How to Lead with Focus and Solve Complex Problems with Chris Howard
Chris Howard is one of the most accomplished leaders I’ve ever met and I love the lessons he shared.
First, if we want to achieve anything in life, we need to focus on the task at hand. Fisher DeBerry taught Chris that when he crossed that blue line it didn’t matter what had happened up on the hill that day. It was time to focus. It’s not just about taking a 1000 shots a day. It’s about the focus required to make a 1000 shots per day. Practice doesn’t make perfect, but perfect, focused practice makes perfect.
Second, as an officer in Afghanistan, Chris learned the importance of attention to detail while traveling from Bagram Airbase to Kabul. By carefully checking all of their gear, and doing it right every time, they were able to literally save lives.
Third, for Chris higher education is all about servant leadership, and solving complex problems that make society better. The organizational leadership program he was able to institute with the Pittsburgh port authority helped workers rise the ranks, and turn their credits, into credentials, into degrees.
In summary, by developing the ability to stay focused and pay attention to detail, whether in sports, the military, school, or any other arena, we can learn to solve problems that make society better.
“Upon the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that upon other fields on other days will bear the fruits of victory.”
It’s a simple idea. Please take it seriously.
Bio:
Dr. Chris B. Howard is the COO of Arizona State University. He’s a distinguished graduate of the United States Air Force Academy where he played football and earned the Campbell Trophy, the highest academic award for a senior in college football. In the military he was awarded a Bronze Star as a helicopter pilot and intelligence officer in Afghanistan.
Chris earned a doctorate from the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar and an MBA with distinction from Harvard. He then served as vice president at the University of Oklahoma, President of Hampden-Sydney College, and President of Robert Morris University. During this time he also served as a member of the College Football Playoff Selection Committee.
I hope you enjoyed learning from Dr. Chris Howard, because I certainly did.

The Power of Thinking About Your Legacy with Kimberly Wade-Benzoni
Переглядів 3Місяць тому
Kimberly Wade-Benzoni is a global expert on legacy, and she shares a perfect lesson for this podcast. We tend to care a lot more about our present selves than our future selves. And this focus on the “now” can hurt us and others, both in the present and future. But by thinking about our own legacy, we can shift our focus to the long term, counteract some of our selfish, present-focused desires,...
Creating Value, Collaboration, and Overcoming Imperfection with Max Bazerman
Переглядів 7Місяць тому
Max Bazerman has been creating value for decades, and I love the lessons he shared. First, Max built his career on collaborating with great people, who have complementary skills, sometimes better than his own, and by not worrying about who got the credit. These people have become core to not only his career, but also his life. Second, create a life around creating value. By drawing on the utili...

And it was also during this productive period that he developed, with Jonathan Haidt, Moral Foundations Theory, one of the most well-kn...
Everything is Hard at First: Adam Galinsky on Overcoming the "Firsts" in Life and Finding Your Style

Adam Galinsky is one of the all-time most accomplished professors in his field, and I look forward to trying to apply the lessons he taught. First, everything is difficult the first time we do it. So when we try something new and we struggle with it, we should remember that it was hard for everyone else the first time they tried it as well. And we just need more reps to improve. It took Kobe Br...
Why You Should Talk to Strangers: Lessons from Juliana Schroeder
Переглядів 112 місяці тому
Juliana Schroeder is a global expert on how technology use is shaping our perceptions of others, and I look forward to trying to apply the lessons she taught. First, most of us tend to be under-social. We underestimate how much we can benefit others and ourselves by being more social on the margins. When we’re concerned about being social for fear of looking foolish or that people won’t recipro...
Innovation Lessons from the Man Behind the Apple Store: Ron Johnson
Переглядів 32 місяці тому
I loved hearing the simple lessons that Ron learned from his incredible business career. First, use your imagination to do something that’s never been done before. I loved Ron’s approach of spending 90% of this time doing what he was supposed to do, and doing it exceptionally well, but then spending 10% of his time imaging something that had never been done. Second, according to Steve Jobs, any...

Whitney Lundeen has been through the grinder, so-to-speak, but she keeps rising to the top with such a great outlook and perspective that she so successfully conveyed today. Would be cool if someday he comes back to Boise and does a tour as Broncos Head Coach. He and his mates put BSU on the map as a national brand.
