interesting”.
A few other comments from 516th members disappeared a few days after they submitted and they were just normal comments.
not allowed to share or comment more--- forwarded to friend suggesting FOIA-- suddenly communications being blocked-fascinating! thank you!!
Thank you!!! putting pieces together,,,, thanks to you
I wish I had done it earlier before they torn down the theater and barracks and removed the newer restricted area signs.
very beautiful scenery..
What a view!
My favorite place to see sun come up and go down! An I kayak off causeway to islands across the way to Caladesi 💕
I spent several years in Savannah developing any training facility for special operations units but was shut down and Stonewall by the local redevelopment authority which had about as much business be developing an army facility as I do flying a spacecraft to Mars. I've got many many photos never seen before if you're ever interested
Yes just send an email to chuckconners1@gmail.com and how much you want for the photos.
can you post the pictures?@@thespecialistt215
I never received any pictures.
Great video. It's a shame that facility couldn't be used for more and the only reason for that is because of the local redevelopment authority and the persons that were assigned to that authority. They had no idea how and or didn't care about the town and its future. I spent several years there trying to revitalize the facility and make it into something that could help our nation and local areas but was stonewalled by local appointees who had no business administrating The rebirth of that facility or a porta-potty for that matter.
Yes with the low real estate prices for the buildings and land and it being a Foreign Trade Zone(Tax free) you would think that there would be more businesses there. Especially since it has access to barge, railroad, air and road traffic.
Thespecialistt. good morning, you shared beautiful video. 👋
Thanks for visiting
I was with the 516th Military Police at Savanna Army Depot '73-75 working within the "J" area. It was a very "different" kind of place to work.
Can you elaborate? Was it a nuclear storage site?
I grew up about 30 minutes to an hour from that place if it's one place to visit to see military history this is one place to go visit yes you can't get to certain areas cause it's fenced off but you can still see what the remnants are of what it used to look like. Still to this day they hire people to hand walk certain grids so they can locate unexploded ordinances that they have kept in the ground. The Mississippi you can not drive a boat into the area surrounding the depot because of the water mines they have.
Holly shit!!! I grew up there, schools never mentioned,... putting pieces together... my father... how did he end up in fulton, he was White sands Proving grounds... so much starting to make sense.. thank you so much for exposing this.. why such an incredible nature area, bluffs, etc.. but super poverty low real estate values.....bless you for exposing
Looks like some prime fishing there! Thanks for the vid
