An Educational day with the Coast Guard and Muskegon Brewing Co.
Invasive species are a major issue for the Great Lakes. Many organizations like the Department of Natural Resources, Michigan State University and the Coast Guard all try to educate the public about this issue. I got a chance to help out at one of these educational events on my trip to Michigan. Join me as I watch these organizations in action and then visit Muskegon Brewing Company!

In this episode I return to the Kansas City area to help Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. This time I’m not on a fish survey, this time we are surveying the area for crayfish diversity. With crayfish being a vulnerable group of freshwater invertebrates and a few becoming invasive species in different areas the state is definitely in need of data. We are testing 3 urban lakes and ponds t...

Trapping and Identifying House Sparrows
Переглядів 3,8 тис.6 місяців тому
European House sparrows are an invasive species here in North America that have a negative impact on our native bird species. Species like our beloved Bluebirds and Purple Martins. Sparrows outcompete and even kill our native birds for their nesting spots since they are cavity nesting birds. In this video I compare results of two different traps, a live rat trap and a Van Ert trap. I also go th...

Two of my favorite things are the natural world and craft beer. Invasive ecology education is my passion and invasive species have a major impact on the craft beer world and most people don’t know about it. Start Comercial level fishing for them. Be good cat chow or garden fertilizer
They do, there is a company called Chippin that makes pet treats with them. I have a discount code if you are interested!
how can i get, i need
Cast net is the best way because they really don’t go for lures.
What do u use to catch thim
The commercial fishermen use gillnets, I've used a cast net to catch some just for catfish bait and if you want to catch them on rod and reel I've seen people use small grub jigs but they typically don't hit on anything.
I have 2 that are on my front porch. One is particularly large. I honestly thought it was a banana spider for a while, but it's definitely a joro from what I can tell
Also, I'm close to Greenville SC
Banana spider webs will have a think line down the middle of it, and in a zig zag pattern. I should have mentioned that. I have yet to see any here in Kansas but who knows when.
In California, we have the very similar big Orb Weaver spiders, Pretty similar I think. I always thought they were kind of cool. I saw a big June bug fly into one once -unfortunate for him, LOL. People automatically kill them when they see them, and that's just wrong. Thanks for this...subbed...
Thank you! Spiders and snakes usually pay the price for just being. I’m in Kansas and our Orb weavers get big but I’d like to travel south and study these in person.
I've fed many. You get really good at catching flies when you wanna fatten up a giant ord weever.
Great work you're doing!
Thank you! Two of my passions are invasive ecology and brewing so this is my way of combining the two!
almost any government's army could easily wipe out the largest dinosaurs, they would be too big not to be found and slaughtered. Even the activists who are in favor of the life of these animals could not do anything, it would be a risk to people's lives and urban infrastructure, there would be no talking, it would only be killed. Although they reproduced quickly, I highly doubt that the large and more dangerous dinosaurs lasted that long, on the other hand, some smaller ones could become exotic pests, causing more damage to ecosystems than to humans themselves.
You're using a lot of old estimates... You're gonna need to update some of those sizes. Also, if you go off of the theory of evolution, yes, some things aren't answered. If you go off of the creationist narrative, those creatures wouldn't be invasive, and the dinosaurs could stay steadily populated and would probably be protected however people could. You gotta remember from the other perspective everything we have in our world that's alive wasn't hunted to extinction or was deemed safe enough for us to not bother.
Did the indians have any much of an effect from keeping the white people from flourishing the country. Stop trapping these little birds, let them fly or you won't!
Jaba the Wit 😂
I know that got me thinking about some new beer names 🤣
Hallo vom Germany Goby = Grundel
Im watching in the UK, a safe place with only one venomous snake, a pitiful Adder, im constantly looking for them while im out with my dogs. I could never go to the States or Australia or anywhere where snakes are i HATE them all. While you're down there, are you ever conscious of Spiders? Oh god, i hate them, too. . My toes are curling up under my blanket ewww
You can't even see properly, and there's a woman down there with you, my lord. She's brave
Oh my lord, i am clostraphobic and terrified of snakes. This is one of my worst nightmares. Thank god we have people like you guys. I'd run away
I've studied this for twenty years. There is no such thing as an invasive species. ❤ The idea of the "balance" of nature is a little antiquated though, and easy to disprove... also *we* are nature.... so any act of introduction is also an act of nature.... the so-called "native" species whi cant adapt to new-comers were on their way out one way or another, and the new-comers are just ensuring the optimal health of the greater ecosystem by ushering in the local extinction of the plants and animals and others who are no longer well-suited to that ecosystem. ❤ None of the species "get out of control".... it's called an "outbreak" and given enough time, it will integrate. Most of them aren't just not harmless... they're incredibly beneficial! They don't cause ecological problems! Humans do!! But again- everything we do is natural... so we are like a natrual disaster and the "invasives" are like the clean up crew, the wound healing crew and the regenerating crew..... we have had it ALL wrong.
Humans are the only invasive species
Lol, it was like watching elmer fudd hunting.
Why wouldn’t you put a bag around the box so they don’t escape
I do now lol lesson learned
2:17 I used this stock video in my video too lol
Hi my name is Aaron Durr Burger I catch them with my hat❤
13:25 idk man, I think things like raptors, dilos, and stiggys would stand a chance, sure they are *kinda* large but small enough to where they could stay hidden if they chose to live in forested areas and sustained themselves on things like deer and fish (for the carnis anyway)
You need a mesh laundry bag, walmart, and stick the trap inside, close draw string. Then open the door. The laundry bag works over birdhouses with the Van Ert trap also. Birdhouse should be on a pole though.
Typical "Dinosaur Gets Loose Movies" (which are most dinosaur movies) all start with the dinosaur going on a rampage and ending with it getting killed, which is what typically happens when a predator gets loose in an urban environment.
13:26 dang not even pyroraptor? they are pretty small and would basically be like the average coyote or wolf. And if they do exhibit pack behavior like other raptors in the movies, I'm pretty sure they would be pretty stable in subarctic/cold environments.
I thought of them after I had everything edited maybe I should do a part 2 lol
I believe they could possibly survive but with conditions today probably would not get as big or live as long.
Why are letting the invasive species back into the river?
They were euthanized humanly before they were put back in the river.
You get them out by filling the space with a towel or rag. 2:50
I started putting the pillow case I use for relocating snakes around it and they will fly into that.
@@invasivebrews I like that idea too, I think I will do that.
21:23 incorrect... that chart marking is nowhere NEAR 30% at most it's just around 25%
12:14 well that's simply because not wasn't JUST them. it was dinosaurs being bred on the black market AROUND THE WORLD!
9:17 that of course sounds rather boring. no offence... just making a statement.
I forgot to mention your trap box should be on a pole
ingen compys are comfi9rmed to be venomous
Very interesting! Great video 👍🏻
Thank you!
Hear me out: - Feeder with a camera - Metal perch connected to high voltage - Remote switch - Large garbage can with one way door lid underneath Watch camera, flip switch when house sparrows are on it, take out the trash. Eradicate dozens or hundreds in a day. Would the DNR arrest me lol
Sounds awesome! I already have the feeder with a camera. I just need to be more educated on what exactly does a house sparrow look like. How close is it to our native species.
I was thinking of patenting something similar, but the camera would use AI(and trained VERY thoroughly) to detect and zap House Sparrows and Starlings.
this video is very helpful for kids/ new pet owners that don’t know about red ear sliders thank you for this information.
What if they're not pets , but keep getting into my goldfish pond ? I just released a male slider that was unfortunately in there for three years . A female slider found it's way into the pond four days later , but was able to climb out . we caught her in the front yard , and I was able to take her down to the lake to release her . Did I do a bad thing for the eco-system at the Lake ?
It depends on where you are at. If you are in their native range in the south and central states you are fine.
No luck with the Van Ert traps just yet. I just keep catching Wrens. My success has been high powered air rifle ( Gamo 177 ) and a cage trap I made. I submerge the trap in a barrel of water. Takes about 15 seconds. I hate the fact I have to clean up someone else's mess....😡
There are millions , each adult female carries a million eggs , think you can fix this , THINK AGAIN 😮
FILL up fellas , we got Lotta moe 😮
Why the gloves for a sparrow 😂😂😂 if you were dispatching them anyway shake the trap hard enough they are dead.
That is until they break on through to the other side.
Thanks to the commercial fisherman, i haven't seen a live silver or bighead carp for at least a couple of years down there.
A repeater trap is the best.
2020, they were EVERWHERE in the Big Sandy area of Kentucky Lake. Fast forward to 2024... I haven't seen a single one this year. Well done, gentlemen!
Have you noticed a comeback of game and native fish in that location? I'd like to get back out there and do another video!
...i am very claustrophobic, afraid of the dark & absolutely terrified of snakes!!...you are real heroes!!...
Nice ideias
I have watched house sparrows kill eastern bluebirds and take over the nest box. They use the little stick perch to stand on and kill the birds in the nest box. I learned that the only bird that needs the perch are the house sparrows. I removed the perches on my bird houses.
The only bird house I have a perch on is the one I put the Van Ert trap on because of that fact!
yes, I've got a family of eastern bluebirds right now and I watched a male house sparrow struggle to enter the box, mine doesnt have a perch either. I believe he was just checking the place out, but he got chased off by the bluebirds quick lol.
I love seeing volunteers around the counter help remove invasive plants
It was a lot of fun, but a lot of work.
I'm all for evicting invasive bird nests and eggs from bird houses but leave the live birds and babies alone. It's not their fault they are here. So, put up bird houses and remove house sparrow or starling nests and eggs when you see them nesting there. If enough bird houses are kept free of these invasive birds, native birds will have places to nest. In Connecticut this is done, and native birds (mainly the bluebird) have returned and are increasing in their numbers. It's no use killing the invasive birds as they will always be here now.
Kentucky love from Eddyville Kentucky ❤🤘🇺🇲💪
SO many people talk about trapping them, but no one talks about HOW to dispatch them.
