The Air We Breathe (Glen Scrivener)
Переглядів 12521 день тому
Today in the west, many consider the church to be dead or dying. Christianity is seen as outdated, bigoted and responsible for many of society's problems. This leaves many believers embarrassed about their faith and many outsiders wary of Christians and their movement. But what if the Christian message is not the enemy of our modern Western values, but the very thing that makes sense of them? M...

What it will take to bring them back? Don't waste your time. Oh, you'll shame and guilt and frighten a few back because religious trauma runs very VERY deep. So a few will not be able to get through it. But most of us will not be back. Once you've seen what we've seen, there's no going back unless you're Cypher gazing at his steak willing to sell his soul for the Matrix. Christians need to reorder their reality TO REALITY. Your churches will get smaller and smaller. It'll become even harder to pay those building mortgages and bonds, and to give your pastor enough money that he doesn't have to overnight stocking at Home Depot to provide for HIS family. You'll cut your secretary's hours down until someone will simply volunteer to do that job instead. 6,000 to 10,000 churches are shutting every year, not from failing, not by "doing it wrong", not by "not hearing god." But from the gradual graying and emptying of the pews. You'll do more funerals than baby dedications. Practice your Christianity and be as good at it as you can be. But don't depend on folks "seeing the light" or coming back.

I hate to be the first to comment on this vid. But here goes. Are you able to use the outsider test to justify a Christian world view. There are Many definitions of Chrisitanity, many micro world views of Christianity. Are you a flat earther also? Why do you use these terms of deconstruct and resconstruct. How does faith give you anything that is grounded in reality? Saying you are a Christian really tells me nothing, nada. The term is ambiguous. Truth is also a term you use which people debate about under many contexts. I would suggest putting your thoughts in bounds of contexts. Which contexts are going to reflect what is based in reality. Sex is based in a real world, gender itself is a construct that people are highly ambiguous about generally. You should go back to the basics, start defining terms with clarity, not ambiguity.

That's a helpful comment and reminder to define terms as much as possible to clarify one's position and steer away from ambiguity. Thank you. That could have been done more at key moments of this episode for sure! At an hour long as it was we're always in that tough spot of clarifying more & pressing on. While I acknowledge that there are many definitions of Christianity, there have been some consistent, widely help core tenets of the Christian faith throughout the ages. Creeds such as The Apostles Creed and The Nicene Creed (among others) explain what those views are that make Christianity Christianity. Likewise, there has been a consistent sexual ethic throughout the ages (macro). As it pertains to gender, like Dr. Favale says in the episodes, it's a new concept (being detached from sex/biology). A couple quotes from Favale's book may be clarifying here as to the argument she is making: "It is not possible to embrace oneself by rejecting one's body." "In the parade of animals, the man's act of naming does not impose meaning but recognizes meaning that objectively exists. God creates the animal and presents it to the man, who discerns its distinct nature and bestows a name that proclaims that nature... Reality, then, exists prior to our naming it, and our language is true and meaningful when it corresponds to what exists."
