there's a version on Steam called AoE HD (retired).

I used to play it regularly but that was 10-15 years ago. I loved this particular version of AoE. I have all the versions but hardly ever played them.

You can't. The closest thing you can get is called AoE HD (Retired). You may look it up on Steam.

And watching and controlling people from above makes you feel all-powerful. Before AoE I had no idea what isometric games were like. And what about the countless variations you can do with random maps.

Obsidian arrows weren't available until AoE HE. Also, trebs are better and faster at demolishing castles.

It was a gem. After all those new versions, enhanced graphics, improved AI, I am still drawn to the original.

This version is not available anywhere right now. I had the CD ripped and made several copies. All but one survived. What you're watching is the original-original low-resolution game recorded into enhanced HD video.

I have all the versions of AoE, even the latest IV, and yet, this one I like the most. There was a certain appeal in the graphics and simple controls.

@sabrelore it's a mesmerizing game for sure, the graphics, the controls, the strategy, the sound effects, it was sheer immersion and fun, legendary franchise

You know, the first time I watched someone playing AoE II, I knew I was gonna play this my entire life. Here I am 15 years after that incident. 😀

Remember the CD version? Had that copied on multiple CD/DVDs. Only one copy survived. But, if you still have that PS2 version, you can try an emulator. Also, there's this version called AoE2Retired on Steam. It's dirt cheap.

That's confusing. I can see the title 'Age of Empires II (Retired). Costs about 7 USD.

There are 3 dlcs with this game Forgotten, African Kingdom and Rajas.

I have a list of vintage games I wanna play this winter. Diablo 1 is also there.

I'm quickly running outta stamina though. Last time I played I remember having some magic item for stamina gain. Guess, I'll have to level up first.

It's a personal preference. I love the old graphics more. Though I have the DE version, I use it only for multiplayer.

I have the definitive edition. I hardly ever play that except for multiplayer matches.

You can't. It's not available online. But you can look at your local library for vintage games or, if you can get a PS2 disc, try running it with an emulator.

You keep sailing, preferably along the coast of Greek occupied territories, and when you spot ships you let your eagle scan them.
