'Pig Years' and 'What the Chicken Knows' consider the interior worlds of farm animals
Today's books take readers into the secret lives of farm animals. The first, Pig Years, is a memoir by the writer Ellen Gaydos, who began working as a farmhand at 18 years old. In Pig Years, she writes lyrically about working with, raising and admiring pigs-all while knowing they'll one day be slaughtered. In today's episode, we revisit a conversation between Gaydos and NPR's Danielle Kurtzleben about the intimacy of working with people and animals on the farm. Next, author Sy Montgomery has written more than 34 books about creatures, including turtles and octopi. Her latest project is a book about chickens. What the Chicken Knows is an homage that relishes all we don't know about the birds. In today's episode, Montgomery speaks with Here & Now's Peter O'Dowd about chickens' surprising signs of intelligence and what to do when a rooster attacks.

People really, really underestimate how smart pigs are, they are more trainable than dogs.
I’ve been following your channel-great videos, but views are low. With better SEO, we can change that. Let's discuss how I can help.
Best series iv watched all year
I disliked All Fours so many people loved it and I found the protagonist grating.

Fishare you right.... Why dude got the Thriller post from Michael Jackson? I'm sueing 😂😂
I can't tell if the cover photo is supposed to be funny or serious
Miranda July's All Fours really is a GREAT book, highly recommend it
A thriller based around an over 70s protagonist is very fitting for the times
The witnesses who lied should go to jail and ross perot’s estate should be required to give Benjamine Spencer 100 million dollars and the government should not tax it as income as its payment of a debt
Just visited Ireland and Belfast. Very fascinating country. Just read this excellent book. Highly recommend

Bless this amazing man and his endless sacrifices for justice.
The cover of this book is just so vibrant and lively and lovely.
Hmm I wonder what it’d look like for men.
Bernie always been #1
Great for staring campfires.
This is Complete misinformation and propaganda and more research definitely should have been done instead of listening to lies being pushed by certain campaigns . That call you describe -never even happened.
I came in in the middle of an author interview yesterday, and I missed the book title, etc. I thought, I bet it will be on NPR Book of the Day, and sure enough-it’s Linguaphile! Thanks!

I love this book and am reading it again.
I was delighted to find a book for my Sixteen year old grandSON! It's so easy to find something for his twin sister but other than food I can't have find things for him. Thank you, thank you, Mr. Reynolds! BTW I purchased two books, one for him and one for me!
An absolutely captivating and thought-provoking read! As a longtime admirer of Miranda July’s work, both in literature and film, I find her unique voice consistently compelling. For those unfamiliar with her style, I recommend looking into her background, as her artistic approach is unconventional and may not resonate with absolutely everyone. July has a gift for illustrating scenes that are starkly vulnerable, often balancing on the edge of discomfort - her writing evokes a deep emotional resonance, blending poignancy with moments of raw, sometimes sexually unsettling, intimacy. This tension between fragility and boldness makes her storytelling all the more powerful to me.
So happy for her, great writer…
I actually think a protagonist who questions the morality of what it takes to stay alive at all is very intriguing.
😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤❤
I've pre-ordered mine. Can't wait!
This book is very thoughtful and well-written. Don’t let its detractors stop you from reading it. It’s not at all radical.
Being a librarian is already a job that doesn't get enough support and thanks, it tends to draw a personality type who is NOT especially extroverted or political, who is especially likely to get stressed by this type of treatment. On behalf of all librarians, I wish America would shush!
Giving the wrong directions to tourists is indeed one of the hidden pleasures of being a New Yorker!
I am a Muslim. And I understand the details of the Palestinian history and journey As an American Muslim, I know for a fact most American Muslims are told not to discuss the subject at work or social circles Because we are told if we do, we will be in trouble What he has written in this book I’ve known for 52 years Muslim knows this already We knew the Iraq war was based on a lies We knew there was no WMD We knew there was no connection between Iraq and Al Qaeda So we knew the 500,000 Iraqis That were killed they were killed with our tax dollars But we couldn’t open up and discuss this with fellow Americans And we knew someone came out in public like he has in this book he would be blacklisted He is a hero ! Malcolm X Martin Luther King, Frederick, Douglass, and so many others would be proud of him I want people to remember, South Africa I want people to do research and find out what happened with South Africa in the 1990s I want to do search on UA-cam and listen to what Nelson Mandela said about Palestine Then you will understand the connection Then you will understand why the government of South Africa has presented the case with international criminal court that Israel is guilty of genocide There is so much more he will learn about Palestine About the darkness About the crimes about the rapes About the torture prisons About children in jail And so much more
I got my book about two hours ago. I strongly encourage every American to read this book And I hope he writes more about the Palestinian cause If he does, I think he will be shocked I’m waiting for him to write about much more than walking down the street in Hebron I’m waiting for him to discover the dead bodies, laying in refrigerators in Israeli prisons Because the government refuses to send the bodies to the family for burial I’m waiting for him to write about the number of children 12 years old 15 year-old kids who are in jail with no charges against them indefinitely because their subject of military Justice I’m waiting for him to write about 1948 1967 1973 and what did these three years have in common with 2023 and 2024 ? It’s the same process that began in 1948 To steal the land and to make life in habitable so that Palestine would leave or the decision to exterminate them I pray and hope Americans do what they did with South Africa to Palestine There’s a reason why South Africa has introduced the case for genocide in Palestine international criminal court Because they know best He is encountering this epiphany because he realizes as a taxpayer Blood is now on his hands and hours because we are not told the truth of what is going on and why so many Palestinians are being killed every day Time is running out They may not be enough left pretty soon I’m going to read all of his books
I will be buying his book. I was appalled by that one man and the fact that the station did not diaclosed that the man wife and children are currently in Isreal. He has a personal stake in the matter. He converted to the religion to marry his wife and publicly wrote an article about his abult circumcision. Look it up. I also agree with Mr. Coastes. I would like to hear a Palestinian perspective on the matter. I however, am not brainwashedby the media and I am fully aware of the biases that are present..
Beautiful, just bought and started reading his book. Thank you for giving voice to the voiceless.
Of course the Israeli/Palestine concerns Americans! We supply the weapons and the moral support for the genocidal impulses of the Israel regime. At the same time, welcoming the Israeli prime minister to the US Congress who is under indictment for genocide by the International Criminal court weakens international law.
