Preserving the History of Midway Island
Переглядів 2112 роки тому
The Battle of Midway was one of the most battles in history. Today, Midway is a National Wildlife Refuge AND a Battle of Midway National Memorial - yet it is completely closed to visitors. Midway’s history deserves to be preserved and witnessed by the American public. The USFWS is required to maintain the historic significance of the island, yet they keep the island closed to all visitors.

A pictorial journey of historic Midway Island, showing the path the island has taken since the Navy left in 1996. You'll see examples of how the island once paid its own way via a Visitor Program. You'll see how this amazing place has changed since the closure of the Visitor Program. We offer photo examples of present day stewardship by The U.S. Fish And Wildlife Service, allowing photos to spe...
Reflections of Midway

A slide show of Midway Island, showing several photos of my 12 years on the island. Several friends also permitted me to include their photos too. Once you've been to Midway, you can hardly get it out of your head.
Thank You for your documentation of the Island. Sad as it is, it still holds many fond memories to many of us that had the privilege to have visited or lived on this island, no mater ho short a time. Even though the buildings are crumbling or gone, it’s the massive open sky, deep blue surrounding sea, white sand beaches, goony birds and terns that hold our memories there still. USN USS Reclaimer ARS 42 visits in between Vietnam tours, 1970, 1971 or 1972. I’m old, so dates do slip some. Was nice to read other memories posted here.
It's criminal what they did to the island. Apparently USFWS hired and placed grossly unqualified delinquents on the island which have wrecked all the equipment and vehicles on the island, besides completely destroying many historical artifacts and buildings that cannot be replaced.. it's obvious why they stopped the public to visit the island, because they didn't want the public to see that everything on the island had been maliciously destroyed buy a bunch of irresponsible nitwits the government put in charge of the island..
Anyone watching what's going on in the Solomon Islands should see how the chinese communists are now taking over guadalcanal. If one only uses their brain, they will see that midway will become another military target for our enemies in the future and American young soldiers/sailors/marines, will have to risk/lose their lives defending something they could've been easily defended and managed correctly. Whether Midway or Guadalcanal, our "leaders' learned nothing from history and apparently hold it in such distane that they are not willing to preserve it or an Island such as midway. Written on the anniversary of the battle no one remembers.
I had a wonderful time there. I have been there twice. The 2nd time was when we celebrated year 2000 twice. Once flying over the international date line to be the 1st to celebrate and then the next night back on the island, we celebrated it again! What a shame
for everyone who has been there,,,, you are very lucky ,, cool
My Favourite Water Tower

Mike - hope you are well. I knew things were bad but didn't know how bad. What the FWS did on Midway Island is a true travesty. Unfortunately this seems to be the case all too often when FWS is put in charge of a location.
After 2 tours to Vietnam, 1965, 66, and 67, I was sent to Midway Island just before Christmas of 1967, I was there until my enlistment was up in July 1968. I was a heavy equipment operator with the Seabees. I always had hopes of visiting Midway again.
Since this is taxpayer owned and no longer serves as anything military,.,could it not be bought? It would make a terrific vacation, tourist destination.Since its clear this has become a burden to taxpayers I think it should be offered for sale, only to a vetted American person or people,,not some company that is foreign owned. It cannot be any worse than it is now. I would entertain others in this idea. Please contact me if you too see the benefits of this vs what is happening now.
@15:20 "The largest fuel spill in the state of Hawaii" did NOT happen at Midway because Midway is NOT in or part of the State of Hawaii. Midway is a territory owned by the Federal Government of the United States, but it is NOT owned, occupied, or presided over by any state government.
While in the USAF, we had to stop at Midway for refueling. We had maybe 2 hours total and I recall getting a ride from a golf cart and I just was amazed at the beach and just stayed there looking out into the Pacific for as long as I could stay. I always wanted to go back and try the fishing and now that I am older, appreciate the historical events that happened there with more reverence than when a younger man. I will still hope.
I was an ET stationed on Eastern Island in 1966. I consider myself very fortunate to have experienced such an incredible place so rich in biodiversity and history. I wish I could go back to with my wife to share this amazing place. 10:59
nice job mike,, i love it,,, want to visit it someday,,, wow
"just throwing more money at this issue will not solve it" Well the 18 million required to fix the seaplane hanger back in 2010 wasn't going to come from no where and it didn't so i don't totally understand the congressman here
These people are horrible. Using the island as a science project ! They need to step off... Fish and wildlife THAT IS! They ruined things!
Sadly seeing infrastructure being destroyed without thinking of possible future usage.
What a crying shame. I visited in 1996 and how surreal it was. What more can one say when bureaucracy can never be held to account.
When something like this is maintained at know expense too the American government is dumb for stopping this. When maintained the islands would be ready for any military action needs. Like China is going to be a cautious event to the future.
Great video. Thanks!
I'm 83 years old and still waiting for a successful Government program! I was stationed on Midway in the early 60's and am sickened with what I see.
USFWS has had so many chances to turn this island into a historic site and turned it down to make it a wildlife sanctuary.. it is a historic site and should have been taken care of better.
Criminal what FWS has done to this island! Typical arrogant agency out of control and abusing the power they have been given!
This would be foolish if we don't reactivate midway islands. Having barracks, runways, and other infrastructure needs that are already there. Something with Johnson island for logistics.
On Midway, the only barracks left standing today is BOQ-Charlie. I was told the third floor of BOQ-Charlie is off-limits, due to falling cement and water leaking from the electrical fixtures. By not having anywhere for visitors to stay, the USFWS have the ultimate excuse for not reopening their promised Visitor Program. Also, since this video was made, several other buildings have been demolished, including the Main Galley.
“We’re from the government and we’re here to help”
Some humans are the worst
The government agency called the u.s. forest service it is not a Constitutional agency a private company helped that island to restore but the destructive u.s.forest miserable joke destroyed many pre war structures!
Just what we need, another Johnston Atoll. What a criminal waste of a beautiful Island.
Precisely !!!
Why are we surprised people? The deeply-imbedded insect bureaucracy of FWS and other like government agencies are shot through with true believing eco leftists who believe that man is an alien species and that any trace of humanity must be smote from the face of the earth. While they haven’t quite called for our overt mass extinction yet, they’re perfectly comfortable having us live retrograde existences such as Cro-Magnon man living in caves. Ever notice that their energy solutions always redound to mechanisms which were used in the Middle Ages and before? Windmills? Manure? Somehow they conveniently not only carve out Homo sapiens from the earths natural biosphere, but also, crude oil, which flows freely out of the ground worldwide every second of every day and to harness its benefits is somehow at odds with the best interests of earth itself? The reason people don’t think of crude oil as earths Mothers Milk is because 75% of our surface is covered with water. Earth itself has “spilled” more oil in a half decade than man has ever spilled since our original attempts to harvest it as energy. These ironies and inconsistencies have never and will never be explained away or reconciled by these eco communists. And, on another topic, as a Marine, I’ll never make peace with these traitors who have wiped away the sanctity of Midway as a military grave and national historic site. And what’s with wrong with responsible tourism? The Pan Am Clipper was being used at the atoll for a decade before the war while navy and marine garrisons protected the island. They even had a luxury hotel there. As you can see from today, the Gooney Birds are doing just fine. So fine that they’ve now overrun the island. These people need to be tried for destruction of government property.
The public is not allowed to go to French Frigate Shoals either.
Ronnie Reagans famous words the nine most terrifying words in the English language Im from the Government im here to help you how true more so today than ever this is a prime example
As a Sea Bee I spent about 11 months on the island in was 1966. There was wreckage on thd beaches and there was a rusted ship about 300 yards I rhink it was from World War 2. It was beautiful island barracks, housing for officers and their families, hospital and other needs administrative services! Got tired of the goonie birds of course being young and hardly any women! Then watching this video we have government wasters and that so cslled joke fish and wildlife fiasco! Yea, they sure care! Over paid franklin roosevelt anti-constitutional joke agency! Wasting taxpayer dollars.
Must be special trips there for those who cab afford it!
I spent almost a year on that island in the military it had alot of barracks and officier housing plus there was alot of wreckage on the beaches, this was in the middle 1960's!
I flew into there years ago to deliver a replacement engine for a stranded aircraft. Just for fun I took a light spinning rod & reel. The near panic of the greenie weenies was a hoot. "You can't bring that here" etc etc... Ridiculous. I say close the runway, stop the supply ship, and let them eat coconuts.
Typical U.S. government F-Up......Criminals
Epic, thanks Mike
Seems intentional the destruction of American History Renegade Barrack Hussein Obama wad the Manchurian candidate placed to destroy America
USA waits billions a yes on worthless projects
Just so you know, there is no such place as Midway Island.
We're from the government and we're here to help.
Never underestimate our government's ability to waste our money.
I was stationed on the USS Reclaimer ARS 42, 1970-1972, when we had the pleasure of docking on Midway, several times during our westpac to Vietnam. During the last stopover there, I had easily, convinced a small group of shipmates to attempt to walk the islands coastline, on one beautiful day. We almost made it, except for when we ran across the far end of the runway that ended at the sea. We were spotted by an incoming cargo plane, as it landed, just passing above us, as we made a run for it. Shortly after, we were picked up by an open top Jeep patrol and quickly dispatched back to our ship. Still a magical day of exploration, I’ll never forget, I hope all who made the Trek, will remember it as fondly. Thank You for an excellent video 🙏Beautifully done👍 it helped me, after all these years, to complete my walk around the Island 🙂
i lived here 1979-80 july 4-july 4. navairsta. seabee. plumbing. ac,r water ,boilers Maintenace.. my first sea duty.. i wanted to stay, but was told no.. booo! id still be there..

It's amazing that the fish and wildlife service is so incompetent.
Had a stop at midway 1955 returning to the states. What remembered most was the overabundance of goonie birds and a B36 parked at the end of the island
What a crime spent a year there in 1970 to 71 loved it Beautiful place so sad and wrong
Our family was one of the last navy families to live on Midway. We had a wonderful life there. It is so sad to see such a historical site ruined and desolate courtesy of the fish and wildlife group It could have been a slice of paradise as a tourist resort and the historic items would have been preserved. Another government failure
My husband was the last commanding officer of Midway
