Ableton Push 3: how to set up a pedal to trigger looper-style recording (Boss FS-7)
This video shows how easy it is to set up a pedal for triggering record and/or sustain functions on the Ableton Push.
The dual Footswitch capability and compact size of the Boss FS-7 makes it the perfect tool for this job.
I did however discover one issue (user-error or possibly a bug?) regarding the secondary pedal function described in the official Push manual - please comment below if you have any tips for this.

    Ironically my 24 plug power strip is on top of my desk right in the center of everything next to my mixer, and its up on a DJ stand so I can plug and unplug things easily because i am always swapping stuff out so the huge pile of wires is the main focus of my desk (because no computer/ no DAW).

    Do you still use the Korg SoundLink as well? I am considering using Big Six to mix and record the sub-group outputs from the Korg. It might be a bit overkill and I might end up with similar Presonus AR12 mixer instead of SSL. Have you tried something similar?

    • @synthshed
      @synthshed 24 дні тому

      I basically swapped out my Korg for the B6. I miss it in some regards, it’s a great mixer. What you’re planning would be a nice workflow if you have the space - I was basically doing the same but recording the groups out through my interface (Apollo). It’s a very nice pairing. And more compact with a rack mount interface than using a secondary mixer. But give it a go any way you fancy - you’ll work out what worlds for you!

    • @synthshed
      @synthshed Місяць тому

      Pretty sure from what I remember in San-Gorg’s setup and a jam we recorded, the Tascam does indeed allow for multitrack recording to SD card. Not sure about its summing capabilities because I never used it that way, pretty sure if the USB audio works both ways it should be doable though (Personally I’m using the SSL Big Six now for summing/mixdown duties, and can highly recommend- though higher budget and this lacks the Tascam’s SD card of course). Worth checking manual on both those points though just to be sure!

      Hi! I’ve never tried it with windows. My guess is that using a firewire to thunderbolt adapter might work to connect. But for the full interface functionality I’d guess you need to install the legacy drivers … check the Mackie website if they have any that would be compatible with your OS. Can’t guarantee I’m afraid as I’ve never tested it on PC. If you try it please report back your findings here for other Windows users. (The reason it could still be used with Macs for so long is that they have never needed the driver software … which Mackie stopped updating a LONG time ago)

    • @synthshed
      @synthshed 3 місяці тому

      New Macs (or anything running on Ventura OS and later) will have Core Audio FireWire functionality disabled. There are some workaround hacks but not really recommended … and actually don’t always work. best bet is an older laptop (or permanently downgrade your OS, which is not a great idea for your main computer) - so short answer is no, as far as I’m aware. Nice one! Could you elaborate how do you level match? Do you keep the Gain of the desk at 0?

    • @synthshed
      @synthshed 3 місяці тому

      hi - thanks for watching. short answer is yes, I keep everything at zero/unity on the mixer as it comes in over USB. Because in my workflow (others will vary of course!) I usually do my gain-staging in DAW working off my reference tracks. So I've got a pretty good balance already going in to the SSL, and I'm deliberately trying to avoid tweaking levels of the individual channels too much on the desk. Hope that answers your question.

    • @synthshed
      @synthshed 3 місяці тому

      PS. I'm pretty sure the USB audio input comes in after the pre-amp, so it bypasses the actual gain/trim pots on the channel strips, but need to double check that. of course you can still alter recording (as in loop back to USB) levels on the faders!

But it's a nice machine for sure. Very easy to use. I myself have used a bunch of different mixers including most recently the SSL Big Six. Hello - its unbelievable this works with other brands gear !! - its now a thing !!! have you tried individual outputs from MPC to the MX-1 i mean....a single channel for the BD, other one for SD...etc ...????

      There are a lot of routing possibilities to try - this sounds totally possible, I actually don’t remember if I tried it out myself, and since I no longer have these pieces of gear in my studio I can’t test it out anytime soon- but please give it a try and report back here for other users who might well have similar questions! Thanks for watching

      Worth it if you can. Or keep a janky old laptop around, with old OS on it, just for Onyx duties.

    If you’re not using the Maschine in standalone, can you use the computer to name stuff?

      You mean in controller mode? Yes as far as projects/groups go you will do all that ‘admin’ on the computer, it’s a lot easier lol

    Awsome thanks! How does the mic pre on this sound? Better than a Mackie or tascam?

    • @synthshed
      @synthshed 9 місяців тому

      I don’t use the mic pres much - so can’t give a useful opinion - mostly I’ve been running line level (synths samplers fx etc). What I can say is that the Korg gives masses of clean headroom compared to my vintage Mackie Onyx (to be expected I suppose) and sounds really good overall. I also like the onboard utilities like (digital) limiter and EQ.

    So can you record multiple tracks simultaneously?

    • @synthshed
      @synthshed 9 місяців тому

      Been a while since I was experimenting with this setup, but yes if I recall you just need to record arm multiple tracks in MPC Live 2 (think you hold shift + record, but please check manual!) then providing you have the incoming channels assigned correctly from the MX-1 as shown on the video, you should be golden. NB I don’t know how robust multitrack recording is over USB - i.e. when the MPC might start stressing out over processing too much incoming audio, but have a play and you’ll soon find out what it can cope with!

    Seems super easy to transfer all that audio with just one usb to each individual channel on a Mx-1 need to get one of these great demo and Explanation.

      yes, it's a nice workflow especially if you already have any aira/boutique gear that works nicely with the MX-1 - glad you found it useful, thanks!

    I wondered if it works well on Windows 10, able to track fader level?

      I use the smaller model - 820i - and it works just fine with Windows 7 drivers.

      Thanks. Now I find a big downside for me is that it'd only track pre-fader level on firewire. The fader does nothing inside the DAW, a big downside since I need something to control the level real time, if I get a fader control surface it just defeats the purpose and it is better to get a preamp instead. The only good thing is the eq.

    Great Upload. I don't use a Mac I use win 7 with My Onyx 820i that goes to a PCIE FireWire card and this works well in Reaper . I can select any input from the 820i channels 1 to 8 and my delta card 1 and 2 inputs very flexible and great sounding desks, plus you can daisy-chain 2 onyx desks together. My Roland tr 09 gives 4 usb separate outs which is not as good as the RD 9 but handy in many other ways.

      Thanks for the kind words and also sharing your experience- actually with newer Macs ditching firewire core audio support it looks like Windows is now the way to go for this kind of use!
